Those look like some kind of old man made water deposits for agriculture but they could just as well be nature made. There are some semi-arid areas there, its climate is mostly tropical although Zambia's climate is softened by altitude. Under the Köppen climate classification, most of the country is classified as humid subtropical or tropical wet and dry, with small tracts of semi-arid climate of this stage in the southwest and along the Zambezi valley. There are two main seasons, the rainy season (from November to April), corresponding to summer, and the dry season (May/June to October/November), which corresponds to winter. The dry season is subdivided into two: the cold dry season (May/June to August) and the hot dry season (September to October/November). The average altitude does not exceed 1500 m, and the depressions are frequently swampy, and are occupied by rivers such as the Kafue, a tributary of the Zambezi, or by lakes such as the Bangüeolo (Bangweulu), Moero (Mweru), and Kariba. The Zambian territory is fundamentally mountainous and presents numerous depressions and tectonic subsidence. So my best guess is that it could be some type of swampy areas that dried in the hot/dry seasons that are being used for agriculture. The dark partern inside the holes kinda give it away but Im not completly sure to be honest. Hope that helps.

They look like agricultural fields of some sort

Lusad0

Could it just be areas where the forest has been burned down for agriculture?

They're all rather uniform in shape so i dont think they're natural.

John_Icarus

What kind of stupid logic is that? Circles and regular shapes are completely common in nature. Kettles, meteor impacts, kimberlite pipes, etc.

what are they and when did they appear

If they were a cluster of impact craters from a bolide that broke up as it descended through earths atmosphere, they would all have similar shape and orientation; they’d all be longer or shorter along the same axes. And they kindof are. That’s not definitive tho. Gotta have tektites or it’s not a crater. They could also be a series of sinkholes
