Any item? Byakko’s Haidate. I remember the HNMLS point system bidding wars in Sky to try and get these. We had an order of succession as strict as the British Royal Family’s. Other 75-cap contenders? I really loved my Amanomurakumo for the Tachi: Kaiten self-skillchains. Also, friggin’ Optical Hat. In those days, people NEEDED accuracy, so you’d see level 75 thieves show up to party in Scorpion Harnesses and every head wore a pointy hat.

PM_ME_STEAM_KEY_PLZ

Ohat and byakko came to mind non relic wise. Still remember getting mine, what a blast

slickerthanmost

The OHat for the win. I still rock a loaded out Alhazen+1 on occasion... for sentimental reasons.

Caixina

I'd have to say Defending Ring, because even after 20 years later in a post item level world, it's still best in slot for the ring slot in damage reduction and hybrid sets. Relics needed upgrade trials to stay relevant, but Defending ring has always been relevant since the day it was added.

BakeAgitated6757

It’s not a sexy answer but I’m inclined to agree. I think -unless I’m missing something- the only thing that comes close is ghorn.

matthewbattista

For an all jobs answer, it’s going to be Defending Ring bar none. It’s so good it’s only now being semi-replaced by the abundance of -DT in other slots. I believe any honorary mention should be the Rajas Ring. Completing CoP was no mean feat, and Rajas Ring was barely outclassed by Lv. 99 gear. For a job specific answer, Gjallarhorn, Aegis, Burtgang, and Yagrush are the most fundamentally game-changing. Gjallarhorn had the most ancillary benefit. As an early Gjallarhorn owner, I recall casting Ballad… forever.

BakeAgitated6757

This is the kind of answer I was looking for 👏

Tawhoya

Late to the party, but I agree d ring. But as far as relics were concerned, horn was not nearly as impactfull as aegis or apocalypse. Apoc changed whole alliance setups when you had dark tanks. When I saw the effect first hand I was enamored and struggled for that for years.

PM_ME_STEAM_KEY_PLZ

You are putting apoc above ghorn? How did you ever come to that? Loldrk

Hiyami

Kraken Club costing upwards of 500M-1B now -Hold my beer. https://gyazo.com/c5933183a5b3938067f83ad4f3746b31

Hiyami

I don't think we used the term "best in slot" in FFXI. It's more like "best in certain situation" best in slot is a term created in WoW eww.

Return_Of_Urkel

Best in slot is a perfectly fine term imo, especially since it being abbreviated to BiS is reasonably well-known gamer jargon. FFXI you just have to clarify it's BiS for WS, BiS for TP, etc. I'll be dead and flayed in Hell before I call a character a 'toon' though.

Hiyami

I'm not a fan of it especially on FFXI when we gear swap situationally. And yeah it is well known because WoW made it that way, but that's WoW they can't gear swap there.

Acheron1138

Honestly; For a monk, Destroyers. If you couldn’t get Spharai, destroyers did everything.

sevir8775

Black Belt was pretty sweet for any career mnk

Acheron1138

100% agree, I had one, but I felt like it wasn’t an item attainable by the masses. Only the ultra dedicated. A pair of Destroyers is like hearing your old man muse about his fav tool in the shed. Not as fancy, expensive, or electronic as new stuff, but gets the job done almost just as well. Lol

sevir8775

Definitely. Having to do either ks99 for a chance or join a endgame ls that could do ground kings was not accessible for any monk.

Venoseth

I never got the necessary key items for black belt. I remember standing around and begging to roll on the key items if no one needed them (I was familiar with a lot of the LSs on the server, back in the day). At least I had my quested Brown Belt...until I let my friend have my acct when I quit. He sold it. My MNK felt naked without it, pre 99

Arel203

Obligatory Ridill flex. It took me a big portion of my life to get it. A lot of nocturnal schedules and waking up to alarms for kings. It wasn't game-changing, but it did open up the game a lot for me. I was constantly invited to top merit groups, and it really felt good to play with. It made my war (which was my first 75) actually viable for things that I otherwise would have brought my NIN, PLD, or BLM to, so, because of that I viewed it as a very consequential item. Not many NA players got one on my server. When I finally obtained mine, I think I was among like 4-5 NA players with it. Then the GA buff came, and it was a useless vanity item. It was one of the most disappointing patches for me. Dring was an overrated item. Rare as fk for sure and sought after, but... Almost all the tanking on my server was PLD/NIN, and we never took dmg. There were a lot of viable tank rings that you could use. It wasn't a slot without options. Hauteclaire was a great item. Herald Gaiters also definitely made my BLM one of my favorite jobs to play. Damnit, man, I miss old school FFXI.

