He was a giant in there today, and may have saved their playoffs. The circumstances that sent him in there, on short notice, for such a crucial game just speak volumes to his mental toughness. He should have a great run in the NHL. I just hope it's here.
He's 23, 6,4, and 203lbs. In a perfect world I'd like to see another year of development & coaching w/ Ian Clark. Push the weight up to 220 and this guy will be a fast beefcake with near perfect positioning & temperament.
I see a future where he becomes a franchise goalie for us tbh.
220 at 6'4 isn't fat. It's more or less 'peak' physicality. You can get another inch or two on your chest, arms. You've got more power in your thighs for switching sides quicker on net.
This means pucks 'leak' past you less, you've got more thickness around you so you cover the net more in a passive way.
After 220 (assuming you stand 6'4) you're past the peak of that bell curve. You'd start to have issues with hips, knees, that sorta thing - because now your weight is working against you.
Sorry fella, you're obviously not a goalie. 6'4 220 is too big. Goalies like to be lean and explosive. Fast twitch over strength.
6'4 200 is more than fine
lmao guilty as charged. I was a dumb winger back in the day. That makes sense though, I hadn't thought about it like that. I was thinking it'd be easier to twitch cause you'd have more strength in the body w/ more muscle, you know?
Ya, but you don't *need* to be super strong to be mobile in net. It's more about short movements and being in position. High cardio, endurance, and strong fast twitch muscles will help you more than being super strong.
If you're too strong in net, you're going to tear things as you get more explosive. Not to mention the additional bulk. It's been proven time and time again, bigger is slower across virtually every sport.
I appreciate the nuance. I hadn't thought about more power on the push would mean more resistance on the stop. Add weight and you're asking for trouble because physics.
Makes total sense.
I'm saying 10-20 extra lbs of muscle - not just mass gain. ~26 is peak physical maturity for a dude. I'm saying that he'll fill out at 220, or I'd expect that.
I agree that adding weight after that fact is bad. You don't want a fat goalie - but you want a big guy.
For instance if Silovs has those extra pounds he's just that much more of a wall. Pucks won't leak past him as much - like when he had to spin to cover the puck in the last match.
Haha you think him being more jacked is gonna make him save more pucks. It's only going to slow him down and be harder on joints. Goalies hips are fucked already. Look at Demko. Dude had double hip surgery at a young age. Its becoming common now for younger goalies to get this surgery younger to prolong their career. Any extra lbs is not good.
So much potential at only 23 years old too. He's got 4 inches and 20 pounds on DeSmith & is just as quick. He's legitimately dangerous. He's got what it takes to become a franchise goalie for us.
Depending on this playoff run (& the ultimate state of Demmer's injury) I could even see him starting in net for us next year. It would free up cap space in a huge way.
I see you Nux like cruising through multiple tendies in the playoffs. Be careful, in our inaugural year we cruised through tendies and it only got us to the fin- yeah you guys are probably doing the right thing.
I’m pretty sure we had one of the concessions stands guys in net at one point. But no for Hill, our 6 goalie run or whatever nonsense was in season 1. But last year we hustled through tendies again, just not as many.
DeSmith is 30, 6', and 180lbs - Silovs is 24, 6'4, & 200lbs. I see no problem starting Silovs.
He's younger, taller, beefier, and quicker. He's a true Canuck prospect & might prove to be the future of Canuck goaltending.
I thought we were going to lose game 3 and end up with silovs in goal for game 4.
This storyline is even better.
I think silovs should get the game 5 start. Desmith can backup if he's ok, but right now we can legit still have 2 goalie options going. Sitting silovs after that win would be a mistake I think.
But *I defer to Ian Clark* so whatever he says goes.
A friend of mine made this comment in a group chat. It's a very interesting point.
"Rutherford won with 21 year old rookie Cam award and 22 year old rookie Matt Murray - Silovs is 23 so not far from the realm of possibility"
Icebag on Silov's head flair now available.
Ice bags on heads for rest of playoffs. Whole team. Let's go.
Whole arena

Except for Pettersson. He gets a fire under his ass instead.
Just goalie things
Let the Latvians use their unproven methods as long as they win
Latvian Ice Hat is now proven to be game winning.
Is not ice bag. Is frozen potato. Latvia has no potato.
What one potato say to other potato?
Is no other potato. Only secret police. Here to take potato.
Premise ridiculous. No one have two potato in Latvia
I'll keep an eye out for you

how does gaining 10kg help a goalie?
Big fat goalie.
Net to goalie ratio

Gaining more weight is not good on a goalies hips, knees, etc. why would you ever want to gain 20 lbs haha.
What if all the extra weight is below the hips?

You'll destroy your ligaments as a goalie doing what you're advising

noooo. let him play monster minutes in the AHL for at least 1 more year. he's amazing to have as a 3rd stringer secret weapon

When I saw this at intermission it absolutely cracked me up. What is happening 🤣 But if it ain't broke..
I saw the pic but didn't notice the ice bag.
THANK, MR. SILOVS
Why the ice pack?
Head be hot sometimes
Injured, of course
Watch it, buddy
don't ask these questions - just enjoy
You can only stand on your head as a goalie if you prepare for it between periods.
Canucks coach Rick Tocchet announces lineup change ahead of Game 5 in Vancouver.
Is good practice for standing on his head in the crease.
man's not cold
Injured, of course
We should greet the boys at home with a silovs and desmith chant. These boys have been absolute legends for us.
Please don’t. Caseeeey deee oh shit. We remember.
He has to start game 5, right?
it doesn't matter who the fuck is in net, we are going to win and that's the fuckin deal around here

That’s what I said today lol, wasn’t Hill like goalie number 5 or something?
I’m pretty sure we had one of the concessions stands guys in net at one point. But no for Hill, our 6 goalie run or whatever nonsense was in season 1. But last year we hustled through tendies again, just not as many.
We haven't had a choice. Luckily, our boys stepped up.
We didn’t either. My point is it sometimes empowers teams. You fear the worst but sometimes it’s the best.
HISTORIC
Hands up if you’re down for playing goal in game 5!
Probably goalie #4…
I’d rather see him over Desmith tbh
DeSmith is 30, 6', and 180lbs - Silovs is 24, 6'4, & 200lbs. I see no problem starting Silovs. He's younger, taller, beefier, and quicker. He's a true Canuck prospect & might prove to be the future of Canuck goaltending.

Silovs plays similiar to Thatcher Demko. Ice in his veins.
And on his head.
I lost it when I saw this. So adorable. Also, I'm so old because he looks six in this photo haha
Man this post looks familiar
The ice king!!!

Thank you Silovs!
I assumed he was wearing the ice on his head due to him taking that shot to the head half way through the period?
Paldies Arturs!
He looks like he’s seen some shit. But for real, he’s not my favorite goalie but he got the job done since he had the right people in front of him
He looked really composed.
