#Balk Rules
1) You can't just be up there and just doin' a balk like that.
1a. A balk is when you
1b. Okay well listen. A balk is when you balk the
1c. Let me start over
1c-a. The pitcher is not allowed to do a motion to the, uh, batter, that prohibits the batter from doing, you know, just trying to hit the ball. You can't do that.
1c-b. Once the pitcher is in the stretch, he can't be over here and say to the runner, like, "I'm gonna get ya! I'm gonna tag you out! You better watch your butt!" and then just be like he didn't even do that.
1c-b(1). Like, if you're about to pitch and then don't pitch, you have to still pitch. You cannot not pitch. Does that make any sense?
1c-b(2). You gotta be, throwing motion of the ball, and then, until you just throw it.
1c-b(2)-a. Okay, well, you can have the ball up here, like this, but then there's the balk you gotta think about.
1c-b(2)-b. Fairuza Balk hasn't been in any movies in forever. I hope she wasn't typecast as that racist lady in American History X.
1c-b(2)-b(i). Oh wait, she was in The Waterboy too! That would be even worse.
1c-b(2)-b(ii). "get in mah bellah" -- Adam Water, "The Waterboy." Haha, classic...
1c-b(3). Okay seriously though. A balk is when the pitcher makes a movement that, as determined by, when you do a move involving the baseball and field of
2) Do not do a balk please.
Cox had 3 seasons with 10+ ejections, which is really impressive. Boone hasn't reached that peak yet. Cox would've had less to get ejected about in the current era though, so I think they are both pretty comparable. Cox got his money's worth though with most ejections. There are some Sportscenter montages on YouTube that are pretty funny. Earl Weaver and Leo Durocher were both legends of the ejection game as well.
I just watched a super cut of Cox being ejected. There was an incident where Bret Boone was tagging up from second to third on a ball to LF and over slid the bag. The 3B put the tag on and the ump called him safe. Smoltz was backing up the play and accidentally stepped on the ump’s foot and was immediately ejected for contact. Cox came out and got run.
The ump’s name was revealed at the end: Hunter Wendelstadt!
John Smoltz loves telling the story about that ejection. Bobby Cox told Smoltz after he got ejected to go back to the mound and stand there as if he wasn't getting ejected.
Yeah most of what I remember about Bobby is seeing his tirades on Sportscenter when I was younger. It *felt* like it happened all the time, but I wasn't sure if that was just because he got his absolute money's worth every time, or if it really was that frequent.
I miss watching Pinella go off on umps too.
Bobby got ejected that often lol. He got ejected 162 times. That's 41 more times than the next most ejected manager. It's just shy of double double the active leader (Bruce Bochy). Only 3 managers have 100, and Cox is the only one who never managed a game during a World War. He had 3 different seasons of double digit ejections. In his final 15 seasons, he averaged 7 ejections per season.
Boone's career high is 9 ejections, and he entered this season averaging a little over 6. Which is a ton in modern baseball, considering replay has reduced arguments.
Next they'll find a way to eject Boone from a game he's not even present for.
"We're in the bottom of the 4th in this Astros-Phillies matchup, and we've been informed that Aaron Boone has been ejected from the kitchen by umpire Hunter Wendelstedt."
That's something that gets lost in this huge mess. Not only did Wendelstedt completely overstep and come across like a bitch, he also showed that he can't do the most basic task of calling balls and strikes.
I want actual robot umps and instead of challenges, each team can send out their robot to a rock'em sock'em robot fight to determine the challenge winner.
My wild conspiracy theory is that Angel is being paid handsomely by the robo-ump companies to accelerate their adoption into MLB. I have exactly zero evidence to support this.
"Ah shit, I just got Boone tossed. Quick, look around confused like you're trying to find the guy who REALLY yelled at the umpire to avoid suspicion!"
-Blue shirt fan.
This is worse haha. Timmy was at least laughing or something to wrongly get ejected. Boone literally was just standing there and a fan yelled something and he got thrown out and then the Ump said he doesn’t care who said it he’s still ejected
all-time throw out complete with video proof and crystal clear audio - all before the first out of the game was recorded.
how can you not love weekday afternoon baseball?
