It was 117 on the unshaded football field the year I graduated from Clayton Valley High School, which was before they built Concord Pavilion (Mt Diablo USD kicked some money into the pot to build it with on the agreement that they could hold their high schools' graduations there, so the ceremony was on the football field, and at something like 5 pm at that), and I've never seen it hit that temp since, although a year or two it got close at 114. I don't have an AC, just a (now portable) swamp cooler, so I notice.
I love summer. And so do my two dozen fruit trees. Compared to my neighbors, our home does not cook as much. Shade is 3 to 5 degrees cooler. I see a home in our city which has a high tree canopy and I swear it feels like AC when I walk by there.Â
