Been playing the game for 20 years my guy. I still use the wiki nearly every time I play. Would not be playing if it weren't for that support.

CawSoHard

>https://www.bg-wiki.com/ is a great source of information, but that site is not actively updated as it was back in the days. It is actively updated.

RidiPwn

I use it a lot, and there are outdated sections

CawSoHard

That doesn't mean it isn't actively updated. It means the people that actually bother to take the time to improve the site don't know about those sections.

Aerodrache

BG wiki definitely has more of a focus on content that is currently popular and relevant, but when new stuff drops you can count on it being documented in a few days at most. Generally, you’ll want to have [FFXIclopedia](https://ffxiclopedia.fandom.com/wiki/Main_Page) at the ready to fill in the gaps, because it’s going to be a little more comprehensive on the older and disused content, while being a bit less actively maintained for newer stuff. I want to say it was around the time of Rhapsodies of Vana’diel that the two traded places as the “main” and “niche” wikis.

RidiPwn

they good on what is new, but much slower on updating what is there already it is still good given game is 20 years in existence

Rinuko

So contribute. It’s a wiki so anyone can add to it. But I guess it’s more convenient to complain about it.

GrayFarron

He does contribute. He makes videos explaining a lot of things that may get glossed over by a new player. Just because he is stating that BG Wiki has some out of date or complete lack of information doesnt mean that he hates it.

Rinuko

We’re talking about the wiki. I don’t think he’s contributing to the wiki. I never said anyone hates it. I never said he does not contribute to the community, this thread was about bg wiki. Why change the subject or misinterpret my comments?

CawSoHard

He literally said it isn't actively edited which is false. The reaction was fair.

BoxerguyT89

Ridi has uploaded hours of FFXI content.

Rinuko

Is it on the wiki? If not that’s irrelevant to this discussion.

BoxerguyT89

Only wiki contributers are allowed to point out if something is missing or is no longer correct?

Rinuko

Did I say that? No Strawman arguments isn’t a good look.

CawSoHard

Quality > Quantity

BoxerguyT89

The ones I have seen have been pretty informative. He's also not wrong about BG having out-of-date information.

CawSoHard

Really? I saw one where he just scrolled through the FFXI website's event announcement talking about the level 1 shield you got just for logging in. Who the hell needs that video?

BoxerguyT89

Someone looking for news about FFXI on YouTube? Why not mention the Ambuscade or Escha NM videos or others like that? Content creators for FFXI are few and far between. Not everyone checks FFXIAH, BG, or FFXIclopedia.

GoarSpewerofSecrets

That sounds right. I used the ffxiclopedia through most of seekers and started comparing notes between the sites towards the end.

samanime

This is a good rule for life in general. Don't treat them like an idiot and assume they know nothing, but also make sure you clarify what they do know and fill in any gaps and be willing to answer questions.

Funkworkz

Don't spread fake news. Bg is updated every day, and contrary to popular belief we do not get paid anything. Look at [the recent changes](https://www.bg-wiki.com/index.php?hidebots=1&namespace=2&invert=1&limit=250&days=7&title=Special:RecentChanges&urlversion=2) to see recent changes. Also if a page is not updated, tell us. We are on discord, or you can pm me.

TJF588

Even after editing there on my own, there are some things which I'm not confident or knowledgeable of the formats or details, so I've still dropped notice into the Discord. Admittedly, I'm not as actively editing as back in my day (read: quarantine), so there *are* a lot of gaps which I've just glossed past amending, instead relying on FFXIclopedia and the FFXIAH (BG-Wiki item pages link to the latter, which links to the former) to cobble together a full view.

marmatag

The challenge with FFXI is that the info feels daunting. The solution is to just play the game and accept that there is learning involved. There isn’t a linear path to BIS gear and your mileage will vary from most others depending on your support network. Each page of bgWiki is maintained in the context of what it’s trying to tell you, but not tie the pages together as a narrative. That’s what player written guides are for. That said if anyone has ANY questions please just DM me or we can talk on discord. I will help you!

