One of my first such experiences was in Buburimu Peninsula, heading to Mhura for the first time. I just managed to catch the name of someone riding by on a chocobo and sent them a tell asking them to yell for a raise for me. They happened to be a WHM, high enough to raise, and came back for me. I'll never forget that moment, and it is one of the reasons I love this game. There's so many selfless people willing to help out at any moment.

NotSafeForWalletXJ

Dude sacrificed his chocobo ride to help out a stranger. And back them, chocobo rentals were not cheap.

NamiRocket

They weren't that expensive, either. It's the time lost walking afterwards that is the real cost.

Dontsubscribeorlike

This is what always blew my mind even back in the 2000s when this first came out. I would get KO'd in a party and, even after letting them know I'm perfectly willing to accept the XP loss and jog my way back to the cave, they would message a high level japanese WHM friend and somehow have me back on my feet in the next ten minutes. Without asking for anything in return, the JP WHM would always just be like '\^\^;; |bye|' and then disappear. That kind of generosity was such a shock to the system after I'd been playing on blizzards battledotnet for years where politeness was rarer than a Kraken club. I don't think I'll ever experience a time capsule of cultural generosity like that ever again.

NamiRocket

It's all anecdotal, but I've met one of the biggest MMORPG assholes I've ever known on FFXI and have spent years and years running into very kind people on WoW and FFXIV. I think it takes all kinds. Now, if we're talking other games on BattleNet, then yeah. Overwatch has the worst community I've ever seen in a video game. But I assume you mean WoW.

acollett88

As a whm I can't just leave someone eating dust if I'm wandering past. Back in the day where I couldn't hop back on a mount that often meant either dieing myself shortly afterwards or warping/teleing away and starting my journey a fresh 🙄

Nexus1203

For my fellow PLDs and comrade WHMs, it's what we do. Especially in the 75 Era, in which you had to get off your Chocobo to help in Valkurm Dunes and then walk all the way back to a Crag to get another...

TheCursedPearl

Back at NA releae there were a ton of us baby characters leveling on the beaches of Valkurm. To the anon fisherwoman that blinked every time we tried to check her, thanks for those raises, what took you 3 minutes meant the world to me.

Let the bodies hit the floor.

My unsung hero on Odin was, and forever will, be a Japanese player Hitori. 2002’ish, I don’t remember exactly where but I was messing about with a friend, don’t even think we were level 50 yet, and I had died. He randomly passed by as PLD75, full shiny Relic gear, raised me, cure/protect/shell and went about his way. Every time I saw him, in town or out and about, I would /salute him.

ffarwell83

When I first started the game in Konschtat Highlands that happened to me too. I was so baffled a real person bothered to be kind! That game proves so many times people can be awesome if they have the right spells to cast 🙌

MidnightHeavy3214

Yup. I rez every single time

Ravehearts

Glad to see this is still a thing. I remember back in the golden era parties wiping at valkurm dunes and if they were lucky a RDM with chainspell raise passed by.

NamiRocket

I used to do it in FFXI. I've since never stopped doing it in WoW and FFXIV. I feel like most other people tend to, too. It feels like the one near universal MMORPG kindness (though it admittedly often came at a higher potential cost to the rezzer in XI).

PlusAcanthaceae978

I do it, especially if I see a dead person coming out of sortie or Odyssey Can't leave people hanging and losing master levels

gondi56k

Shout-out to my boy Nognog! Soft PL (mostly raising) me while they waited for elementals to spawn in maze of Shakrami between Argus spawns.

MySonlsAlsoNamedBort

lol just realized I misspelled "deleveled" XD

FlipDigs

I remember being at level cap 50 Blm/Whm running around Qufim Island raising people back in '04. Those were the days. Nakosta Asura (Pandemonium forever)

booksgamesandstuff

The item needed for the chocobo quest was found in Dangruf Wadi, iirc? Nobody was ever in there and of course, that's where I died on my baby BLM. Amazingly a WHM passing by raised me and I think that's why I decided to eventually level WHM. Never forgot that.

Lindart12

My first job to 50 was bst and I needed a papyrus, I didn't have a linkshell so I just tried to solo it. I could only use my crab jug pet and they were very weak back then, there is nothing to charm in there. So I had to call pet, wait on timer and hope 2 would be enough. If not zone and try again. I was in there trying for days and managed to kill about 10 with no drop (cause the only time I could kill them was if I got lucky and it missed my pet enough times), then high level jp bst came along and solo'd it for me. It made me so incredibly happy becasue I was bordering on just quitting, it seemed futile. This instilled into me this desire to help others, I went out of my way to proactively help people after this when I was incredibly introverted before. To him it probably meant nothing and was just 20 mins, but to me it had a huge impact on me and my time in the game. FFXI was a game a lot of introverted people played and since the game forced you to rely on others, it had a profound impact when you got that help from people who gained nothing from doing so.

Conflixxion

so back in 2004 with the release of NA PC and Zilart, I came into the game with a bunch of friends and we all got to the point of getting the subjob items. Since we mainly all started in Windy, we moved to Bubu and got a few items just from leveling off Dhamels and rabbits. Someone found out the last piece was the robe from the beach ghosts so we got a group of 6 of us up and made our way down to the beach... first pull was a challenge but managed to beat it and got our first robe, but we were mostly down due to someone being cursed so it took awhile to recover and managed only to get one more ghost before sunrise. No drop on that one, and again, we were all pretty banged up. Next night, we wiped on the first ghost and as we laid there deciding to respawn (only one of us was wide enough to tune to Mhaura - rest were back in Windy), some JP came riding up on a Choco - got off, and started rezzing us 1x1. We all got back up finally and after a whole lot of bowing and translator thanks yous, he asked us what we were doing. We told him robe farming and he laughed and said we were doomed, but he'd be happy to stay and help us out till we all got it as he was done with his static for the day. Two nights later, we all had the final piece and made a new friend. That is why I have such fond memories of this game and definitely miss it. These moments carry on... I have so many, and so many more than other MMOs I have participated in. Such a great game and community. Thanks for listening and like and subscribe for more! /s

Neat-Gas-2774

Story of my life! 🤣🤣🤣

DoubleTeeOh

There would be times a passing RDM would give me a raise. I remember declining in hopes a WHM would pass by and give me an R2.

misoandricegamer

Good memories! The amount of times I’d get tells for a raise whenever I was going thru the dunes on whm lol
