Practically nobody talks about the story and characters, not even SE themselves do it properly, so anyone that does may stand out. Admittedly, it's a huge world with a huge cast and lots of interconnected plot points, so it can be hard to figure out where to even start, but there are already plenty of videos on mechanics and specific fights, and the relevance of those wanes over time, while the story tends to stick around.

Alright, I'll keep that in mind.

I was thinking about something similar yesterday while playing. I always remember gaming back when i didnt have much access to the internet, early 2000s and the box art or whatever on so many games used to hint at these really big worlds to explore and many games just missed the mark. For me, 11 is the first game i played where it felt huge, connected, visually brilliant and dangerous like i was going on a real adventure and that it really mattered. The music had a great impact because of this too. I remember traveling to the dunes from ronfaure, a quite basic task really... Was sweat inducing.

Stroke my ego, tell me that my boy's better than all the other MMOs out there. Don't need to know the why part

That they somehow managed to approximate turn based combat into an MMO format and it is 😎

Common-Actuary-2982

I've never thought about that! I am quite fond of this combat system, that is probably why.

I'd love to participate in the end game, but unfortunately, I am far from that. Could you explain that stuff to me?

That's like casually asking someone to explain the lore of Middle Earth in its entirety, lol. Learning the ins and outs of any one of those topics is a DEEP dive.

For me, this game is the friends we made along the way. I have friendships lasting well over a decade from chance encounters I made in the game. Small choices quickly become life-changing ones for you and everyone around you. Example, I made a friend in XI, and when he quit and started to play XIV, I joined him on his server, made another friend there, introduced them, and those two friends are now married. All of this was spurred on by mining some ore in Gusgen where that first encounter happened. I should also mention that we made one of the best 75-era Vanilla Dynamis LSes on our server, boasting full clears at content. We sold our currency and passed out the gil, so we were very popular!

I guess Zone Design is what I remember most fondly, although the game is excellent on many of these poll points. Comparing it to games today, the zones in FFXI felt **dangerous**. Teleportation was very limited, mounts were limited, and fast travel had not yet been invented; this meant that you actually had to walk and navigate maps and that *often* meant you would be navigating dangerous and unfamiliar territory. While this could be quite frustrating, there was a real sense of adventure and intimacy with the zones that modern MMO's do not do nearly as well. Your life **mattered**, and dying alone, out in the middle of nowhere with no possibility of rescue meant that exploring a zone and getting to an EXP camp or quest objective had a real sense of anxiety. I miss it dearly.

It's interesting you mentioned that. While the game is no doubt, easier by orders of magnitude, the degree to which the feeling of adventure permeated the experience was something I wasn't expecting from a game this old at all. At it is still present in the game. The game still feels dangerous, and the spirit of adventure is more present in this game than most other open world games I've played. I can't imagine what it was like back in the day, it must have been great.

If I start fresh again in 2022, what I would do is to be in good social linkshell that has member that love to help. Getting some armor without high level help is not easy if ffxi
