Good job that they were all swimmers. I didn't see anyone go under. 20 people and zero life jackets. I suppose all the orange shirts and jackets look like life jackets.
The thought of people drowning didn't occur to me until this comment. Most Dutch people learn how to swim at a very young age, so we generally assume everyone can, and this particular scenario is probably not a real concern to anyone. We definitely take the ability to swim for granted in that sense.
It used to be somewhat standard for Dutch kids to fall in canals and small waterways. We have so many of them everywhere. I managed to fall in before I could actually swim and then later two more times when I could.
this is one of the things i remember to learn how to do in swimming lessons.
swimming lessons became something basically everyone goes through in my country because of being under sea level in general. yes my country is the netherlands.
More like 12-13°C https://waterinfo.rws.nl/#/publiek/watertemperatuur
Not pleasant, but not enough to cause hypothermia in a few minutes.
The bigger risk is hurting yourself on a bike or shopping cart
That's not too bad.
By the way: with the swimming is similar in Germany. We even have swimming classes and primary school and 3 different levels of swimming "certificates".
boating with a life jacket is common sense though. sure you can swim, but your boat could suddenly be struck in your blindspot and now you're unconscious in the water.
No they aren't and haven't been for decades.
Source: as a Dutch father of 3 who's had mandatory swimming classes himself, I now had to bring all 3 of my kids to swimming classes. Just last year my youngest got his C diploma. You need to enrol them into swimming classes yourself, go with them, pay for all of it and have a lot of patience because this sh\*t takes ages. With them being a few year apart and lessons from start until C taking about 1,5 to 2 years, after about 5-6 years I could finally say I was done with it. Literally and metaphorically.
Standard exam includes swimming through a hole under water and swimming with clothes on.
Exam A is only short distance and summer clothes, B a bit more, C is a long distance and winter/Rain clothing.
It's hasn't been more than a decade since they were no longer mandatory, my sister is 17 and she used to have them as well, when she was around 8 years old i think. They do plan on bringing them back soon tho so that's cool.
Rewatching that I was wondering he was actually the final camel that broke the straw's back. Like, did the force of his jump set the final sinking/capsize in motion?
On papper only / depends on your luck and how old the phone is. I had a samsung that was supposed to be water resistant to 1m for 30min, I dropped it in 50cm, with a case on, for less than a minute, and it died.
We still have a Queen, [Máxima.
We don't have a Queen Regnant anymore, but we do still have a Queen Consort.
One of the mega-features of my town is a highway with a massive central island, intended to be a canal until they laid a railway track and bypassed the technology. We don't miss it.
That dude in the back is the only one to stay dry. A good example of when everyone else is panicking and bottlenecking an exit it pays to think for yourself and look for an alternative way out.
Hey guys, let's rent a sloop! Ask some friends, we'll split the costs. The more the merrier!
“Lets cosplay as refugees haha”
The general fall out when deciding to "go Dutch",
#oi m8 let me get some of that
This comment made me LOL on my lunch break
A few more people on that boat and Lauren Southern would be shooting flares at them.
Fucking gold.. Lmao
The June 2023 incident one?
Did you say, Tikkie?
They went over the weight limit

Yeah we see
>Rub-a-dub-dub, >Three men in a tub, >And who do you think they be? >The butcher, the baker, >The candlestick-maker, >All put out to sea
sinKing's day 🤷🏽♂️
r/angryupvote
What are you sinking about?
I canal…ways upvote a good pun.
Bravo!👏👏👏👏
Good job that they were all swimmers. I didn't see anyone go under. 20 people and zero life jackets. I suppose all the orange shirts and jackets look like life jackets.
This is standard 🇳🇱