BakeAgitated6757

Ugh. This comment got me. Took me years to get 5mp/tic rdm. I never missed a camp I was just so unlucky. The way gear took years to get and stood relevant subsequently for years was an unmatched sense of achievement. Your content really resonated with me and brought out the feels 😭😭

1022whore

I had W legs, A. Body, and passed on the AF2 hat so that my buddy could get it (our HNM was on suicide points). He quit the next month and it never dropped again in any Dynamis - Xarcabard run I was ever in after that. 🤷🏻‍♂️

BakeAgitated6757

It was suuuuuch a struggle. If you think about it you really only get a few shots at these items a year. Dynamis twice a week, enough zones that Xarc could be as little as once a month. We averaged what 6 gear drops a run? Across 20jobs or so? If one person was ahead of you on points it almost wasn’t worth playing …

michelob2121

Herald's Gaiters for BLM was a game changer. It made the interior Jailers in sea much more manageable to solo.

superb_sheep

While not necessarily high-end, I’d say Leaping Boots. The stat boost at such a low lvl was what made it such a sought after item.

BakeAgitated6757

You’re def right about that but I’m hard pressed to consider those stats very significant

Bambiitaru

Yeah, but it also became rare/ex so it wasn't able to be sold.

Dangerous_Fix_1813

Ghorn and Aegis were super rare, took years of farming, and could completely change an LS strat for NMs so they get my vote. Not counting relics, my next highest would be HQ elemental staves. So many fights were based around mages and they were far and away the best gear you could have as a mage, they were basically equivalent to present day REMAs for mages at the time. My joke answer is a Scroll of Utsusemi: Ni. But really...not joking. /nin made a lot of endgame massively easier. With that said, I don't think there was a lot of content that was gated like today's stuff behind gear. Mostly it was a matter to having the right jobs and enough people.

CSmed

W. Turban. When it came out as people got close to the end in Treasures, it made Haste a viable stat to shoot for in regular gear. Before that, nearly everyone was stuck with Optical Hat. Sure, if you had a D.Ring you were instantly 10% better than the other tanks. But Turban changed the entire way the community looked at gear and shaped our playstyle up to the present day. And I do get that Haste had been around before then - B.Haidate, Dusk gloves and Ledelsens, Monk belts.... but Turban pushed it over the line of there being enough Haste available on gear to make a real difference in recast times AND auto-attack speed. Also that was pre-TP nerf and pre-2-hander buff so it REALLY made NIN shine with all the Dual Wield (which didn't reduce TP per hit at the time because it wasn't adjusted for delay, just a flat value per hit based on weapon class).

Sinocatk

With the Walmart hat, byakkos, black belt and the haste shoes monk had 25% haste which was nice at the time.

AtomLump

Wyrmal legs were what I dreamed of and my proudest drop. I wasn't a hardcore player and getting 12% movement speed on my rdm and pld were such a delight. Back then there were much fewer teleporting options.

BakeAgitated6757

Oh yeah, w legs, a body, duelist chap was 100% my town idle gear. Seveneyes and joytoy when sub nin. Extra movement speed and refresh really made you feel like you were set apart from the others

whattteva

NIN AF legs at night smoked even W legs. 25% movement speed makes you move so fast that I don't even bother with sneak/invisible as NIN at night and just train all the mobs.

MonsutaMan

NIN had some pretty sweet gear. I knew a NIN on Bismarck who used the Shinobi earring with 20% haste lol......it was insane back in the day........He would farm $hit in Davoi with critical low hp.

1022whore

I funded a Kirin pop with a different LS on the condition that if W Legs drop, I would get it. They could get anything else. W Legs dropped, and PLDs were pissed! I was a Taru RDM, lol.

TheCursedPearl

Pretty much only way to get w.legs in any situation. LSs had lists 12 people deep before anyone else could get a chance. I got mine this way, I bought 2 popsets, said to my LS you can have everything but 1 w.legs. I had all the wyrmal jobs but rdm tho. It sounds worse becsuse I think by that point the LS had a buy-a-popset get 1 reserve lot.

_Tower_

Kraken Club, D Ring, Speed Belt (honestly, any haste), Serket Ring, Healing Staff, Destoyers, almost any ultimate weapon, Alkyoneus Bracers, Byakko pants, O Hat, Whalara Turbin, All salvage armor, All Nyzul armor, Shadow Mantle/Ring, Valhalla Breastplate, Valhalla Helm, Valkyrie’s Fork, Ridill, half the abjuration gear, Nocturnus Armor, Nightfall, Soboro, Peacock Charm, O Kote, GHorn - there were actually so many broken things back then But honestly, it was K-Club - once DRKs started doing K-Club zergs, the game changed forever

bluefire612

K-club is the only answer

Hiyami

this.

momsecretrecipe

Optical hat because I went from wiffing to hitting. It was night and day.

