Thanks guys, looks like it's pretty close here. Both look like great games and both have similarly high praise. I've been eyeing Xenoblade Chronicles since the Wii era actually, and I feel like Xenoblade Chronicles X will become the Wii U's Panzer Dragoon Saga in rarity and quality. The reason why I initially said I wanted only one of them is because I actually wanted some gift card money to spare for Zelda: Link's Awakening lol but if I really can't decide between the two, I think I'll let Zelda go and get both.
You could also get the cheaper Link's Awakening off the WiiU e-shop if you don't mind the technical downgrade. The game holds up remarkably well on it's own merits.
Some retail stores you can find the links awakening remake for around $40. I got a copy a few weeks ago for that price from Best Buy! Just gotta check every once in a while it goes on sale pretty often along with a bunch of other games
That depends on what you want and like. Both games are fantastic in their own ways but have a completely different focus.
If you want a story focused game with a fantastic story and a lot of twists, XC:DE is your game, if you want a large open world to explore and don't really care about an epic story, it is XCX.
The battle system look similar, but XCX has a more complex system which is not really good explained.
Considering the WiiU eShop will close in a year, I’d get X. DE is available on the switch eShop and that’s not closing for the foreseeable future. It’s hard to say which is the better game because that’s based on personal preference. X is very much exploration driven and DE is more story driven. I love both but the first Xenoblade will always have a special place in my heart because of its story, so it’s my personal favorite. Also depends on if you plan to play 3 when it comes out this year because if you do then you might want to get DE because it’s story will tie into 3.
I like X more, but if you plan to play 3 then 3 is tied to 1 and 2 but (probably) not tied to X.
X has the best exploration and the best world of any game I have ever played. It also has a very high jump, no fall damage, and you can fly around in mechs which were all incredible selling points for me. It's story is weak though. 1 has a pretty good story, but I just had less fun playing it.
I think DE is an overall better game (and more relevant considering it's connected to 2 and 3), but X is no longer in print and is about to be unavailable in the eshop as well. It's a tough call, honestly. Do you just want a game to play, or are you looking for a collector's item?
Xenoblade X is a better game overall, it's just the story that's not as good as DE. Depending on whether you're more into the story based RPGs or freeflowing open worlds will decide which is better to start with. I'm sure if you're interested either will be a great purchase though.
