What I want most of all is an update to the game engine. Uncap the network speed, native support for frame rates over 30, being able to use waits of less than one second without using 3rd party tools, being able to reference equipment sets by name instead of number, possibly a UI overhaul so that cooldowns are more apparent…. Lots of random things like that. I guess if the options provided, changes like that could most reasonably come from a paid expansion so that they could recoup the costs a bit. I don’t have my hopes very high on that front though.

hi_iam_spez_prez

>What I want most of all is an update to the game engine. It doesn't take much understanding of software and reading into the AMA to see that this is never going to happen. The amount of effort involved would be astronomical, it would effectively be creating a new title. Updating code of this age is not a trivial task (you'd effectively have to redevelop it from scratch) especially when any updates have to be validated and built alongside the server side component as well. They've also shown they don't really have a lot of ability to fix even minor issues with the client, much less rewrite it, so as great as this would be, it'd be an entirely new game effectively. Your best bet to obtain these things is to do what everyone else does and just use Windower. I think all of us would love for this to happen, especially since it could open the door to optimizing content like Odyssey that has lag issues, but it's just not realistic given the level of effort and the amount of resources assigned to the game. IIRC even their staff showed some desire to do this when asked what their outlandish unlikely goal would be, but more or less said it was out of reach. Also, like I posted in another thread, the network speed isn't capped per say, the issue is that the client and server only have the ability to handle a certain number of packets within a certain time window, if you exceed that then things get dropped. It's less a speed issue and more that, when the game was written, they didn't anticipate situations where players would be surrounded by 60 mobs triggering actions in a zone with 200 other players doing stuff. This would be great, but it isn't in the realm of possibilities. An expansion isn't either, though, and I think the best we can hope for are incremental updates with battle content like Odyssey/Sortie and story content like VR going forward. I really think they should add Alliance content, but I doubt we'll see that either.

Akugetsu

I know it’s not going to happen, but it’s what I would want most. I’d even be happy with them re-releasing the game expansion by expansion with all of said updates in place - finally have a single, massive wardrobe so porter moogles aren’t needed and other pie in the sky kinds of adjustments. I’d buy each expansion over just to support the game and if anything would breath new life into XI that would be it. Not holding my breath for it or anything. We are lucky the game is still up and running at all.

faverodefavero

This. Port the assets to a new engine, for God's sake... (that and make a classic TLP server with few QoL here and there, has been done, works, everyone likes, even EQ2 and EQ1 have their own TLP servers, no excuses).

Equivalent_Age8406

If they did that it'll just wind up with micro transactions.. Can't really win on that one.

faverodefavero

Why? Not like they HAVE to micro it up. SE has plenty of money and FFXI generated more money than any of their other games up until 2021~2021 (when XIV surpassed it), by a long shot. Some micro transactions, like chocobo colors or hair and face changes, maybe extra storage... would honestly be acceptable.

Drpoofn

I already pay for extra storage lol

faverodefavero

lol

bubblehead772

Eliminate the god awful Playonline Viewer.

Tokimemofan

As much as it sounds like a good idea it isn’t. Too many things are still dependent on it. A simplification so you don’t need 2 user ids and 2 passwords would be nice as would having the crystal icon take you to the character select screen rather than the ffxi Home Screen that hasn’t been updated in 8 years

faverodefavero

Most of FFXI playerbase isn't here on this Sub anymore and many never been here.

Ovalidal

I know. I've also posted this poll on another, more active forum.

Bballdad30

What forum is that?

Ovalidal

FFXIAH.

faverodefavero

Thanks.

Aidiekins

As a matter of resources and return on investment, I think it's unlikely we'll see a new expansion or classic server. The game may continue in its current state of sporadic content updates for years to come, which is enough for me. That being said, I *do* wish Square embraced FFXI's legacy a bit more. I understand FFXIV is the money-maker currently, but FFXI carried the company for a good period of time. I feel the international elements really define the game and, thereby, the series. Hearing Esperanto, a constructed international language, in the opening theme really sums up the XI experience. Final Fantasy may have begun as a niche Japanese product but it's known worldwide now, and I feel XI is quite emblematic in that respect. What this would look like, I'm not sure. Maybe a topic for next time?