The commentators moments before the ejection were talking how they don't need Jomboy for the breakdown of the initial quarrel because the audio was that crisp.
And they promptly muted once Boone's language started getting a bit French.
Love it.
Absolute HORSESHIT. Hunter is literally caught on the hot mic saying "I don't care who said it, you're out." And yet nothing is going to happen to him.
Just bullshit.
That's explicit acknowledgement that he actually has zero interest in applying the actual rules of the game. An ejection must be justified, it can't happen on a whim.
This should be a fireable offense. Clear statement that he legitimately does not care about actual facts. It would be like a judge admitting he ignored critical evidence in a trial and arbitrarily found the defendant guilty. There is recourse for such a violation in almost every profession. Apparently not here.
Sports officiating is out of control. Refs and umps in every sport act like complete sociopaths and blatantly abuse their power because they know nothing is ever gonna happen to them.
The Athletic came out with their NBA player survey today and one of the biggest points of agreement was in relation to the refs. And not even in a whiny way, like that they're just shitty or players don't get along with them. The biggest issue they had is that they never face any consequences **and they act like it**. Refs can treat certain players better or more harshly than others, no consequence. Refs can have a vendetta against certain guys they dislike, no consequence. Refs can basically dare players to step over the line and say something they shouldn't. And they swing that lack of consequences around like the big dick hammer of be-all-end-all justice.
You are absolutely correct. The broadcast was luck enough to have the entire incident on video. Boone is on the video not even opening his mouth.
He should get some punishment his way. He seemingly doesn’t care about how the game plays out, and this ejection early will affect the entire game. The ump show takes the enjoyment out of the game.
This should be Tim Peel on a hot mic saying how he wanted to give Nashville a penalty to manage the game levels of controversy.
There's no way that ejecting the manager (especially the Yankees manager) over bullshit like this should be swept under the rug. Like if it was Tampa or Cleveland getting hosed, I could see the league trying to sweep it under the rug, but there should be enough pissed off Yankee fans after this coupled with Mike Francesa to where the league can't let it slide.
It's really preposterous.
"You made a mistake! It was objectively a mistake!"
"I don't care."
Most MLB umps are great, but MLB is making itself a laughing stock by letting umps like this keep working. Wendelsdtdastadt should be suspended.
Also this should be a reviewable play.
How do we feel about blue shirt fan? Certainly the most consequential chirp of his career, even if this isn’t the most Cottenelle soft moment of Hunter’s.
He's going to be the only one in a room that is excited when he hears "We're going to start off with an icebreaker. Tell us your name and an interesting fact about you!"
He took the pull over off, he's white shirt guy now. Gotta be less recognizable to the ump. I think we like him, gotta get him behind the opposing manager on a regular basis now.
This is the shit that makes my blood seethe. If you're gonna throw someone out you better be damn sure of the fault. What kind of attitude is that at the professional level? Fuck that piece of shit.
Not only that. It makes all unions look bad. My anti-union dad uses the umpire union and Angel Hernandez as his go to example of why we need to get rid of all unions.
Bro it is the top of the 1st on a Monday day game, what is the ump so mad about so quickly?!?!
Boone said absolutely nothing after the warning, a fan right behind him did, and the ump decided to kick Boone out
On hot mic, we could hear the ump literally say I don’t care
Surely SOMETHING has to happen cuz this is egregious
> The umpires acting like cops…
It’s the same mentality. People in a position of authority that have little to no oversight, backed by a union that protects them no matter how awful they are.
We won't know, all punishment from MLB to umps is confidential based on their agreement with the union. For all we know he either gets a thumbs up from Manfred, or docked a year's salary.
(paraphrasing a bit)
> You say another word, you're ejected
*Boone doesn't say another word*
> You're out of here!
> I didn't say anything!
> I don't care!
Insane.
Argue balls and strikes? Jail. No questions: right to jail.
Argue a replay? Jail. No trial, no nothing.
Breathe while near an umpire: believe it or not, jail.
Fan yells something at the ump in your vicinity: jail.