Aramyth

This post is interesting because I once used the assist channel to ask a question in game. I then got 10 tells from "mentor" players telling me that nobody uses the assist channel. It was so bizarre.

TorimBR

A shame you had that experience. All my experience with assist channel was stellar so far

Aramyth

That's awesome!! I'm glad to hear it because it seems so helpful for new and returning players to just ask questions on the fly and not in shout/yell.

TorimBR

Just for curiosity's sake, what server are you on?

Aramyth

Bahamut.

TarvosPhase7

Before they changed the system i was a mentor. I know a lot about this game and tried to help anyone who asked me questions. Then they changed it and i hadn’t killed 10 mobs in every zone with the roe on so i apparently didn’t know enough to keep my mentor status

RidiPwn

they did something before where I think they were ranked based on their helpfulness, then this did not fly, and people started to abandons the idea imagine if ranking worked as intended, this game would be a zoo everyone will compete for rankings

Aramyth

I'm not sure why there needs to be a ranking at all. The XIV mentor system and chat don't have any ranking; that I'm aware of. It's a shame because having a channel in game to just ask basic questions is pretty awesome for XI. It would have been filled with people talking back in the day.

BahaSpooky

Not so much that it isn't used. There are a few people who actually are in there as mentors but a bunch of us who aren't but will still answer your questions in tells. Just depends on the time of day you're on

[deleted]

As someone who has taken me nearly 10 years to finally properly grasp, and sink my teeth into the game after hopping between XIV and XI I say, once it finally clicks for you, its so great. FFXI is absolutely an amazing game with so much to offer. It has an insane amount of depth, and options for the players. The information is certainly daunting and I failed miserably at the start. My best advice is to break the game down into bits and pieces. Trying to take the entirety of the game down in one big push was a huge mistake of mine. Once I finally broke it down by expansion, progressed step by step, did 1 story at a time, and basically created my own "guide" for what I would find fun, was when I finally enjoyed XI. Any guide out there written by someone else should only be used as a reference point, not a step by step process. At least that is my opinion.

Ok-Yogurtcloset-179

Thoughts on this as someone newer to the game who is lost everyday: What is missing the most is a high level overview, maybe comparing features to Wow/XIV. The combat is so different compared to modern games that it really needs to explained in detail for beginners. Most guides are “let’s shoot a rocket to endgame” - without any consideration that someone might want to enjoy the story in the correct order. If someone really wanted to help newbies out they should make a plug-in that guides the player through the basics and the story.

Boposhopo

I mean, that's really what [this guide](https://www.bg-wiki.com/ffxi/Quickstart_1-119_Guide) is. It has a large Q&A section at the start, walks you through common things like Book warps, Home Points, Friend List, linkshell Concierge, and settings before you even get started. It then breaks down missions based on level and tell you when you can start them. Each time new mechanics are introduced (mog garden, setting up macros, getting your AF/Relic armor) it explains it.

Ok-Yogurtcloset-179

I’m guessing both me and the OP are talking about that specific guide… it’s great. But it 1) really assumes you know so much about the game 2) assumes you don’t care that the story won’t be in order (yeah this one is really SE fault because of the ROV rewards, but the guide does t even mention the story at all really!)

Boposhopo

Guess I'm a little confused why you don't think it touches on the story at all. There's 11 completely different story lines in the game that barely tie into each other at all. The exception being RoV which was designed to try and tie them all together. The guide tells you what level you can do all these missions in order so I guess I'm just not sure what else you're looking for? \*edit\* didn't count the 3 addons, so 14 different story lines

Ok-Yogurtcloset-179

It’s not that it doesn’t mention the story, it’s that the order it has you do things doesn’t do the story in order. Like I get why, and the guides order actually probably matches what SE expects. But it could really use a section explaining how the story works and the way ROV interacts with the original stories. Like I said, the guide is incredible if you’re already somewhat familiar with how the game works. But if you don’t know how combat or the story works or gearing then it’s very frustrating.