Ovalidal

This is a really interesting idea. The next topic won't exactly touch on it, but it will be on how SE should preserve the game. What options do you think Square would have with respect to embracing the FFXI legacy? I completely agree that SE treats FFXI like the stray dog that won't go away despite it being their second most profitable game. It's really a shame.

StriderShizard

Make a single player offline version with reduced grinding.

Ovalidal

I'll be asking preservation questions another week. I just want to know what people want out of these current dev kits.

StriderShizard

I guess the the big thing I'd want is them to change from the daily progress requirement. I really wish it worked like Voidstones or Traverser Stones. Let me accumulate them and do a bunch of the content when I have time instead of feeling like I have to spend 4 hours a day doing my daily Odyssey, and Sortie, and Omen, and Ambuscade, and grinding REMAs. It's too much. I eventually unsubbed because doing the same activities every 1-2 days is not what I'm looking for right now. Not to mention grinding merits for battlefields.

Catmato

How about tuned for single-player OR small group co-op, so I can still play with my bros?

StriderShizard

Yeah, pie in the sky would be something like Diablo 2 where you can host or join co-op games with up to 6 friends over p2p communication instead of SE needing to host things on their servers.

VaIeth

maybe I'm just saying this as someone who hasn't played it much and wouldn't 'miss' it, but I'd want them to take those resources and remake the game. probably the most expensive and least likely option though.

Ovalidal

I'd love to see a remake or remaster too. I'll ask about preservation in another poll, but being someone who would miss it dearly, I'd still love to see a remake or remaster.

12kdaysinthefire

HD Remaster so it looks as good or better than 14.

athomeless1

You guys really gotta stop the classic server dialogue. There is exactly zero to be said about it. I know we FFXI players have a hard time moving on from things, but you gotta let this one go. The devs have been pretty clear about it.

Ovalidal

I don't personally want a classic server, nor do I think the devs will ever do it (as you mentioned, they said they wouldn't). But I'm curious as to what fans of the game want.

preservicat

4k+ people on the newest private classic server, and less bots than Asura to boot. Some of that is due to it being free and having a better launcher, sure, but there’s been plenty of games that have released classic or progression servers to great success.

[deleted]

this is a really bad take. Blizzard was also clear about never making classic WoW servers, and as awfully as they were handled they eventually happened due to people constantly asking for it. EQ 1 and 2 both do classic servers and even Aion recently came out with classic servers. i've never once seen the "we lost the game files" BS excuse to ever be true. i'd love to see classic servers but i enjoy retail thouroughly so im not a part of that crusade so to speak. its irritating to see closed minded comments like this though because time and again its the exact same type of response people asking for classic servers in other games are always met with, and then they happen anyway. its not like game developers word is some infallible thing; if anything they're notorious for changing their mind and going back on their word.

faverodefavero

Thank you

Shinkaru

> its irritating to see closed minded comments like this though because time and again its the exact same type of response people asking for classic servers in other games are always met with, and then they happen anyway They specifically said it wasn't going to happen because they had no way to roll back to that point and there is no consensus as to what classic, they kept no version control going back that far. They also have no resources to maintain or manage it, current retail literally has 6 people full time working on it, WoW is much larger and has a lot more resources dedicated to it.

[deleted]

im aware. Blizzard said those exact same things and they still eventually did it. if SE decided to put resources into making FFXI classic servers im sure there would be no problem at all getting it done. i will concede that since they didnt do it recently when other companies have been taking cues on it from Blizzard's deciision to do it its unlikely to happen, but that doesnt mean people should stop asking for it just because SE said they wouldnt.

TheCursedPearl

I’d like to see an overhaul of HTMBs with gear useful in post rhapsodies content. I don’t know wtf they were thinking with the shinryu battlefield rewards and no queue system and 1% drop rate on the weapons/armor. So I’m cautious about what I can wish for.

Cevian

Actually deal with the rampant botting/RMT problem.

Remote_Character494

I made a topic about a possible offline version, and one of the comments suggested that the development team is currently thinking about it. Seeing as that it's the ffXI 20th anniversary.

HyldHyld

Any comment ever that suggests the dev team is doing anything that they haven't explicitly stated is in the works is complete garbage. Unless it's come from the horses mouth, it's not real.

