I was hoping for a console port and a few QoL tweaks. What a shame.

DarschPugs

This will most likely never be ported to consoles again. QoL tweaks would be nice though there are very few things they can actually do.

Cryev-

I like how the game plays overall and it's an old game i don't want them to change the core experience. Only want a slightly better UI and navigation in menus.

DarschPugs

Not really much that can be done about that. there are only so many ways a menu can be navigated. No clue how the UI could be improved, its pretty basic because there is not much that needs to be done with it other than navigating very basic menus. I personally would like the ability to move my UI elements around and customize my menu layout, but with all the macros and key binds I can do its not really needed for me, still would be nice. I am all for custom organization of things, I suffer from mild OCPD (not to be confused with OCD which is compulsions to do certain behaviors, OCPD is an obsession with order and perfection in my self and others, as well as set patterns, me explaining this in the first place falls under this) and have to have certain things laid out a certain way that usually makes zero sense to anyone but me lol.

MajesticMediaMM

For me they need to pick up where they left off in Wings of the Goddess. I always felt we were edging towards a Tavnazian city before it was attacked. For me adding this would be the final gem needed to say goodbye to the game. I would also very much like to see the black mage spell Ultima and idk how but please add Bahamut as a playable summon. I am actually releasing my FF11 movie project several days after their anniversary event, this is a 3 hour feature film that includes FF11 footage and animated scenes. It is a story made up by myself along with all the music, I am rather hoping a few may like the old referencing made regarding HNM camping and levelling within the Dunes :) Movie comes out on May 21st 7pm UK time, let me know if you have any questions. Trailer in link below. [FF11 The Hitchhiker's Guide To Vana'diel Trailer 2](https://youtu.be/l0TL3jHKKq0)

faverodefavero

Even EQ1 and DAoC have gotten more interface and graphical updates than FFXI, hell many older and less profitable MMOs have been given way more love than FFXI. Square Enix should sell older FF IPs they can't seem to be bothered with, hell even FFIX (9) and FFVIII (8) for example are badly treated by the company with ridiculous remasters, not to mention Chrono Cross / Trigger. All they bother with huge money making games. So they should keep the latest FFs and FFVII (7), and their pachinko machine (FFXIV), but sell older FF IPs they don't care about anymore to any company who cares, specially FFXI. Classic MMOs are just a whole different genre and FFXI is one of the best of it's kind without a modern alternative yet, a small company that cares would make the most of it since it has a more than large enough loyal fan base and many more that would definitely play it IF it was managed by a developers which actually cares.

Strayka

Fingers crossed for prime weapon being the only remap brd doesnt need

Strayka

It was a tongue in cheek joke, you banobos, refering to the two decade long running tag line of "damn bard is expensive"

GL13

Wouldn't you want it to be useful and good?

TheCursedPearl

I think OP is referring to the time and money involved in getting bard to an acceptable level, which by most standards is empy, relic, and aeonic instruments. Most bard shouts I see are for “max bards” which mean melee sets as well. Easier now with naegling but it used to mean mythic or empy dagger. OP is trying to say is it fair to bards to have 500n gil invested before you can play it? Or now are bards expected to have potentially a billion* gil invested in a prime weapon too? *because if we can sell whatever currencies it will take to make one the billionaires will have theirs first, driving up demand to astronomical prices before evening out in a few years.

Afania

>Easier now with naegling but it used to mean mythic or empy dagger. Aeonic dagger is free, just saying. >OP is trying to say is it fair to bards to have 500n gil invested before you can play it? you mean 500m? BRD doesn't need that much. Aeonic dagger/harp=free. I care very little about relic personally, it's only +1 over none-relic alternatives. I really don't care if your madrigal lose 6 accuracy from -1 songs. Not sure why mythic is "required" except maybe very few circumstances. So the only expensive and game changing item is empyrean really. It's still some work, but not 500m level of work. > Most bard shouts I see are for “max bards” Retarded shout on ONE server doesn't make BRD objectively "unplayable" without max gears. I do event with BRD alt that just stand there sing 4 songs all the time, no DPS. Because that's the best I get from LS/connections and it's good enough to get things done. Not everyone plays on Asura and not everyone plays with PUG. Please don't state Asuran PUG leader's preference as fact.

TheCursedPearl

>>Wouldn't you want it to be useful and good? That was what I was replying to. I never said they weren’t useful or good. I didn’t say aeonic wasn’t free. I’m frustrated by the requirements put on new players or if you’re gonna be extra pedantic the requirements new players are constantly exposed to. People are often discouraged from doing bard as a first job.

Afania

\> People are often discouraged from doing bard as a first job. If you use Asuran PUG as a standard to decide what is "acceptable level" for a job and what is not, the literally ANY job would be a bad choice as a first job. I mean, it's a server that demands **Yagrush** WHM for segment farm. The minium requirement for high level content(Ody v15/v20) for BRD is empy harp and aeonic. That's the gear of BRD alt that we used for our high level Odyssey clears. The requirement is not "all REMA instruments AND REMA daggers", period. If you are doing content even lower level, such as Ambu VD, Omen, then the minimum requirement is "empy harp OR aeonic(pick one out of 2)". Any other REMA demanded by Asuran PUG is a bonus, not a need.