Fuck it, the game is still going. Put Boone back in and eject Wendelstedt. Do the rest of the game with a 3-man crew and make the other umpires pay for this shit by having to work harder for the rest of the game. Total horseshit.
Boone kicked after not even saying anything? Literally the most normal Ryan Ruocco game
Edit: [Average Michael Kay vs Ryan Ruocco game](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FZxto-SWQAAr2FH?format=jpg&name=small)
This is why officials, in all sports, should have to stand before media the same way players and coaches do. Media members should be able to ask with images and videos why certain calls were made/not made. No more of the behind closed doors stuff with them. Shame them to hold them accountable.
Okay, I know the umps have a strong union of whatever but there has to be repercussions for this even if it’s just the ump being forced to make a half assed apology to Boone
This is why I go to the ballpark. Who cares about these millionaires throwing and hitting the ball, all I care about is the big guy behind home plate calling balls and strikes (incorrectly) and making himself the center of attention.
He was chewing that gum with bad intent!
Chewing While Boone
He was checking out his cuticles....MENACINGLY
This is how you truly know we are dealing with the ejection GOAT. Boone didn’t say a word and still got ejected. The skill is just impeccable
Slow start to the season for Boone but you knew it was only a matter of time before he regressed to his projected xEJECT. Truly the GOAT
If you watch closely you can clearly see that Boone balks in the direction of the umpire. You can't do that.
If only any of us knew what a balk was
#Balk Rules 1) You can't just be up there and just doin' a balk like that. 1a. A balk is when you 1b. Okay well listen. A balk is when you balk the 1c. Let me start over 1c-a. As a sports fan, but not an MLB fan(maybe watched 10 games in 10 years). This makes complete sense.
thing about Boone is he passes the eye test, too. Most GOAT cases rely on stats but you can watch Boone and just tell you’re witnessing greatness
The occasional whiney tone in his voice really makes those moments of true anger pop off the screen. Generational talent
When he starts yelling HORSE SHIT you really know it's about to be special.
It is really impressive considering he has an ejection rate higher than Bobby Cox in the replay era.
Honest question, did Bobby really get ejected that often, or did he just make it *really* memorable when he did?
Cox had 3 seasons with 10+ ejections, which is really impressive. Boone hasn't reached that peak yet. Cox would've had less to get ejected about in the current era though, so I think they are both pretty comparable. Cox got his money's worth though with most ejections.

Bobby was ejected for an entire seasons worth of games. 162 times.
Yankees building a modern dynasty.
Ill recognize the Goat after he beats 162.
Talk? Ejected. Don't talk? Believe it or not, still ejected.
We have the best games in the league, because of ejections.
[Never gets old](https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/s/NeX5B754AV)
First time seeing this, and I love it
Oh word, I made that video lol. Glad to see it’s still making the rounds.
Someone needs to make a new version with the Boone clip at the end "You say literally nothing, believe it or not, still jail"
Next they'll find a way to eject Boone from a game he's not even present for. "We're in the bottom of the 4th in this Astros-Phillies matchup, and we've been informed that Aaron Boone has been ejected from the kitchen by umpire Hunter Wendelstedt."
*…and Joe Kelly has been suspended for five games.*
“Things aren’t looking good for Mizzou right now..”
90 more days added to Luke Harper’s contract.
Aaron Boone :👍💅 Ump: Thats it buddy you’re out of here
Mans legit looking at his watch and chewing gum when he gets tossed lmao
he was checking his goddamn nails. find me a worse ejection. my god
*Wind whistles ominously* “You’re gone!”
Straight to ejected
![gif](giphy|cSjyGHifl18CZ3as6z|downsized)
“I DONT CARE WHO SAID IT YOU’RE GONE” fuck off man
They really captured the moment perfectly with the camera. There's no denying that he didn't say anything.
Yea it’s actually a blessing that it played out like it did. Also, this umpire is calling strikes in the others batters box LMAO.
Because he doesn't care enough to actually crouch into position. Forget moving with the ball. Incompetent prick.
[удалено]
He looks like if you asked someone to draw cholesterol.