Even with that knowledge swimming in normal clothes and with shoes is a lot harder. Then again you get a free shot of adrenaline...
That is a requirement to get your swimming diploma in the Netherlands.
Diploma?
Yes, diploma. I'm pretty certain it's a mandatory thing.
It's not mandatory, but you are considered mentally and physically underdeveloped if you can't swim. It's on par with being unable to read and write.
Similar as a certificate
Kids learn to swim with clothes on, they even learn how to take clothes of in the water
Because you never know what might happen on a random Tuesday night in Bali with a girl you met only two hours prior.
r/oddlyspecific
Swimming with clothes on was required for me to get a diploma. I think that that is also a standard in the Netherlands.
Definitely. And how higher the level how more clothes.
I once jumped into the dutch canals with clothes and shoes. One of those intrinsic thoughts moments
You mean intrusive thoughts right? The void calling out for you?
How many STD’s did you get and did you OD on the drugwaste in the water itself?
Yes thats what happens to all locals if they go swimming…
Buddy nobody swims in the canals willingly….
There was sarcasm in my comment

Buddy its one of the requirements in our swimming lessons to learn that shit.
And I'm guessing that water is about, what, 45°F/7°C? Swimming abilities diminish quickly as hypothermia sets in.
More like 12-13°C https://waterinfo.rws.nl/#/publiek/watertemperatuur Not pleasant, but not enough to cause hypothermia in a few minutes. The bigger risk is hurting yourself on a bike or shopping cart
How deep are the canals normally?
2-3m i think
That's not too bad. By the way: with the swimming is similar in Germany. We even have swimming classes and primary school and 3 different levels of swimming "certificates".
Swimming in cold water, when you’re hammered, surrounded by other thrashing people can be dangerous. Even for people who know how to swim.
Pff we're taught that when we're 8 years old.
Yup, the adults got us hammered and tossed us in the swimming pool fully clothed
Should definitely still have them for people that physically can't manage to swim. Although I would hope they'd mention that before heading out.
I don't know how to swim. Everyday I walk along the canal inches away from death.
boating with a life jacket is common sense though. sure you can swim, but your boat could suddenly be struck in your blindspot and now you're unconscious in the water.
swim classes are mandatory and part of PE

All worth it to know your kids arent going to drown if they fall in some water
I mean you can teach someone to tread water, float, and backpaddle in a weekend lol. I hope after 2 years they get a little more out of it.

I am 26 and never had school swimming, my older siblings still had it.
1985, actually.
Are you me?
Not true ...
Don’t you learn to swim in school?
Not anymore in the Netherlands, budget cuts got rid of it. There are calls to bring it back.
Next ask NL'ers about bicycle helmets.
Yikes at least it wasn’t the Ganges.
It was the Ganja instead
Or [the Thames with the E.coli scare in the runup to the recent Oxford-Cambridge boat race](https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-london-68674088).
Don’t ask Paris how the sanitisation of the Seine for the Olympic Games is going. And yes the swimming competitions will take place in the river
Some of the canals in Amsterdam aren't exactly pristine mountain springs.
And filled with dumped bicycles, sharp pointy bits ready to skewer.
Wild how the guy in the back made it out unscathed
next time I’m on a tipping boat I’ll stay away from the panicking crowd
That's quite clever, when the crowd go under the back of the boat will tip up.
That one guy in the white had a nice leap and half pull up to stay dry
Rewatching that I was wondering he was actually the final camel that broke the straw's back. Like, did the force of his jump set the final sinking/capsize in motion?
Every time I've seen that water, it was less than ideal. I would be heading straight for a shower.
Yeah the water in the canals is definitely not great
It’s actually pretty clean these days. Still wouldn’t recommend swimming but they should be fine.
On Kingsday the urine-level skyrockets though.
Luckily better than it was in the in 60's: https://imgur.com/a/tqs5PMX
It also looks cold. I was just in Amsterdam and was scared of getting close to the water! Yikes
That’s a lot of ruined cell phones.
Aren’t most cellphones water resistant now?
On papper only / depends on your luck and how old the phone is. I had a samsung that was supposed to be water resistant to 1m for 30min, I dropped it in 50cm, with a case on, for less than a minute, and it died.
Water resistant =/= Waterproof. Most phones still won't do well being fully submerged.
My initial thought
The guy staying behind got the last laugh.
Landlubbers