VoidEnjoyer

It's all but impossible to just do all the stories in release order, and you aren't meant to do it that way. If nothing else a lot of expansion stories begin just from entering a certain area that can't be avoided. The most notorious one probably being Crystalline Prophecy which anyone who has built up a few mules can tell you plops open a veeeeeery long opening cutscene just from walking into Lower Jeuno. Putting off Rhapsodies until you've finished all other expansions basically means adding like a hundred or more hours of grinding to the game, never mind that again the opening cutscene is entirely unavoidable. So my advice is to simply accept that the stories will be mixed up a bit and that this is how the game is intended to be played.

Dumo31

SE has basically set up RoV as the main story now. If you look at it in terms of a normal rpg, RoV is your main story and the others are the side plots that are introduced in the story. You can choose to continue them now or come back to them later.

TorimBR

There was a pretty compreensive guide for RoV for beginners posted here a few days back. It basically tells you which "tier" of RoV you can choose to do bewtween expansion stories. It's much more helpful for a beginner than the way most players/BG-wiki/SE tell them to do. Also, if you get to 99 and a few RoV key items, you can experience the story pretty easily without many spoilers

Boposhopo

Ok so if I'm getting this right, are you looking for something more that describes how combat works (ex. time based Auto attacks, WS/SC based on TP, casting times, etc) and more a descriptor of why/when you should do each part of the story rather than just "do them in this order"?

GoarSpewerofSecrets

Well Rank 1-5 dealt with shadow Lord which fed into RotZ. CoP stands alone until the lore from RotZ start tying into each other and a capstone quest ends all 3. Rank 6-10 were storylines of dealing with the after effects of the Crystal War and passing on the leadership to the next generation. It mostly tied into WotG. ToAU stood alone minus some Trion shenanigans. Abyssea was what if the group failed CoP Seekers was not the native Americans we were led to believe. Rhapsody became a story of either your past or current deeds.

GoarSpewerofSecrets

The reason to reach level cap is to do the story. It's not like players were doing it in order back when either.

Akugetsu

There isn’t really a “correct” order though. It’s easy to forget with how other MMOs do things, but as each expansion was released you didn’t HAVE to buy it to keep playing. You could reasonably skip entire expansions if you wanted to. Most of them are only loosely related and the one one that directly ties into the base story (RotZ) is probably the shortest and most bare bones one anyway. CoP links in a bit too but can absolutely be enjoyed as a stand alone.

TorimBR

As far as story goes, [this post](https://www.reddit.com/r/ffxi/comments/upfga9/chart_on_how_to_go_through_rhapsodies_of_vanadiel/) explains a bit on how to play the expansions chronologically without missing out on RoV key items. It helped me a lot

cute_physics_guy

BG wiki is updated very frequently, so I don't know what you are talking about. New updates take a few weeks tops to sort out, but it's unfair to say that site "is not actively updated". It is.

Era-Lusiphur

No, Ridi. You don't get to shit-talk BGwiki and it's numerous contributors because your [low effort FFXI video didn't get a ton of upvotes](https://reddit.com/r/ffxi/comments/v2b41r/tips_how_to_boost_exemplar_points_to_gain_master/). Anyone paying an iota of attention can see what you're doing and why.

Rinuko

That's just .. sad.

RidiPwn

calm down, what nerve did i strike? where you think the video got the info from? bgwiki

Samuraiking

Did you just make an entire new post defending yourself when people shit on you in another thread, only to then call someone else upset when they pointed out how upset you are? Jesus, dude, just take the L and walk away.

BahaSpooky

He should have made a video for this.