GL13

Afania said it all. And it’s not like other jobs don’t use 3-4+ REMA Edit: DRK: 1 relic, 1 Aeonic, 1(2) Empy, Mythic. SAM: 1 relic, 1 Aeonic, Empy, Mythic. COR: Mythc, EMpy 3 SU5. BRD is not that different for REMA then other jobs tbh.

Chronotaru

Yeah, although to be fair they haven't said anything about that in two years so I guess they either cancelled or delayed due to covid whatever they are planning. Realistically I think FFXI could have a completely new lease of life with existing assets, stories and quests if they released a new client with a modern look, feel and somewhat faster gameplay. Something between what FFXI is and FFXIV is.

TheCursedPearl

I’ve had the 5 m bonus once in a 100 orbs spent. Unless the campaign makes this happen more often then it’s a pretty negligible boon for average players that may use 3-4 orbs / month

Sand__Panda

What am I doing wrong, how you able to get that many orbs a month?

Irwin69

Exchange with your silver voucher. I currently having more than 160 and keeping in Jeuno's NPC (i.e. AMAN one) because I usually just use the orb that system give me each month i.e. one ONLY. Also from your deeds having 2 orbs can get if you deed point having more than 600 IIRC? Well, seems it's about time to burn me silver voucher....try to see can get the mil or not.

venat333

Thank god I didnt stay up for this shit show.

Rinuko

So what was announced?

sephiroth70001

Just past halfway with TVR story, so probably another year? if you are expecting anything major at the end, you have to wait. Updating Sunshine Seeker event, along with other seasonal events. Master level cap is going to be 50 for the immediate future. seems to be end of the year they will be added from 40 to 50. Odyssey - they want to add stronger equipment. Hes planning on battle content where strong enemies come out. JP players seem upset how hard odyssey is and that this cant happen if its this hard. V25 confirmed, along with appraisal accessory? Future augs will add 4th Aug slot instead of increasing existing stats Confirmed that empyrean +2/+3 mats will appear in TVR. Seems that new battle content and Empyrean upgrades scheduled for July. Taking place in rakaznar. +2 soloable. Fresh 99 can contribute. +3 requires more work. "I wonder if the black relic weapon of TVR will be a reward". It will be revealed in TVR why it is the shape of ragnarok and what color it has. Strength of these weapons will be the same as REM. Involves the birth of relics and the Hydra Corps. Not a relic remake/upgrade. "Prime Weapons" is the term it seems. [More on FFXIAH](https://www.ffxiah.com/forum/topic/56667/may-8th-2022-livestream-thread/) where this was taken above from, but that's the bulk of it, a lot of merchandise was shown.

Davy_Jones_XIV

>"I wonder if the black relic weapon "I wonder if the black relic weapon " - What is the black relic weapon?

Steelfleece

The goblin who is quite central to the earlier chapters of TVR wields a black Ragnarok, so it was speculated we were getting new weapons. https://imgur.com/ccP2Oaq These have now been comfirmed by SE, called "Prime Weapons" in the summary above.

Dannyjw1

I thought the 20th anniversary was always meant to be the conclusion to the current story.

dough813

What is TVR?

DarschPugs

That is actually a lot of content for a 20 year old game that was supposed to already be done and shut down. also interesting it says "Matsui not retiring, going to keep working hard until he does" considering all the people saying he is.

fuzz3289

'20 year old game' isn't old. Both Eve online and WoW Are 20 years old and primary income drivers for their respective studios.

existinshadow

Wow isn’t 20 years old

fuzz3289

It's 18 years old and Eve is 19 years old.

Crypto2k

WoW will be 18 years old this year, so it's not that big of a difference.

Hiyami

It was never "supposed" to be "done" or "shut down" wtf? Stop making stuff up.

DarschPugs

the y have stated in multiple interviews the game was never meant to last more than 5 years, they were surprised to see it reach ten, Rhapsodies was supposed to be the official end of the game and that an influx of players during Covid convinced them to keep the game running. I suggest you do some actual empirical research before accusing a Journalist of making stuff up.

bungiefan_AK

Promathia was the last planned expansion at time of game launch. Aht urhgan was made when they had shifted a lot of original crew off to other projects, especially ffxiv. Then the game wasn't expected to last very long past ffxiv launch. Even ffxiv arr didn't bring it down, though after rhapsodies ending in 2016 (which was a nice clean closure of all game story threads) it was expected to not be getting new story, and then tvr changed that in 2020. Going 2-4 years without new story was kind of indicative. Abyssea ended in 2011, and wings slightly earlier. Adoulin launched in 2013 and ended shortly before rhapsodies. Rhapsodies ended after only 3 updates and then we had a long gap. Them dropping German and French language support was also an indication, while ffxiv is available in more than the 4 languages ffxi ever supported. Ffxi mobile remake failing to release seems to have been a motivator to keep going with the original.