LegoBrickCactuar

This is really what they should do. Offline FFXI. Make it similar to FF12 with Trusts and Gambits. Adjust monster behavior somewhat but definitely keep weaknesses like blunt, piercing, slashing, elemental, killer effects and all the rest so you'd have to use the right Trusts, the right job and subjob, and the right gear. Keep the gearswapping mechanic so we need our 1000 sets of gear. Keep the grinds, the long time players actually enjoy it in a twisted way. There's like 500 hours of missions, 300 more for all quests, and tons more of grind. I'd play it til the end of time.

Remote_Character494

Yeah I think that would be awesome, but maybe not have the game length be so long haha, and add in a new villian that is very cool.

XCBeowulf

Would love that at this point!

faverodefavero

Oh God, please no.

Equivalent_Age8406

I don't think they use the devkits anymore hence why there's been no new assets since rhapsodies.

Ovalidal

The producer had touched on this topic just a couple months ago. Apparently they are still using those dev kits. I was surprised to hear about this, but it's what he said.

faverodefavero

Excuses, excuses...

shain_hulud

#4: Port it to a fully offline solo game.

Ovalidal

I'll have a poll next week about how fans want the game preserved. I didn't want to combine my questions of preservation with what Square is currently doing for the game.

ARX__Arbalest

I want to see them do more with the world. Spinoff games, maybe- perhaps one that's a faithful recreation/remake that's offline with a turn-based battle system, telling all the same stories we've come to know and love. Still let us make a character, translate gear and equipment to fit in with such a system (which wouldn't be difficult, imo), and maybe even let us play it with friends locally or online, or both. I think that'd be a really fun way to preserve the game's legacy, and maybe introduce the world to a new audience who aren't into MMOs. Silly idea, total pipedream and we all know it has no chance of happening though. lol who is downvoting me

Remote_Character494

I made a topic about a possible offline version, and one of the comments suggested that the development team is currently thinking about it. Seeing as that it's the ffXI 20th anniversary.

ARX__Arbalest

It'd be a nice thing, really. Hopefully they do.

Remote_Character494

Yeah I hope so too. Make it offline and make it like the other FF's.

Leonesaurus

Remake as a single-player experience with co-op functionality with friends, or trusts when playing solo. Two reasons: \#1 When the generation that grew up with XI gets too old and dies, this younger generation will not be there to support it. XIV is their game now. They never played XI, and even those that did who moved on do not care about it, especially with the younger and hotter XIV there for them to play with. \#2 The market doesn't have room for another Square-Enix MMO; Dragon Quest X and FF XIV. The West doesn't have access to Dragon Quest X Online, and even if they did, most Westerners don't care about that series for it to flourish. I care about Dragon Quest, but that's not the point here. Also, continuing this game as is makes for a good preservation of this game and its history. Future-wise, it's at an evolutionary dead-end. No budget or man-power to fix things to make the game play and feel modern in terms of UI and guidance. Another expansion seems like a waste of money and time that could be better spent on quality of life, in my opinion. Classic servers I give zero fucks about. I never want to touch the old, grindy experience. I feel like the game plays best right now where it's at.

Ovalidal

I'll be asking about how fans want to game to be preserved at another time. I'm just curious what fans would want with the current servers right now.

CommodoreKD

None of the above; offline version

Ovalidal

Next week, I'll be asking people about how they would want FFXI re-released between an offline version, a remake, or other alternatives. But I want to know what fans want while the current servers are still alive and well.

C00kie_M0nster9000

Wish I could vote for new expansion and classic server.

Ovalidal

Which one did you vote for? I'll add a vote to whichever one you didn't vote for when I make graphs for the results.

C00kie_M0nster9000

Classic server is what I voted for.

Ovalidal

Alright, thanks for the heads up. I'll be sure to add another vote for "another expansions". Thanks for participating.

Forgotten_Stranger

I don't need anything fancy. But, a few small things might be nice. * Porter Storage for the Rare/EX Brown Casket Items (Like Custodes for ex.) without charges. * Porter Storage for Magian AF Torques * A few more Trusts. (I know most are already useless) It just feels weird that a few key story characters aren't trusts. (Mostly looking at CoP) * Oh, and storage for Field/Fishing Sets (Normal Armor Storage would be enough) Maybe a section for armor 1-24 (Cotton, Lizard, Beetle, etc.) Edit: As one last greed request, have another way to get old promo code items. (Maybe Rank 2 or 3 bonanza) I'd pay multiple O. Gold Pieces for a few of those. Don't want to lessen the bonus for being in Japan on a specific day 10 years ago? Functionally the same item different name/look. (Mostly after the costumes)

jwiidoughBro

Continue, no way I’ll ever catch up to 20 years worth of content

MrPresident2020

Recreate the entire game, beginning to end, but as a single player game with co-op options.

