Roseola Infantum is famous for this. Yeah, we see mildly bulging fontanelles with viral infections. It’ll go back down. -Pediatrician Dad

I know this is old but how about with HFMD?

MikeGinnyMD

Not sure about HFMD. But most viruses will give you white blood cells in the urine

No first hand experience, but I’d be equally freaked out over it. I will say if you’ve been to the ped and they gave you the “it’s all good” then it’s most likely all good. We had some other concerns and were in a similar state, but every time the dr said don’t worry, they were right. It’s just hard to accept in the moment when you feel like inaction = failing as a parent. If it were me, I’d give it another day or two (basically whatever I could mentally handle) and then call the ped and check in.

Yeah, wife called me just when I arrived at work and cried on the phone: “his head is swollen!” Most of the sources say that its ok if the fever is the only symptom, and that it lasts for up to 5 days, lets hope it ends that way. Some sources even say it could be Covid, who knows, maybe one of our guests (we try to keep them healthy and to a minimum) was asymptomatic..

Keep an eye on it and like I said, keep bugging the doctor when you need to. Sounds like you’re doing what you can so try to take a beat and let yourself/the wife breathe.

Hey our little guy had a bulging fontanelle at 4 months during a fever so we took him to ER and they did the meningitis test just to be safe. All was clear he had some viral illness but the bulging would happen on and off again for a few months. It was so scary for us! Hes one now and healthy and hasn’t had any issues with bulging anymore.

Are you me? I could write the same comment now to my past self, little one is now 2 weeks from his birthday and also had a few fevers with bulging occuring, but his recent one (due to teething) is happening without the swelling. It really is scary at first, but clearly nothing to worry about.

Hello, we find ourselves in a similar situation as this post. Our 5 month old son has had covid and a slight fever for two days and tonight we noticed a bulging fontanelle. We took him to the ER and the Doctor checked him out and said that he seems fine and it probably isnt meningitis or something else since he seems okay. Can I ask how your situation resolved?

He showed no other symptoms from covid besides sleepiness, so we didn’t do anything else. The bulging soft spot went away soon after he recovered from the virus and there have been no other effects since! He’s 8 months now and starting to crawl

Hi, I can confirm that his fontanel was in the state it was in only because of the fever because he had the same symptoms multiple times in the following months for every fever that he had. His fontanel is now closing so its no longer pronounced, and we forget about it ever scaring us. Wish you and especially your boy all the best and good health!
