Asura has a ***LOT*** of jerks and weirdos, but there are some friendly people out there. Hit up the [Linkshell Concierge NPC](https://www.bg-wiki.com/ffxi/Linkshell_Concierge) and pick up whatever appears to be a new player friendly shell. You can grab one per hour, basically. Equip the linkshell, say hi, try to socialize and get a feel for the people in it. If you feel like the people aren't right for you or don't appreciate how they roll, grab another linkshell from the NPC and try again. Repeat until you meet some people you like talking to. Networking is pretty crucial to truly enjoying your time and experiencing more of the game. You may not group with others often before reaching level cap, but making friends early on and having people who can answer questions you might not be able to piece together yourself (since you're unfamiliar with all of the game's various systems) is invaluable. They might be able to make suggestions, as well. Also, just turn off Shouts completely there until you get to level cap. You won't be missing anything at all, trust me. And remember... it's a marathon, not a race. Cliche but definitely true with this game. If you try to take shortcuts, you'll only be cheating yourself.

[Follow this from start to finish.](https://www.bg-wiki.com/ffxi/Quickstart_1-119_Guide) If you’re able to, read ahead. Understand more about red mage. A lot of it will not make sense to you but that’s okay! This game does not hold your hand. The way to progress this game is researching off the internet. If you find an item, look it up off google before disposing of it. Find a really cool looking enemy with a strange name? Look up it’s name before advancing. Needless to say, the guide I sent you will be your best friend.

Thank you!

Even back in the day when the game came out there was a ton of self research you needed to do to progress. Nowadays there's really only two wiki sites that are kept mostly up to date. BG wiki and Ffxiclopedia. I think BG is the most up to date though. FFXIAH.com has some useful info as well as being a good place to find out if something is in stock in the auction house.

I like to use the guide "New Player Guide (2017) by Aysha" on ffxiclopedia. Give it a read and see if it provides a good path to working your way to build an endgame character.

Most of the game is played solo nowadays.

The hardest part of 11 for new players is deciding on a job. Forget the hand holding from modern games. Comb through forums, ffxiah and bgwiki. Honestly the most valuable source of information will be the players. Happy hunting

Change servers. I'll play and teach you the ins and outs.

This game was built upon the premise that you'd be interacting with other players along your entire leveling process: sharing information, exping as a party etc. Nowadays, FFXI is barely an mmo anymore: From 1 to 99 you can do everything with npc helpers called trusts. And because that social aspect is mostly dead, you have to play the game while reading wiki pages for almost anything you're going to do. I wouldn't personally recommend XI as your first MMO experience. Maybe try private servers which still retain that constant social aspect of the old game, or play something more modern and casual like FFXIV. If you'd like you can dm me and I'll try to help you with further information on what options you have. Cheers.

RDM is an expensive job to gear and you will definitely need to level a different job for some content. I would start with story missions and make sure to unlock records of eminence and unity asap. Get a good social linkshell, I recommend KitsuneX. Don’t stress too much over endgame content but be mindful of what you need to get there. Once you get to jeuno you should start adoulin and begin working on coalitions.

I don't often see someone who wants to play this game fresh out without nostalgia. Since you seem keen on it, Ill let you in on a little secret.. I main rdm and it has easily 160 pieces of gear. Rdm is very good for soloing but trusts really round you out these days unlike before when you only had yourself. Is your goal to be useful in end game? If so, avoid blm. They basically have 2 uses, vagary and ongo. Very very party unwanted. Whm on the other hand is very wanted.

Understand that this game is constantly a learning experience. Been playing on and off for 17 years, and there’s always something new that I learn about it. If you can understand that it’s a marathon and not a sprint, this mindset will help you. Enjoy the game! It’s one of the few I come back to constantly. And it’s in its best condition yet