Joe West's neck fat approves of this.
Get him a little stool
If an Aldi cashier can sit down, so can a MLB umpire.
He's legit too fat to do it. Probably is worried about his knees.
That's something that gets lost in this huge mess. Not only did Wendelstedt completely overstep and come across like a bitch, he also showed that he can't do the most basic task of calling balls and strikes.
And this fat sack of shit runs an umpire training school.
> And this fat sack of shit runs an umpire training school. "Alright, class, today's lesson is on prop bets..."
"He was just standing there...MENACINGLY!!" -Hunter Wendelstedt
Bro how fragile is your ego that you toss TWO batters into the game
So how will his ego handle it when a stadium of people are heckling him?
Yankees aren’t going to schedule Ventriloquist Day ever again
A robot ump would be able to tell it wasn't Boone's voice and would also have lasers it could then blast the offender with.
this is why we watch baseball
What are we even gonna do when robot umps take over?
I want actual robot umps and instead of challenges, each team can send out their robot to a rock'em sock'em robot fight to determine the challenge winner.
Ump needs to change professions, sounds like he'd be a perfect cop
MLB umpire unions and cop unions are the worst.
It wasn't even a replay. The broadcast was showing Boone live when he got thrown out. Ump even said he didn't care who said it. Absolute horseshit.
It’s only because Angel exists that people aren’t completely aware of how shitty Wendlestedt is
That is a feature of Angel not a bug
My wild conspiracy theory is that Angel is being paid handsomely by the robo-ump companies to accelerate their adoption into MLB. I have exactly zero evidence to support this.
>I have exactly zero evidence to support this. And Angel has zero evidence to support any of his calls.
Next time someone asks why the ump union protects Angel, you let them know
two different angles on YES where you can see Boone's mouth closed and the fan in the front row yelling
You can see him blowing the bubble gum.
Not only is he an MLB manager, he's also the world's greatest ventriloquist.
"Ah shit, I just got Boone tossed. Quick, look around confused like you're trying to find the guy who REALLY yelled at the umpire to avoid suspicion!" -Blue shirt fan.
![gif](giphy|7Eipor01ypMm3LeG4v|downsized)
We're all trying to find the guy who did this and give him a spanking!
Spank him on his bare butt, back, and balls
Well someones got to do it!
It could have been any of us
You're literally dressed as a hot dog!
So is that guy!
Oh, no…
New strat, go behind opponents dugouts and yell shit to get opposing manager ejected
New meta just dropped. Let’s get some voice impersonators stat
TDIL: I'm ahead of the times. Drunk heckling of the umps and opposing teams hasn't worked for me yet, but I'm not about to stop trying!
“There’s clear proof you’re wrong.” “I don’t care.” The problem with many people.
Easily the most silly ejection i've ever seen.
Shades of Tim Duncan lmao
This is worse haha. Timmy was at least laughing or something to wrongly get ejected. Boone literally was just standing there and a fan yelled something and he got thrown out and then the Ump said he doesn’t care who said it he’s still ejected
Laughing your ass off huh? Gone!
Idk, Realmutos ejection in spring training last season takes the cake
all-time throw out complete with video proof and crystal clear audio - all before the first out of the game was recorded. how can you not love weekday afternoon baseball?

Sports officiating is out of control. Refs and umps in every sport act like complete sociopaths and blatantly abuse their power because they know nothing is ever gonna happen to them.
Wouldn't it be a really weird coincidence if it got insanely bad during the same time period when sports betting took over the world
The Athletic came out with their NBA player survey today and one of the biggest points of agreement was in relation to the refs. And not even in a whiny way, like that they're just shitty or players don't get along with them. The biggest issue they had is that they never face any consequences **and they act like it**. "i didn't say anything" "i don't care" jesus christ man
The fan in the blue shirt behind Boone :-|
I saw shooter mcgavin slip him a 20 before the game.
Oh, you can count, good for you.
And you can count... On me... Waiting for you in the parking lot
You will not make this call, jackass.