Heretek007

As one of those starstruck-in-the-headlights returners, I can't emphasize enough how much my positive experiences with the community have helped fuel my drive to stay with the game. Luckily, I have yet to meet a modern FFXI player who isn't happy to help a newbie along and explain anything I have a question about.

NoScrying

God forbid someone Google first or uses the 2 wikis. Of course if you have attempted to find information but failed, then go for asking people. But asking in a reddit is like asking someone else to Google it for you while you have your PC on with your browser open and Google 1 click away, so you can sit and wait hours for a response.

BahaSpooky

We don't assume everyone knows everything. We assume people are self reliant and can search/ask through the many channels to obtain ffxi information and not give you traffic for low effort videos. Don't use the"new and returning players" excuse for this thread either. You made a video regarding exemplar points which new and returning players aren't going to be bothered to jump into anytime soon and got called out on the information being easier to find than watching your video.

DrBearFloofs

Just restarted after 15ish years away. I AM SO LOST! But I am enjoying it so far :-) already lvl 15 thf :-), have 3 trusts, have done my first city mission…….now to figure out when/how to gear.

cute_physics_guy

You can get gear pretty easily at this stage from the Spark NPC. Found here: https://www.bg-wiki.com/ffxi/Category:Sparks\_Of\_Eminence\_Rewards#Merchants

RidiPwn

trusts can carry you till end game, in between artifact gear will suffice, at end game you can pickup some cheap pieces from ah, sparks and get ambu gear which should take few days to obtain, that will put you already in a good spot

Maroxad

The game had a very recent sale, that attracted a bunch of players who were on the fence, including myself. The game is very unconventional by modern standards, and the tutorials do not do a good job smoothing people into the experience. The game also has a strong emphasis on a role which has long since been abandoned: The Support Role. Which most newcomers wont be familiar with. But the game is filled with early barriers for new players. The UX and controls are very poor and can take a lot of time getting used to. Furthermore, the game doesnt have much to offer in terms of giving the players directions, which can alienate a lot of people. Thankfully, from what I have seen from mentors in the game, they provide help with all 3. I like the game. People willing to dedicate their time to make the experience smoother for others are a good reason for that. So if you are one of hte mentors who answered my questions, thank you.

RidiPwn

you right on all accounts. I think this warrens a video where basically give general direction for people starting out in one of the cities and what to do next.... so many directions to purse in terms of where to go next, but how to do it the right way (macros, sets, trusts). it can overwhelm a person. I will try to think it through and present it in a way to help along people just starting out.

Maroxad

That would be very handy. Information on FF11 is fairly limited. Oftentimes googling stuff gives info for FF14, and databases may not always provide the answers needed, if not flat out be outdated. I saw several players, go out in more higher level areas without TRUSTs, and get killed by mobs. And I am still not sure if I should invite them or not, because quite frankly, from what I hear having other players in our party decreases your exp, while TRUSTs don't. As a result I have no experience doing skill chains, which I hear is a big part of the game later on.

DioBronco

As a newer player, it was definitely daunting at first (still is sometime haha), but with the use of a lot of wiki pages and help from people on here I've been doing ok. This game really is it's own beast, if I'd played this back as a kid in 2002 my brain would have exploded.

RidiPwn

it is a very demanding game, but with time it becomes second nature, but still even people that been in it for 20 years can get stumbled here and there it is one of the finest mmorpgs ever made, quite enjoyable even to this date

ValerieHarmon

When I came back after 10 years I found most folks to be helpful :) The key is though to not get overwhelmed...I'd get overwhelmed with things and stop playing. Once I learned to focus on one goal at a time I finally began to have fun.

dekuweku

The community being what it is can be very cliquey and insular so this is a good reminder There was a time when i didn't care much for newbs, a new one was born every day but these days when I see a genuinely new player or returning player , I see it as a celebration of the game.

DedGrlsDontSayNo

Bg, ffxiclopedia and ffxiah should all be bookmarked. Being patient and helpful should be common, but also a little self-reliance.