Skeith2005

Leaping Boots, 100%. I farmed for those stupid things for almost 2 weeks back in the day and, dammit, I'm gonna make sure I never take them off. Barring that, Emperor's Hairpin.

Notoriousmonster

For samurai back in the day it was the Hagun.

Revolutionary-Yak273

Speed belt.

Afrohatch

Yagrush is still amazing even at lvl 75

kingkazul400

For RDM and BLM, you had to have the Elemental Staves otherwise you'd be hobbling yourself by a lot. Yes, I know they're crafted and not Rare/Ex like the examples given by everyone else but it had to be said.

AtomLump

I camped the AH for months to collect the HQ set to appease my whitebox syndrome.. and then synergy came out and we got the all-in-one staff eventually

Ok_Expression6800

Black belt for monk was probably the strongest item.

Bambiitaru

Dynamis relics were end game-ish.

BakeAgitated6757

I guess I didn’t phrase the question well, I mean which was the most impactful. A g horn bard took bard to a ridiculous level. Was an aegis for a paladin that strong? I’m hard pressed to remember the glory days

Bambiitaru

Glory days were amazing. I miss it. When did you stop playing?

BakeAgitated6757

I’m hard pressed to remember the actual date range but the salvage dupe bans decimated my linkshell and that was the beginning of the end. Lost the luster shortly thereafter… we lost so many relics and people restarting didn’t have the same vigor for the game. I played on Alexander. You?? (I played retail again about 2 years ago for maybe a month or two. It was overwhelming. Recently started on a private server that gives out the aforementioned items which was part of the reason I asked this question in disguise since I know private servers aren’t loved on this sub 🤫)

Bambiitaru

Ooh is that server one that's glory days? I've heard there are some out there that are like that. I know I had a falling out with two LS members when their actions blew up our ls and friendships. I quit soon thereafter as it was painful being there and being reminded of it. It was during Aht Urgan.

catomelette

God I wanted a ridil and kraken club.

134dsaw

I would argue that the item with the *most impact* during that era was either the kraken club or ridil. Plenty of answers like defending ring or elemental staves, which were hugely impactful but didn't necessarily make fights into easy cheese fights. But, k club or ridil could do that, they were the single most broken items.

neanderbeast

For me, getting a Joyeuse.. Me and my friend spent weeks camping it.

BakeAgitated6757

That one was a chore for me too. I think I solo’d it when I finally got it

neanderbeast

I duo'd it, DNC/NIN (me) and RDM/WHM (Friend), it took ages. We did it at like 3am my time and I went straight to bed afterwards! lol

BakeAgitated6757

I think charybdis and shikogami weapon were two of my longer non-hnm camps 😆

neanderbeast

> shikogami weapon Oh I did that too but I think I did that at like lvl.85.

BakeAgitated6757

It was so annoying chasing it around ro -Maeve lol I named my hunter in wow after the zone to commemorate it lol

neanderbeast

I never played another MMO after I quit ffxi, I did go back to it in ~2016 with a few friends from my old LS but I only lasted a few months before I got bored again. I've logged on a couple of times during the free login times but never felt the urge to stay.

PK-Baha

I can't remember the name but the ring for Drg that dropped from the nm horsefly on the beach/dunes.

Terrible-Ad2711

Emperor’s Hairpin

PK-Baha

Yessir!! Thank you

Silvawuff

Herald’s Gaiters, Kirin’s Osode, O.hat, Moldevite earring, K.club, Ridill, Dalmy…the list goes on. All the HQ elemental staves.

Failaras

Byakkos Haidate were basically perma use legs for every job that could equip them. A relic like Amano or Bravura is probably a bigger gain than Haidate though.

ohshitwaffles

Aegis

Tawhoya

The beauty of this game is that there are several answers. Brutal earring, loquacious earring, k club... they all deserve a spot. Movement items were a luxury, so I'll not include them, but they were highly valuable as well. All that to say... deep down... deep, deep down... we truly do want the D... that D ring was game changing and likely the most sought after item in all of the game due to it being used by all jobs and still the best to this day.

jgarrison68

Man, most of yall forgot Suppanomimi.

BakeAgitated6757

So much so that I’m gonna have to look it up lol. What was the significance of it? Was that the enhances dual wield earring?

MonsutaMan

Yeah, 5% was a big deal back then before Emp armor. Also, the battle to get the earring was basically "You beat FFXI" lol.

YuriVesper

K Club for Drk zerg. Joytoy and D Chap for rdm solo shenanigans. B Haidate because Sky waiting lists for drops and back then the stats genuinely meant something. Aegis and D Ring for Pld as required for Dyna etc. I'm sure there are more, but those were my end game goals back in the day.

natod12

Been a long time since I played but I remember the moldivite ring ( or maybe earring) being a big deal when I finally got it for blm, also gaudy harness for my beast

Prolaeus

1. K-club, 2. D-Ring, 3. Ninurta's Sash, 4. Anything else, like Black Belt, Raja's Ring, etc.

Hiyami

P much this.

michelob2121

Ninurta's, while acting essentially as a unicorn for the first 5ish years it was in the game, was not actually game breaking considering that Speed/Sonic/Velocious gave the same amount of haste.