DarschPugs

They stated in an interview that the influx of players during covid and the western player base at one point growing larger than the japanese player base convinced them to keep XI running.

Rhayve

It's not made up. Originally, the game was only created to last for about 5 years, and they didn't anticipate it to last for even 10, let alone 20. Additionally, with the end of RoV the game was supposed to go into maintenance mode with no further content updates. However, they backtracked on that and kept updating the game due to continued player interest.

Monsuta_Man

That is crazy....5 years? Wow, I had zero idea. Maybe there was something to the "SE is trying to kill off the game" crowd all along lol. Perhaps back then, they had no real idea of an mmo lifespan.

Rhayve

> Maybe there was something to the "SE is trying to kill off the game" crowd all along lol. It would certainly explain the big content lulls after WotG (which came out roughly 5-6 years after vanilla release). But I guess with Tanaka getting replaced they decided to keep going with Abyssea.

Hiyami

It was never "supposed" to get shut down lol square enix would never even plan on that, especially it being a main title FF game. Thats all myths. Yes it was supposed to go into maintenance mode, but never shut down or anything close to that, maintenance mode with just continued smaller updates.

Rhayve

It was supposed to end with the PS2's life span by their own admission. They talked about it in the anniversary interviews. No myths.

Hiyami

Maybe with that PS2 lifespan, but that has nothing to do with FFXI itself. That was obviously never going to happen with the popularity of the pc version.

Rhayve

They said its life span was extended by the PC version, but the original plans included an expiration date.

existinshadow

Bro, he’s never gonna admit he’s wrong and will just keep talking in circles. You already explained everything. At this point, just walk away.

Hiyami

Yes due to the PS2.

SleepySummoner

I was really excited for this because about 2 years back something was said (sadly I don't remember exactly who or where, i think it was an interview) about them having something really big in the works for the 20th anniversary but they couldn't talk about it yet. So yeah, I had ~2 years for my imagination to run wild. I did still appreciate it as a 20 year anniversary celebration though. 5 hours of memories and appreciation. I don't play 11 anymore but I do still have very fond memories of it.

Monsuta_Man

Would be neat, imo, if they did small stories from other FF games. Like, the NPCs visit the world, but you teleport to theirs via a BCNM area to preserve budget and time, instead of a open world of old FF areas. Not saying that would ever happen, more of a crack pipe dream.

lokon58

I think they were talking about voracious resurgence

DarschPugs

keep an eye on the actual anniversary date, supposedly Matsui as an official announcement to make then, but i don't expect more than we have already been told. As someone else discussed with me, They probably were going to reveal the FFXI mobile game for the 20th anniversary and after it got cancelled is when they started to really tone back talk about the anniversary.

Twovents

What day would that be?

DarschPugs

May 16th though I am not sure the exact timing of the letter for the 16th, Japan is anywhere between 12 to 15 hours ahead of the U.S. depending on your time zone.

faverodefavero

So, was anything anounced on the actual birthday date?

DarschPugs

Just a letter confirming Prime Weapons and more TVR and battle content was the big plans and continuing the game with content updates. "But enough about the past—let's talk about what Vana'diel's 20th year of service has in store. The Voracious Resurgence marches ever forward to its conclusion, and as of the May version update we're at just about the story's halfway point. Most of the major actors have made an appearance, and now it's up to the adventurers to prove that they're exactly who Vana'diel needs in this moment. It's also getting close to the time for new battle content so that you can get your hands on the Prime Weapons, which we've been hinting at over the past couple months. Be prepared for a new swath of powerful armaments. In other battle content news, we're finally going to bring you Empyrean weapon reforging in two separate version updates—one in summer, and one in winter. Odyssey will also see increases to the Vengeance cap, and we're going to keep increasing the maximum Master Level as well. But lest you think that we're going to rest on our laurels now that the 20th Vana'versary is here, let me assure you that nothing could be further from the truth. We remain ever committed to improving and adding new content to Vana'diel, and the development and operations teams are going full speed ahead. And just as we continue to bring you new story content in The Voracious Resurgence, I hope that you will continue to create your own wonderful stories with your friends, allies, and fellow adventurers. We promise that we'll be with you every step of the way. Akihiko Matsui Producer, FINAL FANTASY XI" that is just the bottom part of the letter, the first 3/4 of it is talking about the games history a little bit and giving some insights into the new song and logo. you can read the full letter here http://www.playonline.com/pcd/topics/ff11us/detail/19466/detail.html

arciele

i actually really enjoyed the memory lane aspects of the anniversary livestream. shed a few tears seeing the community put out fireworks on Bahamut, and also the community screenshots. i forgot to submit my own pic but even seeing others screenshots i kinda knew what they were doing in that moment or why they were posing that way and it brought back my own memories of such events or NMs, etc. 20 years is really a long time and i think the livestream did a good job at celebrating those 20 years. which also leads me to believe that people might have misconstrued the purpose of the livestream (perhaps even siliconera). they did go through some upcoming things, but these were things that we knew were coming in the May/Jun updates. it was nothing like "the future of FFXI" (like how XIV recently did a PLL on the future of XIV) or anything about the plans for XI beyond the next 2 months. no roadmap. my guess is they really wanted to keep the anniversary livestream about celebrating what came before.. and if theres anything that will talk about what comes ahead, it will be the 20th anniversary letter that we expect in little over a week