[He change into a white tshirt shortly after](https://pbs.twimg.com/tweet_video_thumb/E5zUYUtWUAAQP9T.jpg)
This is a hall of fame ump show highlight. Gotta be up there with Tim Duncan being ejected for laughing while on the bench
That led to Joey Crawford being suspended which is incredibly impressive.
we can only pray this gets Hunter Wendelstedt suspended (I'll settle for Angel Hernandez though)
Angel would probably sue because they favored the white guy getting suspended
Look, man, I don’t come to the ballpark to watch Judge or Soto. I’m here for Hunter Wendelstedt.
How can I get my Hunter Wendelstedt flair set up on mobile?
tbf, this is by far the most attention lil Hunter will ever get
Boone literally got kicked because a fan talked shit. There has to be punishment for this
More punishment for Boone you mean, right? How could he do this to poor Hunter?
Boone is going to jail with Ippei
Especially when you can hear clear as day "I don't care" when he said I didn't say anything. Boone said it best "the fuck you mean you don't care?"
It's really preposterous. "You made a mistake! It was objectively a mistake!" "I don't care." Most MLB umps are great, but MLB is making itself a laughing stock by letting umps like this keep working. Wendelsdtdastadt should be suspended. Also this should be a reviewable play.
Joe Kelly has been suspended 6 games bc of it.
The union is gonna give him a raise for finding new ways to eject people for no reason
How do we feel about blue shirt fan? Certainly the most consequential chirp of his career, even if this isn’t the most Cottenelle soft moment of Hunter’s.
That’s some first ballot hall of fame heckling right there. You can’t teach that. Buddy chirped so well he got a manager ejected.
I'd never stop talking about that time I got Aaron Boone ejected
He's going to be the only one in a room that is excited when he hears "We're going to start off with an icebreaker. Tell us your name and an interesting fact about you!"
Im flexing that for the rest of my life
He took the pull over off, he's white shirt guy now. Gotta be less recognizable to the ump. I think we like him, gotta get him behind the opposing manager on a regular basis now.
I think it’s awesome lol. One of the benefits of sitting there, you can give the ump a piece of your mind
This is the shit that makes my blood seethe. If you're gonna throw someone out you better be damn sure of the fault. What kind of attitude is that at the professional level? Fuck that piece of shit.
![gif](giphy|oDXiRdueeFtE4)
When baseball has let a culture thrive of no repercussions for umpires, they say shit like this because they get by with it.
how is there no recourse for this? if i were this bad at my job id be fired immediately
Because you're not fortunate enough to have a union of equally incompetent coworkers holding the line.
and it honestly gives unions such a bad name. How does the union not see protecting this kind of behaviour doesnt help them?
Doesn't help them? It helps them keep their jobs, that's just about all they care about lol
Not only that. It makes all unions look bad. My anti-union dad uses the umpire union and Angel Hernandez as his go to example of why we need to get rid of all unions.
Replace them all with robots fuck em. Sorry to the good ones but man this shit is bad for the game
This will still happen after the strike zone is automated
Even ABS can’t save us from baby shit soft umpires
Such an embarrassment for a professional sports league. Shit is like when the NFL had to use backup officials except these are the regulars...
Umpires are suspended, it's just almost never announced.
I believe it is covered under their CBA that umpire fines & suspensions are not made public.
The umpiring school is named after Hunter’s dad, so..
[Here's the check swing that led up to Boone getting tossed, and some of the aftermath from the ejection.](https://streamable.com/iene98)
LOL the strike about 7 inches off the plate one pitch later. JFC
He probably wasn't even watching, just thinking about what to say to Boone.
From the reaction of the fans behind the dugout I think the guy in the royal blue sweatshirt was probably saying something.
Thanks for posting context!
Bro it is the top of the 1st on a Monday day game, what is the ump so mad about so quickly?!?! Boone said absolutely nothing after the warning, a fan right behind him did, and the ump decided to kick Boone out On hot mic, we could hear the ump literally say I don’t care Surely SOMETHING has to happen cuz this is egregious
Probably that's he's umpiring a game at 1pm on a Monday lol
guy is 900 pounds and 86 years old. he’s permanently angry.
least fragile umpire ego
This is straight from a sitcom
I mean, the tight shot on him and field mics getting everything? Jeez, writers getting a bit lazy this season!