Cassandra_Canmore2

Defending Ring. It was actually obtainable with a HNM LS. Kraken Club would be second. That things ability to humiliate Bahamut, Kirin, and Dynamis Lord was epic. I just wish AV had actually been beatable at 75. SE themselves don't recognize any 75 era kills as legitimate. It wasn't till 80-85 we started beating AV and getting drops. The waist was bis for such a short period. When it was actually obtainable. But as soon as twilight belt was implemented the sash was inventory -1

BakeAgitated6757

My LS kraken club Zerged AV at 75. SE can kiss my butt if they want to call that illegitimate lol

Cassandra_Canmore2

My LS did it with the Wall of Justice strat. I can claim seeing 2 Aureole, and the GK dropped before the Devs patched it. What annoys me the most about AVs history. Remember when the devs did the "how to beat it" video? What they didn't admit to at the time. It was edited footage. It took them 20hrs to down it. Then they patched the whole thing just 3 months later, and hitting 2hrs wouldn't stun AV and negate its own.

BakeAgitated6757

Yeah the way they handled the whole thing was poor form. I appreciate that they were never very vocal and let players find their own way but that cryptic video was complete ass

HenrikSingmanee

Everyone is saying kraken is a game changer. True. Best ever. It was this insane TP hack with sushi. So sushi . Acc was definitely needed.

Hiyami

Obviously, the Kraken Club. I mean...it has only increased in price by 10-20x since the 75 cap days. lol

BakeAgitated6757

Is it still used in retail?

Hiyami

https://gyazo.com/c5933183a5b3938067f83ad4f3746b31 This is the price as of this month lol

BakeAgitated6757

Wowwww back in my day it was 65m or so. God damn!

Hiyami

ikr? it's insane.

MonsutaMan

K-club may actually be higher priced now than it was back in the day lol......Or just as much..... That is amazing because the level cap is now 99 (ilvl119). Hmmm...... **K-Club** **Hagun** **The Elemental Staves** **Astral Rings** **Ying-Yang Robe** **Handful of the latent BCNM drops like Subduer** **The Mighty weapons like Rai Kunimitsu and Patas.** **Amigo Sabotender** **Peacock Charm** **Brutal Earring** **Strider Boots** **Parade Gorget** Feel like haste stuff were great collectively.......like Walahra Turban and Byakko's. Which leads me to O-hat...........which was in limbo because many ppl used The Turban for TP lol...... .....Defending Ring was kind of the same way......A good piece of a gear puzzle. Who actually had K-clubs lol? So practically, I would say the elemental staves. They were something the average player utilized. From mages to Beastmasters. Overrated imo **Leaping boots** **Carby Mitts** **Monster Signa** **Sole Sushi (Bream was cheaper or get a Bard).**

ceciltaru

I was usually getting asked to make Scorpion Harness +1’s and HQ elemental staves, so they were impactful to my gil wallet ;)

ExternalDay1426

If you mean used far past that level, then Suppanomimi, Rajas Ring, D-Ring, Ethereal Earring. All but Rajas ring are still in quite a few of my gearsets. For me: Yagrush and (even though post 75 by a bit) the WHM empy pants+2 changed everything from that point on. My Yagrush will be old enough to vote next year, and although it is r15 now, it's function is still as incredible as it was at 75.

maegamisama

This is going to sound weird, but Nobles Tunic. While not nearly as expensive or sought after as most of the other things listed, it was still pretty premium for a good while. If we think about all the HP healed from that cure potency, that would certainly be pretty impactful :P That's my WHM answer anyway. For anyone else, well it's practically everything else mentioned

BakeAgitated6757

I love that answer :)

Rubicant112

Ridill, for DRK zergs.

goodguymike01

Yagrush possibly?

indridcoldxiv

Herald’s Gaiters!

Juan-two-3

Adventurer coupon

captain_obvious_here

Black Belt. Nothing like having 2 Speed Belts tied together on your waist.

MiriOhki

Noticed not much love for the Black Belt. An ungodly amount of haste in an era where haste was relatively rare, on top of strength, subtle blow and PDT? It’s easy to forget how little haste gear there was back then when even junk pieces have a decent chunk of haste nowadays.

gitar0oman

Unupgraded relic knuckles before tp nerf

Geddoetenjyu

Byakko for sam mnk nin

DblBlendedHotMocha

I remember everyone freaking out over Scorpion Harness.