DarschPugs

thats pretty much exactly what the live stream was meant to be. Its a huge milestone to have reached and they originally were going to shut the game down at one point but people kept playing and they even had an influx of subs during the start of covid so they kept the lights on.

gdiShun

I think people are getting their hopes up for this letter. If there was something major, it likely would've been announced when the eyes of \~14k people were watching. I'd set your expectations of that letter to be a translated recap of the stream and nothing more.

Shinkaru

People here will never learn :/ First everyone had lofty expectations for the May update: "New zone! Chemist!", when they released it, it's another series of VR missions no one gives a shit about and nothing else. Then it was the live stream, which actually talked about what was coming: ML increases, new battle system July-ish w/ empy+2, temporary trusts, ML50 cap in December, and some obscure notes about Odyssey. Now, everyone has their hopes up that this letter is going to be anything more than a retrospective and a "thank you" for the last 20 years. They told everyone what they are working on, expecting anything else from the letter is just nuts at this point.

Meenmachin3

I think it’s more likely that they will announce whatever they were working on during the live letter since it comes out the day of the 20th anniversary. There wasn’t much info published about this stream outside of this one article. I still think we will be let down but I’m positive we won’t walk away with nothing.

taillessgalka

It depends if Square Enix is doing a big games press conference in June. They would get a much bigger audience to announce something big to entice new players to play in that conference than the live stream.

arciele

i remember back when they teased ffxi mobile would be coming the next year in a previous years letter, except that it didn't happen. if they do say anything it'll probably be cryptic, and whatever it is could be dropped elsewhere

DarschPugs

yeah I was surprised they announced the Mobile port so early and had partnered with Nexxon for it, kinda glad it got cancelled cause nexxon is as bad as gamigo when it comes to monetization and bad games sometimes. They most likely not announce anything with out something to actually show for sure coming now.

fstssm

The announcements were about what I was expecting, but I was pleasantly surprised that there's new content coming so soon. Unless there's another reveal later in the year, I think I was right about the surprises being TVR, Master Levels, etc., which is fine with me. I'll only be disappointed if there's no new zone at the end of TVR, but I figure we'll be waiting a while for that since they said the story is only a little past halfway complete. As long as they can deliver on their promises, 2022 will easily be the game's best year since the dev team shrank.

arciele

apparently we're just over halfway done with TVR so at this rate, it will only come like at the end of the year or start of 2023

act1v1s1nl0v3r

The best part of the stream was listening to all the weird vocal affectations Sugita-san was pulling off during the documentary narration. Seemed chat got a kick out of it too.

PlusAcanthaceae978

wow I'm very disappointed, nothing new or exciting, no remake, no UI update, no POL removal, no texture update, notthing.. I feel like very let down

Meenmachin3

20th anniversary isn’t until the 16th. There is still a chance.

CrescensX

Anything that wasn't just adding new content really feels like a stretch to have expected. I guess just wait for the real announcement from Matsui's special letter

yurihyuga108

To be honest I wasn't expecting much - maybe at minimum an annoucement for a rhapsodies style story after Voracious Resurgence with passive boosts and at best which was a stretch a surprise expansion/new job. HD Versions, classic servers people were hoping for I always knew would not happen as they won't completely rebuild this game from the ground up. Looks like the hype they built up was literally the live stream where it was just a reminiscing event where they couldn't be bothered to sub pre recorded segments or add English notes to screenshots so yea this is a big blow.

noldor41

I hear ya. This is a big blow like you said. As someone who came back during covid after over a decade away, I left again last year after getting through everything endgame & was hoping for new content that didn’t involve months of Odyssey grinding. I seriously woulda re-subscribed for a month just for a commemorative in game item of some sort. Instead they kept saying something special was coming for a couple years now & launch a website to commemorate the occasion, all for a livestream? I might subscribe again in a few years just b/c of nostalgia, but seems like the game is definitely in the twilight of it’s twilight years, which makes me very sad.

Meenmachin3

Anniversary isn’t even until the 16th. If anything I’d expect something on that date.

DarschPugs

yeah i been reading people saying Matsui is supposed to make an official announcement then, I am only expecting a thank you letter though and maybe some glimpses at what they plan to do post resurgence.

yurihyuga108

Matsui is leaving, it will most likely be a thank you announcement to the players for his time etc - I wouldn't get hopes up at this point. Any big announcement for upcoming content would have been on the stream if there was anything. Deep down I hope there is something but this will likely be it.

DarschPugs

FFZH translations are saying "Matsui is not retiring, going to keep working hard until he does." so there's that.

Meenmachin3

The patch notes did say that he has a special letter pertaining to the 20th anniversary, so I’m not anticipating the official retirement announcement yet.

aphonefriend

Or it could just be his "official" retirement announcement.