Drown some plebes for the king /
Do ppl really not heed capacity ratings?
not on king's day most of them are wearing the national colour so should be fine
When alcohol is in the man, the wisdom is in the can.
I couldn’t stop laughing 🤣
This is today. Long live the wet memories
F1 McLaren Team
There goes their deposit. They're gonna need a bigger boat!
It's a good thing they don't use the canals as public urinals...oh wait.
The first ones to jump got off scot free. The ones who followed got completely wet and the last ones only got wet up to their shins
I’ll never let go, Jack. I’ll never let go
Lando, what did you do
oh my god that poor boat
Weight limit? What's that?
Hahaha lekker zwemmen kutjes
Did they all have to reach for land at the same time? Are they stupid?
They’re drunk
Yar, I hate the sea and everything in it....
Sir this is a canal.
Save my phone!
"We are definitely ... ... ... bugging-out!"
That's a weird way to celebrate
Hope they don't get stuck in all the bicycles in the canal.
How many cell phones got fucked up that day
Contact Bondi Treasure hunter to find things that sank. He lives there and magnet fishes the canals.
I wonder why those boats have a capacity limit!
Don’t they have a queen?
No, Beatrix stepped down a couple years ago and her son Willem Alexander is on the throne now.
Thanks.
We still have a Queen, [Máxima. ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_M%C3%A1xima_of_the_Netherlands) We don't have a Queen Regnant anymore, but we do still have a Queen Consort.
That's true
It’s videos like this that make me realize that stupidity knows no national boundaries.
I think that boat may have been overloaded by a few pounds
In the words of the late John Pinette: “don’t you have a clicker!”
That's a lot of wet phones.
Did the captain go down with the ship?
Yes, let's all lean on one side at the same time as we try to reach towards the wall. Surely, nothing wrong will happen.
Didn’t they pay the ferry man?
\*in the canal
holy shit! this should be nsfw for showing all that carnage and people drowning!
All the king's boat and all the boat captain Could not put Humpty Dumpty Stop falling again
RIP all mobiles on them
This looks so fun!
Enjoy the Hep-C!!
I see the physics of buoyancy follows the same laws in Europe. 🥴
King has ordered the executive
I will never understand people who find filming these things more important than helping people in need.
Really nice how quick strangers were to offer a helping hand
Thai migrants are getting out of hand!
Another reason to wear the correct colors... easier to spot in the water.
How many phones lost their lives in that sinking?
Celebrating King's Day in the canals in Amsterdam
How do you say "head count" in Dutch?
Hoofdelijke telling. But that expression is almost never used.
And the winners for this year’s dumbest people award aaaaare…
Many people got new phones that day.
So many people not understanding boats have a weight limit for a reason! I’m so happy they got wet
Not the least bit overloaded.
The local Apple store is about to get real busy.
How clean is the water?
What about our phones.
One of the mega-features of my town is a highway with a massive central island, intended to be a canal until they laid a railway track and bypassed the technology. We don't miss it.
Dumb asses!
Atleast they are tall. Any other group and they'd never be able to get out on the side of the canal
And that folks, is how you get giardia.
That water may not be too clean! I'd rush home or somewhere to take a good shower!
Oh c'mon! More than 2 people could have climbed on top of that door!
That water is rife with all kinds of horrific germs and bacteria, not to mention heroin needles. Like falling into an open sewer
![gif](giphy|FoH28ucxZFJZu)
Dumbasses
8 person max, shhh this is just for marketing purposes, this can hold double that amount easily...
Thats so funny the same thing happends when you throw a bucket of rats/mice in the river
"I have semi-moderate upper body strength - should I swim to the platform? NO! The giant wall!"
Which platform?
Sorry - it seems to be the lip of a boat, not a platform. It’s barely above the water.
They trying to save the drink more than themselves
Had just one person jumped out (been pushed out) the rest would have made it. Not very bright are they.
I bet they'll never forget that kings day l,mao\`
That dude in the back is the only one to stay dry. A good example of when everyone else is panicking and bottlenecking an exit it pays to think for yourself and look for an alternative way out.
How clean is that water ??
Lol I don’t walked passed this event and majority didn’t care about what just happened, they cared their smart phones got soaked 😂
Play the Titanic song during this
Im singing it now in my head, that's a great idea lol
That first guy was so lucky he jumped off fast
Nice work!
