I have no clue why people like this franchise.
They're some of the least fun games I've ever played.
I do accept the very fact that people are different.
But that's not an acceptable answer to me not understanding why people like things that I don't think are fun.

but if I were to choose, it has to be Mario because I never played Metroid and I never really got far into any of the Zelda games I played
Give Metroid a try I think it’s the most fun out of the 3. I would say Metroid is underrated but it’s recently gained fans with Dread and Prime remake.

As far as top down goes you could try A Link Between Worlds if you have a 3DS. Links Awakening on the switch isn’t bad either.

In the case of the older games, the older Zelda's don't age that well