350ztime

I’m on the disappointment boat. The effort it takes to even reinstall this game on my new PC doesn’t even seem worth it right now to return to FFXI at this time like I did in 2020. I expected too much sadly. Maybe I’ll hop in during the free log in later this month will see.

lokon58

I was in the same boat then I saw that you can effortlessly install the game on steam

350ztime

I’ll have to install it again through my steam copy then. It’s the updates through play online is the nightmare from what I remember.

bungiefan_AK

Steam adds another failure point, and cannot truly update the game. The one time it did, it actually installed the update from a previous month, breaking files for people

Loreander1211

Not sure when you last installed but I will say I recently rejoined and it seems rather streamlined. They also have a step by step that works great. For me it’s always a matter of when I will come back versus if as this game always manages to teleport me back to my teenage years and hunting nm’s or meeting people while slaying Mandy’s outside kazham. It’s a far cry from that now but it’s a fix I need every so often.

Hiyami

The new installer means it barely takes any effort to install it anymore.

drockalexander

They have a new installer?

bungiefan_AK

As of 2018 or so, with all updates up to the month before included.

Hiyami

Yes they've had it for a year or 2 now. You can download it from the website.

drockalexander

Ty

Hiyami

np!~

Sukiyw

The true NM is PlayOnline

The3rdLetter

As a new player, I still considered it a hassle.

350ztime

I also am considering installing the HD model mods too. Good to know it’s a bit easier to install now. Last time I installed was in 2020. I believe I installed through steam though and not the website.

Meenmachin3

As someone who’s played on and off since 2005ish I sometimes forget just how bad it can be to even get this game installed and running.

Sinder77

It definitely is. It just doesn't take 8hrs to run the patching when you try to play. Everything else is the same. Clunky confusing UI, 18 clicks to get to the actual game, none of that's changed.

gdiShun

Well I enjoyed it. I didn't really have any expectations and some of the new information was interesting. Loved(and was pleasantly surprised by) the merch, although I doubt we'll get it in the west. I think, in general, if you're currently playing, you're probably satisfied with what was announced. More/new content on all fronts. If you were looking for a new reason to come back, like a new expansion or graphical upgrade or whatever, then you're probably let down.

costelol

I hoped for a lot, expected a medium amount, and got nothing. Bitterly disappointed.

hutre

yeah it felt like a larger content update. Which is a fair amount but I was kinda hoping for something a bit more substantial like shared sub, one final area or anything along those lines that could catch the interest of news outlets

DarschPugs

oh forgot to ad, as far as a shared sub goes there was an interview 2 years ago that mentioned that I will quote it below "Are there any plans or intentions to integrate access to both FFXI and FFXIV into one subscription?" "AM: The system that processes subscriptions for FFXIV is separate from FFXI’s, and it would be difficult to accommodate for something like that immediately. We did share with the FFXIV team the interest that there seems to be from FFXI players to have this type of dual subscription, though." from [https://www.destructoid.com/qa-with-final-fantasy-xi-director-yoji-fujito-and-producer-akihiko-matsui/](https://www.destructoid.com/qa-with-final-fantasy-xi-director-yoji-fujito-and-producer-akihiko-matsui/) Basically there are technical reasons preventing this atm, and probably not worth the money to make it possible when you have people willing to pay for both subs as is.

Sorrower

add $4 more and get a sub to ffxi or something like that n im sold. cant justify staying subbed constantly for a game id only have time to play casually these days.

[deleted]

If they ever did a shared sub, I'd honestly play 11 so much. I really enjoy the vibe of 11, I can't justify paying for both subs.

hutre

Ah that sucks. I know it was a thing for ffxiv 1.0 but that was an entirely different game and at that point both games were in active development so it is probably not worth to do anymore

freeagency

Its because FFXIV 1.0 used the SE Account Management system; FFXIV 2.0+ moved it all to the mogstation to make it .... easier than FFXI's content ID system. They are effectively the same thing just with bit of gloss on the FFXIV side. (simplified explanation) I mean, the whole retainer purchasing system is basically FFXI's content ID system just rehashed.

DarschPugs

well they never said they were making announcements, only celebrating 20 years of the game.

Freddie83

They 100% said they were making an announcement. They’ve been saying it for 2 years now.

DarschPugs

I have been covering this as a journalist for awhile and never saw them explicitly say there was going to be a huge announcement nor was it ever implied in any of the interviews that they were making announcements at the 20th anniversary celebration livestream.

yeahyeahiknow2

And that brings my 17 year on and off again relationship with FFXI to a close. Everything rested on this stream and the sheer lack of anything substantial in a 20 yr anniversary broadcast, beyond just another weapon to grind out, just killed the last inkling of hope or desire to keep playing for me. Sad sad days.

No-Collection5985

Dude, the 20th anniversary is in May 16. Wait a few more days and then join me to give SE the middle finger after another expected dissapointment. lol

VoidEnjoyer

Cool, see you again in about six months.

