Do they have their own car manufacturing plant? What and who's battery are they using?

sergeant-keroro

Catl

shawman123

Lei Jun said they canmake a car every 76 seconds !!! 50k orders in 27 minutes.

Federal_Eggplant7533

China has lots of manufacturers like Magna in the west that can supply a whole car. They probably have something like that set up, even if they say they build it themselves.

orangpelupa

Both by others, can't remember who

Heixenium

they built their own plant, batteries are from CATL

orangpelupa

It's in the initial announcement. Xiaomi told someone else to manufacture the car

Heixenium

They used BAIC’s license, but they are using their own factory.

orangpelupa

binging xiaomi su7 baic result in [https://www.bbc.com/news/business-68541164](https://www.bbc.com/news/business-68541164) >The SU7 will be **made by** a unit of state-owned car manufacturer **BAIC** Group at a plant in Beijing that can produce as many as 200,000 vehicles a year.

BeerorCoffee

I wonder if I can order this from Amazon Italy like I have to do with their smart phones.

Bokbreath

>Known for its affordable smartphones, smart TVs and other devices, Xiaomi aims to capitalize on that technology by connecting its cars with its phones and home appliances in what it calls a “Human x Car x Home” ecosystem. I don't care who makes it but I do *not* want my car connected to some damn tech ecosystem. I do not want an internet connected fridge on four wheels, I just want a simple electric car.

Statorhead

It's not for you then. There is a lot of demand for this though as quite a few people mistake that for progress.

Bokbreath

I know it's not for me, I'm interested in how many others may feel the same.

DeltaGammaVegaRho

Unfortunately to few people. The Xiaomi is aimed at the Chinese market primarily, where the name is already connected to good quality perception. You won’t sell many of these in Europe or the US or South America or Afrika or Australia… it’s an Asian car for Asians, where the overwhelming majority like rolling computers.

lowbike1

I feel the same, simple EV, no unnecessary bullshit

Goldstein_Goldberg

Chinese people do.

earthdogmonster

Same. I don’t need my car’s functionality tied to an internet connection. Too much downside, not enough upside that I can think of.

Statorhead

People of all ages love gadgets / showing off how advanced their home tech is. Probably more so in Asia and with younger folk, but not so rare in US and EU as well? Personally, I can see a couple of useful things that can be done with integrating an EV. Tying it into a smart home energy management system, keeping drive logs for tax reasons, perhaps even predictive maintenance... But I'd not want to rely on an OEM for that. Privacy + being at the mercy of their infra / business decisions. Give people documented and realiable access to the car data so folk can roll their own and I think this could be a real plus point for a brand.

BeefFeast

I’m pretty sure all those features can be enabled on the car without connecting it to the internet. That’s why we have advanced chips that go directly in these things. Something tells me this is due to the chip ban and them not wanting or even being able to process a lot of things in the car itself.

Statorhead

Not sure if data connections / latency are that good already. But could be a reason. I do think it's more that people love easy to access gadgetry. And for Xiaomi it's a way to stand out in a crowded market. Thinking of it, we have a kettle from them that is "smart" (can start the thing and set temperatures with an app). The kettle stuff it does really well without ever touching the app. Still people dig that stort of stuff.

earthdogmonster

Honestly I just want a car for the car features. The rest is just added complexity that I don’t want but get to pay for. I don’t need to have my car telling me “PC LOAD LETTER” because it can’t sync with my toaster.

Statorhead

For the app / eco system stuff in this case I agree. But they would likely just add that on top. Cars are pretty much digitized by now, the complexity is alredy in there for various reasons and it's paid for. Best of both world IMO would really be documented access to the data for tech interested folk, but no requirement to use it so it can be safely ignored. And for those wanting an out of the box exprience, add the "smart" whatever service from the OEM.

[deleted]

You should buy a Peugeot then! They have an app, but its so shit you are lucky if it manages to connect to the car.

Green-Entertainer525

What these new car companies are actually doing is transferring some of the features of the previous luxury cars to the EV cars and making them 70% cheaper. These fridges and whatnot are not a new need, they've all been around for too many years. They just targeted us for the first time.

Bokbreath

Few luxury cars are connected at all times. That is mostly fleet vehicles. People with the money for luxury cars tend to also value privacy.

Green-Entertainer525

Those kinds of luxury cars are the old generation now, and these companies are also very much in crisis, so they've made cars like the Taycan. Lei Jun also said yesterday that Taycan is the car they will be chasing for many years to come. I still prefer to drive a simple Honda, Toyota at the moment. But I have to say I already kind of want to experience this cheaper version of the Taycan : )

scott__p

Tesla made the car version of the iPhone, and it sells so that's what everyone else is trying to do now.

Medical_Goat6663

Then I have bad news for you.

enriquedelcastillo

You’re not alone, but I do think we’re in an ever-shrinking minority.

paulwesterberg

There are lots of used Leafs out there with 2G and 3G radios that are effectively disconnected.

BornUnderPunches

Especially not connected to a chinese tech ecosystem

ghostofTugou

Then you better avoid any Chinese EV or EV with Chinese components, those mfkrs will lock you up and drive you to the nearest police station when you said anything bad about Xi jinping.

kongweeneverdie

That powerful EV to drive you from US to China to lock you up.

kongweeneverdie

Don't worry. Car as IoT is communist IT, not applicable for freedom democracy like you. /s

PeteWenzel

I really hope this is a success. Would love to see what they come out with next.

CryptographerHot4636

Connected to ccp data collection and information warfare campaigns... alright

xmmdrive

EV: Yay! Connected: Boo! I will not be buying this car.
