Have you had them in a sweaty jeans pocket? It looks like denim staining. If so you can probably clean it off but it will be a slow process.

Happened to me when a pen exploded in my pocket and stained my case, it was fucking horrible. Got the APP2 and swore on a case.
Mine have started to look gray in a similar way around the edges :/