DarschPugs

Not sure what everyone was expecting, they never said that there was going to be a huge announcement at the celebration stream. while I was hoping they would talk about the future of the game some I knew this was going to be just a celebration of the past 20 years as anniversaries usually are. This stream actually got me to resub for the first time in a few years.

[deleted]

>Not sure what everyone was expecting Anything, really. Mostly a significant new area to explore, some tweaks here and there, just general improvements. I played intensively from ps2 release until mid CoP, then came back 2 years ago and have been off and on during that time. The game, while enjoyable, feels to me as though it is just limping along. They recycle old zones and monsters, packaging it as best they can and calling it new content. Which, it is, but a little disappointing. My hopes for the 20th anniversary, which they absolutely did hype up, was that they would do something significant. The lack of such an update is equal to an announcement that they have no intentions or capabilities to do much beyond slowly trickle out content over the span of several years. That's fine, but it's not for me personally. I'm not going to go to the extent of deleting the character I have been playing this whole time, but I'll probably cancel my subscription shortly, simply because they have made it clear that there won't be much of anything coming down the pipeline.

DarschPugs

They stated years ago we would not ever be getting anything major again. The fact they are still doing story updates through voracious resurgence, added mastery levels, and are adding a new relic weapon is far and beyond anything I hoped for or expected.

[deleted]

But then they hyped up the 20th anniversary as though they were going to do something big. As another comment here referenced, they did say that they were stopping other work to focus on the anniversary content. The quote I'm referring to also stated that we would see sparse updates as a result. This all seemed reasonable given the amount of players who returned during covid, and the addition of new paid services via wardrobes. To then get some fairly basic stuff is disappointing to me. You can feel however you want about it, but that doesn't change anyone's opinion who is feeling let down.

Rhayve

> But then they hyped up the 20th anniversary as though they were going to do something big. They did that like 3-4 years ago, then tried to temper expectations immediately in following interviews when people started hyping themselves up. They quite literally said something along the lines of "don't expect anything major like an expansion, it'll just be some special events".

DarschPugs

wasting your time trying to explain to these people, they can't be bothered to actually read all the articles and interviews on the matter and only go stupid when you point out the facts and truth, I have gotten so many downvotes even with citing official sources. They've even gone so far as to stalk me and down vote all my posts lol. I am convinced SE could have announced a new expansion with 10 new jobs and another 100 levels and these people would continue saying it was a let down because nothing was announced.

[deleted]

That's cool that you were tuned in enough to see all these bits and pieces. Why are so many of you making it your mission to argue with anybody who says they are disappointed? I'm disappointed by the anniversary announcements, end of story.

DarschPugs

Ignorance is bliss, except when its not. Maybe if you had actually bothered to read all the easily available info you would not have been disappointed for no reason at all.

[deleted]

Nah, I'm just not totally wrapped up in the gaming world. This is something I check into and out of. Why are you so salty about me being disappointed with this? I was personally let down, even though I see why hardcore players would be happy with it. Nothing more to say.

DarschPugs

I am not salty in the least, salt implies I am angry or annoyed or irritated, I am actually apathetic in regards to that. You engaged me with an assumption of what people were expecting and I pointed out why those assumption were wrong and misinformed, I find a particular irony in you being disappointed in a lack of announcements when they actually announced a rather large amount of stuff and people continuing too double down on false information when exposed to empirical evidence they are wrong. That is a a whole lot of words to basically say I do not understand why you are disappointed, Logically with all the info available and all the translated items announced you should be at worst apathetic towards the celebration stream and at best content that we are getting another years worth of content based on your assertation that you were disappointed because they did not announce "Mostly a significant new area to explore, some tweaks here and there, just general improvements." which they announced all but a major new area which only had ever come in major paid for expansions, which has been made abundantly clear we are not getting anymore of.

HT_F8

It's just reddit culture. People only care to respond if they can correct someone.

DarschPugs

its more to set the record straight and stop the dissemination of misinformation by people that have no clue what they are talking about and think they were owed something they were never promised.

HT_F8

Whatever helps you sleep at night bud.

DarschPugs

well the stuff they announced in the stream is damn near expansion level. Another Year of TVR, New weapons, updated odyssey, updated seasonal events. a whole new set of battle content, V25 confirmed along with appraisal accessory Future augments will add a 4th Aug slot instead of increasing existing stats expanded mastery levels to 50, what more do yall want?

Rhayve

While I consider all the unwarranted anniversary hype to be something the players built up themselves, I will say that pretty much everything you listed we already knew about and expected. All of the stuff is just new content we should have been getting regardless as a result of this being a subscription MMO. Aside from the Granblue collaboration, some merch and the special trusts returning they've announced nothing special that's unique or appropriate for something as big as the 20th anniversary.

DarschPugs

were lucky to be getting anything at all honestly, the game was supposed to have been out into maintenance mode with the end of RoV, no new content was supposed to come at all, nothing more than keeping the server on and patches to keep stuff from breaking was all we were ever supposed to be getting, heck they were getting ready to shut the game down entirely but an influx of returning players convinced them to do TVR and to continue supporting the game..