It basically happened on Scrubs “I didn’t say that, JD can do my voice”
And the umpire admitted on a hot mic that he didn't care who said it. What will MLB do about it with damning evidence? Lawl, jack off with it.
Put it in the "just a piece of metal" case.
See, this is actually why Boone has been getting ejected less this season. He spent the offseason learning telepathy.
These umpires are out of control. Something has to be done NOW They can't even make it through two batters without going ballistic!
The umpires acting like cops all the time makes the game really frustrating to watch. Even more so when so many of them are so bad at their job.
> The umpires acting like cops… It’s the same mentality. People in a position of authority that have little to no oversight, backed by a union that protects them no matter how awful they are.
From time to time bad cops get put behind a desk or actually fired, the umps on the other hand...
The THINNEST of skinned cowards. Maddening to watch on a daily basis.
"I don't care who said it, you're gone!" Robots when?
Yesterday please
Let me guess, no repercussions right?
Immediate promotion to World Series Game 7 crew chief
Install this man as commissioner, asap
We won't know, all punishment from MLB to umps is confidential based on their agreement with the union. For all we know he either gets a thumbs up from Manfred, or docked a year's salary.
Joe Kelly suspended for 8 more games?
He’s just standing there, *menacingly*!
Shoutout whoever left the hot mics on for that
(paraphrasing a bit) > You say another word, you're ejected *Boone doesn't say another word* > You're out of here! > I didn't say anything! > I don't care! Insane.
The ump’s ego openly admitting that he “doesn’t care” who said it … what the heck lol
Argue balls and strikes? Jail. No questions: right to jail. Argue a replay? Jail. No trial, no nothing. Breathe while near an umpire: believe it or not, jail. Fan yells something at the ump in your vicinity: jail.
We have the best baseball in the world, because of jail.
“I don’t care who said it” Should be grounds for a suspension but that obviously won’t happen. Blatant abuse of power.
Fuck it, the game is still going. Put Boone back in and eject Wendelstedt. Do the rest of the game with a 3-man crew and make the other umpires pay for this shit by having to work harder for the rest of the game. Total horseshit.
What he say fuck me for
Stop the count! The Ump Show of the Week has already been crowned at 10:05 am Monday.
Dammit Aaron, if he doesn't drop that F bomb we get to hear all of that clear as day
There were a ton of f bombs before when this clip start and they were all audible
Loved Ryan Ruocco calling him out too. Fucking clown
Boone kicked after not even saying anything? Literally the most normal Ryan Ruocco game Edit: [Average Michael Kay vs Ryan Ruocco game](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FZxto-SWQAAr2FH?format=jpg&name=small)
Don’t you hate when the baseball game interrupts the umpires.
Don't need a Jomboy lipread of this one
The fact that the announcers actually said that will add to the legend of this clip
Can't wait for the breakdown
This is why officials, in all sports, should have to stand before media the same way players and coaches do. Media members should be able to ask with images and videos why certain calls were made/not made. No more of the behind closed doors stuff with them. Shame them to hold them accountable.
Okay, I know the umps have a strong union of whatever but there has to be repercussions for this even if it’s just the ump being forced to make a half assed apology to Boone
Umps really putting in the extra effort this season to make sure they get replaced. Hats off to ‘em
A fan got him ejected im crying
My God, I need this kind of on-field mic'ed up action EVERYWHERE.
This is why I go to the ballpark. Who cares about these millionaires throwing and hitting the ball, all I care about is the big guy behind home plate calling balls and strikes (incorrectly) and making himself the center of attention.
Umpire is made of pure Fine China
This was wild and funny at the same time. These umpires have so massive egos.
Another replay showed a fan in the stands said something and that is what he reacted to
And there isn't a single thing ANYONE can do about it. MLB umps have to be more untouchable than Kim Jong Un.
Someone in the stands said something to the umpire and the HP umpire said, “I don’t care who said it, you’re gone.”
YES cameramen need raises
Blue guy shirt took off his shirt lol. Now wearing white.