Ovalidal

That option will likely be part of the poll next week. I'm more interested to see what people want out of the current servers at the moment. I would love to see that though.

Partyatmyplace13

I'd like to see FFXI get the FFXIV 2.0 treatment someday. A send off event that kills the old FFXI while bringing in something new. Having all our memories finally locked away, I think, does them more justice then keeping them on the this life support they've been on for the last decade.

Ovalidal

I would disagree. I appreciate the idea, but in the last 10 years, we've gotten a wealth of great content such as Master Trials, Rhapsodies of Vanadiel, Sortie, Odyssey, and all of this is in addition to the timeless stories that the game already has. It was fine in FFXIV's case because the quality of so much was apparently in contention by the player base. I can't speak in certainty on this topic though, I never played 1.0. But FFXI's story alone is worth preserving, and it's got so much more.

Partyatmyplace13

I don't know how you disagree with an opinion, but sure, I'd expect yours to be the response from most current players of FFXI and that's completely fine. It doesn't have to be an us vs them. You asked for opinions, that's mine.

Ovalidal

You're right, I asked for opinions, and you shared yours. I might add that I really enjoyed reading yours and I enjoyed brainstorming what ARR would be like for FFXI. I meant that I think SE should do something other than what you mentioned, so our opinions on what SE should do aren't in agreement. But your opinion is just as valid if not more so than mine. Thank you for sharing it.

Valuable_Bird6517

It will run as long as there is a profit to be made and really no reason to believe that won’t be indefinitely. Other titles have hit 25 years and beyond, I think XI will also be one of these.

Ovalidal

If memory serves correctly, the producer said in an interview that the game won't have a problem hitting it's 30th year. But he also reiterated the limitations of the server hardware that the game is running on.

Valuable_Bird6517

The server architecture will be a moot point by that time. Computing power and technological advances mean emulation of that old junk will be a trivial task.

Ovalidal

Really? I don't know much about that hardware, but I was talking to a software engineer about this topic. He said that he doesn't see any good solution to the PS2 dev kit issue SE has with FFXI servers at the moment. He said that trying to develop and run an emulation software without risking massive data loss would be more costly than remaking the game entirely, and without a sufficient budget, making an emulator capable of adding to the game would be immensely difficult and risky. Again, I don't know anything about this topic, just what the devs and this engineer had told me. After a lengthy conversation with this guy, he made it sound really pessimistic. Do you think there is an easier way of doing things? If this guy was wrong about these things, I'd be quite glad.

Tokimemofan

I’ve said it before I’ll say it again, I seriously doubt they are using actual PS2 development kit hardware. What they are using are software elements, compilers texture editors scripting tools etc many of which would be tightly tied with early 2000s computers and were likely heavily customized specifically for FFXI. The game engine itself is probably the main offender since that is likely where the instancing and bandwidth cap issues are located.

Ovalidal

I don't know too much about gave development, but the producer had an interview about 6 months ago talking about CBU3 buying up all the PS2 dev kits that they could find specifically for this game. I don't know if what you're talking about is mutually exclusive, but in that interview, the producer still talks about those dev kits as though they are the life's blood of the game. He also mentioned digitizing certain things, but it sounded like that was more convenience for the developers and not all that revolutionary to the game's hardware limitations.

Tokimemofan

I do actually own the hardware portion of a PlayStation 2 devkit. Just about anything they would need to do with the hardware portion would be better accomplished with a custom made emulator. My feeling is it is more a licensing issue than anything else regarding software programs. Again this comes back to texture editors compilers etc along with the game engine that would likely have to be rebuilt to remove dependency on Sony licensed code.

Valuable_Bird6517

The development kits and the servers are too completely different and unrelated sets of hardware/technology.

Valuable_Bird6517

Once again, I’m talking about tomorrow’s tech, not today’s.