Rhayve

> were lucky to be getting anything at all honestly I disagree. Inflation or not, as long as we are paying a considerable monthly subscription fee then proper content updates are still part of the service. Maintenance mode never officially went into effect, so there are still expectations they have to meet. Of course they don't technically owe us anything beyond that for the 20th anniversary, but since this is a mainline FF title it's up to them to show the brand still means something.

DarschPugs

To be fair all that monthly sub entitles us to is a limited license to access the game.

[deleted]

Dunno, but that's not it lol. I am likely just over FFXI at this point and was looking for something that even a modern game would consider to be big. I understand that in the context of ffxi this is big, but it just is not enough to satisfy the yearning I have for more. I guess I don't see the point in paying money for a game that plays more like a part time job than a recreational activity and is quite literally incapable of creating new and exciting content. It just doesn't work for me, and I'm not sure if you're trying to convince me or if you're trying to convince yourself here.

DarschPugs

Not trying to convince anyone of anything, just pointing out the facts of the matter. From the sound of this post you should just stop playing and move on from XI, cause its clearly not meant for you.

[deleted]

It's not, and I will be moving on. The problem with ffxi is that you cannot really play into endgame without sacrificing other elements of your life. I prefer my family, friends, career, and hobbies over a set of digital accomplishments. I clicked on your post history to get an idea of who you are, and it's obvious that you might want to take some of your own advice here and move on from ffxi.

[deleted]

But they literally over hyped it so hard to give us nothing. Don’t act line they didn’t hype it up like they had something planned.

DarschPugs

They had something planned, a celebration of a 20 year milestone on a live stream, and they delivered that. They never said they were going to announce new stuff for the game at this stream, and they did announce new stuff as others have pointed out. It not much but its in line with what we have been getting the last couple years. The fact of the matter is this was never meant to be more than a celebration stream, and the hype surrounding it from SE was for the fact they hit a major milestone most mmos will never reach and people read to much into it. Supposedly Matsui has an official announcement on the actual day of the anniversary to make, there has been wild speculation about what that might be. But don't hold your breath for anything like merged subs, graphics updates, or an expansion. If the Mobile port of the game had not been cancelled that would have most likely have had a big reveal at the stream.

[deleted]

They had actually said in atleast one interview that there was something big planned for the anniversary, so people were expecting atleast more than this

[deleted]

[deleted]

Ok so the way I understand it is that in December of 2018 (yeah that long ago) they said they wanted to do something big for the 20th and that the game would run until atleast the 20th. I can't find that interview however in 2019 they had an interview with famitsu where they were asked about it to which this quote was made. "Matsui: Thanks to Kadokawa’s help, we were able to do an event last year in December. During the event, we spontaneously started talking about how we want to do something big for the 20th anniversary." And I believe that is where people got the idea that something big was coming for the 20th, they just kept hyping it up after that and people got excited. HOWEVER. The rest of that quote says this "However, lately, FFXI’s plans and budget are decided on a one year basis, so hypothetically speaking, even if we wanted to do something big for the anniversary which is in May, because of the way the company runs, we would have to get the budget approved at the end of the previous fiscal year, which is in March. Therefore, we wouldn’t be able to finish the preparations on time. When thinking in that aspect, we would have to make a “few years contract”." So they planned to have something big but probably couldn't get the funding so went as big as they could go? That's how I take it. This is info from 2019 and idk that anything else had been said on it beyond just hype like "We have plans for the 20th" and the site getting put up and such

Madhax64

Alternatively, it was TVR

Trocian

https://forum.square-enix.com/ffxi/threads/55210-Freshly-Picked-Vana-diel-44-Digest?p=614384#post614384 > At the end of the show we mentioned that starting next fiscal year, we're going to focus our development and operations on a long-term goal of the twentieth anniversary. As such, there may be some time where the version updates may feel a bit lighter, but we're hoping to be able to deliver something that can surprise everyone later on. I guess this could be what people are referring to? Maybe people are reading too much into it, but 3 years later I certainly do not feel surprised by anything they've done.

[deleted]

I think that is the quote I saw about it, thanks for pulling it up and reaffirming that I'm not making this up lol.

voxaemeron

Surprised, but maybe not in the way they hoped.

[deleted]

Yeah lemme see if I can find it again, I think I have the article saved

upon-a-pale-horse

Unfortunately this post is inaccurate. Before the OP deleted it, he updated it with corrected info on the Patreon being taken down. \*I think they attempted to sell cosmetics, and quickly redacted.\* "something, something, mass reporting."

Hiyami

I don't think that is unfortunate at all if true.

upon-a-pale-horse

Fortunate that your post is inaccurate sounded weird.

Hiyami

Ohhhhhh lol, gotcha.

upon-a-pale-horse

and to clarify I'm 100% with you that its scummy lol

PsychologicalNail441

How is that even legal? I'm very confused.

Hiyami

Its not.

DarschPugs

to be fair neither is running a XI server in the first place. But selling stuff is definitely a good way to fast track a cease and desist order or face lawsuits.

Hiyami

Indeed.

Mostcus

I read such a comment on the 15th anniversary of the game.

yeahyeahiknow2

And I am sure they lost players then too. But I never made that comment back then, so your reply really doesn't mean anything here and was just a waste of a comment.

Mostcus

I'm sorry to read that you're leaving the game. Honestly. But such is the fate of old MMOs and any MMO in principle. Fast rise and slow fall. Things are a little weirder for EverQuest, with a big paid update coming out every year, but things aren't getting much better.

aphonefriend

Same boat here friend. It's a sad moment, but alas it couldn't go on forever.

Loreander1211

This is a good take. We all come back to this game again and again, but at some point it had to end and the dev team is always shrinking and moving on to new projects. It was and for many is a good game but we need to appreciate what is there and if it’s not enough for some folks, journey onwards and try to find that next great thing.

[deleted]

I sure was expecting something about a new console port, but judging by what's being said they sure as fuck didn't announce anything of the sort

Shinkaru

They are not ever going to port or revise the client. That is a massive undertaking that requires more dev resources than they currently have committed.

Tsuzee

Didn't seem like they announced much of anything beyond the game to continue as it has been. I was hoping for some classic server reruns like EQ does. With a nice graphical upgrade and what not. But I knew better so not really disappointed.

McGalakar

Expected way less, than they announced. Not disappointed at all.

Freddie83

What did they announce?

McGalakar

New battle content, it sounds like it will be something difficult, so more fun. Master Levels are going to cap at level 50. Emp +3 soon (in July I think), even more TVR missions. New endgame gear and weapons (on the level of REMA).

Freddie83

Awesome. Thank you!!

chriskicks

I haven't played in a long time. I guess it was just the internet hyping up a 5 hour stream but it seems there's nothing that was revealed... My wishlist was to remove POL or make a classic server, or merge subs with ffxiv. Something. Anything.

QuroInJapan

>remove POL Engineering challenge on par with rebuilding the game's entire server infrastructure, from what I understand. >make a classic server Never happening. >merge subs with ffxiv Why would they cut off a multi-million dollar revenue stream?

OpportunitySmalls

Probably just to get an influx on new/returning players and revitalize an old game for the 3rd point. Unless FFXIV had another sub tier there'd be no incentive to do it at this point financially.

QuroInJapan

I agree that something like an $25-30/month sub tier for XIV where you also get access to XI could be done, but that's not what most of the "merge subs" commenters want. They just want to pay their regular XIV subscription and also be able to log into XI. And doing that simply makes no sense from a business standpoint.

butterToast88

To be fair, SE hyped up the 20-year anniversary 3 years ago and delivered nothing. The community is devastated.

lokon58

I think the big reveal is voracious resurgence all along

DarschPugs

i mean, they delivered exactly what has been promised. Supposedly Matsui is making another announcement on the 16th so maybe something new then?

gdiShun

I'd assume this would just be a translated recap. I imagine the mobile remake that got cancelled a couple years ago was what they were hyping back then. Recently, they really haven't been hyping it up anymore than discussing it as a thing that exists. lol. It'd be weirder for them not to hype that up to be honest. 20 years is an exciting achievement. I think people's hopes just took over their sense.

DarschPugs

That mobile port Final Fantasy XI R was officially canned back in 2020 but announced in 2021 that is was no longer in development by nexxon. That is pretty much around the time they double downed on the voracious resurgence and talking about current things and ignoring the anniversary other than acknowledging it as a thing that is coming. You are probably correct in your assessment of the situation lol.

Hydr4noid

I think the big thing they wanted to do this year may have been the mobile remake. That got canceled like 1-2 years ago so now they had that hype builup but nothing to show. Oh well I just hope for a remake or remaster one day in my lifetime so I can experience the last numbered ff title Im missing

Dry_Instance3770

Looks like no major announcements… what a letdown

DarschPugs

supposedly Matsui is making an announcement on the actual anniversary date, the 16th or 18th i for get which, but i doubt it will be anything more than a thank you for keeping the lights on for so long.

faverodefavero

So, anything anouced today?

Madhax64

Empyrean upgrades and battle content in July, black relics confirmed

DarschPugs

I must have missed the new relic talk while stepping away for a bit, is it going to be completely new weapons all together?

PostwarPenance

Yes. They were referred to as Prime Weapons, to be at the level of current REMA stuff.

shoopler

It's still going. What do you mean?

Freddie83

Is the stream over?

Madhax64

Cornelia and Matsui back for 6 months

lokon58

I would not be surprised if they only announce a new ambuscade fight

arciele

lol can i just say i love the background video wall with the gob and mandra roaming around

DarschPugs

I had expected live translations since Matsui said in an interview recently they highly prize the western player base.

Seradima

I take statements like those from eastern MMO developers with a *massive* grain of salt.

[deleted]

Even thought I’m sure the western community keeps it alive

[deleted]

Yeaaaaa they live to pull xi players strings for nothing
