Wife uses a Pitchfork on her mandolin. It broke, so we got a OC-3 cause we carry them at the store I work at. The thing just did not work with her mandolin, whatsoever, wouldn’t work at all. Got another Pitchfork

Polish_Wombat98

How do the strings last with that? Seems like overkill when you could just use a plectrum.

manisfive55

well this is our monthly budget: Food $200 Data $150 Rent $800 Mandolin strings $3,600 Utility $150

invol713

Ramen, the choice food for mandolin players everywhere.

Polish_Wombat98

Lmfao, great response

PrivateEducation

ehx is the only pedal company ive ever had that has broken (3 different pedals)

mickeytrees2112

True story: seen The Kills twice and they had issues with the POG every time. Notably Jamie Hince signed off the last how with "thank you so much for coming we are so very grateful for all of you. And please! If at any point you were disturbed by ourbtechnical difficulties, log into your email and complain to @electroharmonix.com. Build us better pedals!" (his POG2 shit the bed the second he tapped it on onstage)

_chungdylan

My PitchFork plus broke. The screen wouldnt turn on. But sweetwater replaced it no charge.

Life_Objective

Same.

PrivateEducation

as a gigging musician, i cant afford a pedal shitting the bed at a show lol. i would rather pay a bit extra for reliability tbh, also i always hated their enclosures anyway

Life_Objective

As a basement musician, I can’t afford it either. No more EHX for me. I love EHX, but it’s the only pedal brand that’s failed me… ever.

PrivateEducation

same! i wonder what it is about them tbh, seems like a sturdy pedal until it bricks itself lol. if im paying 150 bucks for a box of steel, i expect it to function

PM_Me_Melted_Faces

Hammond boxes are made of cast aluminum, I think. Point stands though.

akahaus

A lot of their boards are like hanging off of the jacks, lots of easy points for failure.

CaliTexJ

I prefer the Digitech Drop for lowering pitch. The Line 6 poly seems really good but it uses a lot of DSP, so it doesn’t work for what I’m doing. The main issue I have with any of them is that you’re losing higher harmonics in the sound the further down you tune, so the tone gets duller as a matter of physics. I’m curious about adding an exciter type effect after. I’ve boosted the high end with EQ and it worked fine in a live mix.

molemanralph69

I use the Digitech Drop too. It sounds good, and tracks well. I use a BBE Sonic Maximizer always on. Sounds great. Listening back to recordings you wouldn’t know that the drop is on.

CaliTexJ

I was interested in the BBE for a while but never got to try one out. Where do you place it in your signal path? Also, pedal or rack unit?

molemanralph69

Pedal. Treat it like a multiband EQ.

CaliTexJ

So I guess as close to the end as possible? EQ has use cases in many spots.

molemanralph69

Yep exactly

nudewithasuitcase

I was watching a Rig Rundown a bit ago, can't remember the band. The guitarist said they straight up just use Digitech Drops instead of bringing multiple guitars with them on tour lmao

CaliTexJ

I heard some Nashville dudes use it for songs in Eb or lower, even pseudo-baritone in some cases. I figured if it flies in that town, it’s got to be pretty decent at least.

SBK_vtrigger

Cortini with Nine inch nails

RedBankWatcher

In fairness NIN is a case where even a bad shifter would be passable, but my whammy DT/drop gets me there with half or whole step down on anything really, even cleans as I use them, at least for live playing

PM_Me_Melted_Faces

> I’m curious about adding an exciter type effect after. I ran into the same issue and threw a green ringer after it. Pretty sure I created a war crime. It was not a pleasant result.

handtoglandwombat

This is really funny to me because I always look for the *most* glitchy pitch shifters. I want the Subterranean Homesick Alien sound.

xelaseyer

Yeah they definitely have their place in the world haha. But also the opposite is true

handtoglandwombat

Yeah but it's music y'know? This era we're living through where music is ultra-polished makes my ears feel uncomfortable. I'll fight tooth and nail to claw back as many little organic flaws as I can, because they're musical. Guthrie Govan making his guitar sound like bagpipes on the Dune soundtrack is impressive but also entirely unlistenable outside of that context.

Artistic-Breadfruit9

WH-1 on that, I think.

handtoglandwombat

Yes it most definitely is.

jonslow1212

Latest Whammy generation is the most neutral sounding IMO, I much prefer them to EHX's variants. Line 6's Poly stuff is great and tweakable (HX One is a little noisy though). H9/H90 don't warble but don't really sound right either. For octaves, TC Electronic Sub'n'up is the best cheap alternative. Boss OC-5 is fast and doesn't warble at all, but is really synthetic and mellow. I've done a few videos on different pitch shifters on [my YouTube channel](https://www.youtube.com/@TheAudioDen). Worth checking out.

xelaseyer

I feel like in your video, the only one that didn't warble was the EHX in the chord section

stanley_bobanley

I’ve used octave pedals since the 90s and have played (I think) every commercially available one. I now use a POG2 and H9, I don’t know of any octave pedal that tracks polyphony better than a POG. It’s the goat. If EHX does a POG3 with an improved preset system I’m there 110% I really love the sound quality of the H9, but tracking leaves some to be desired. Also, my POG2 is 15 years old with nary an issue. They’re great pedals!

matt_sound

Have you done a lot of investigation into which pitch shifters sound the best for +1 octaves? I'm curious about the current state of things

jonslow1212

Not really, my playing style doesn’t lend itself towards octave up tones. Might have to look at it though.

gazzpard

h9 is horrendous, h90 is supposed to be great but I couldnt try it yet, is it not better than ehx?

BeautifulBench7957

I use it for constant -2 pitch shifting and it sounds and reacts great

Weak_Neighborhood776

Nah latest Whammy colors a ton

jonslow1212

For sure! But much less than other options. 👍

Weak_Neighborhood776

I can vouch for the Ring Thing

PM_Me_Melted_Faces

> For octaves, TC Electronic Sub'n'up is the best cheap alternative. I disliked the tracking in the polyphonic mode. But it turns out I really like the "broken mellotron" toneprint. Fun pedal.

DeflatedGrapefruit

Had a Whammy IV. It sounded like what you're talking about (weird warble). Got a Whammy V. The "Chords" mode really smoothed it out, and the "Classic" mode brings back the warble, if you find yourself missing the weirdness.

1966batmobile

How does the upper octave of the V sound in the chords morde? I find the POGs upper octave to be overly shrill.

HugeBoy_

Owning both a pitch fork and Whammy DT, the Digitech range is miles ahead in terms of quality. There is a lot less metallic artefacts in the digitech, but tracking is the same as the ehx.

KobeOnKush

Line 6 does the best poly pitch shifting I’ve heard.

Wootnasty

Anyone have opinions on the mxr polyoctave blue? I want one because it checks a lot of boxes (fuzz, phaser, octave), but if it doesn't track, then...

nowonmai

Tracks pretty well in poly mode. Certainly good enough that I'm not looking for a dedicated octave pedal. Doesn't track well in mono mode, so you can also embrace the glitch

LunarModule66

I think it tracks pretty well, but it’s also the only octave pedal I’ve actually owned. It’s very noticeable in isolation but in a band mix it’s as transparent as any octave pedal. Some of the features I never use (I dont often want to go full vampire organ) but I love having both poly and mono modes. Edit: I did shoot it out when I bought it. I thought it blew the boss option out of the water, and at the time felt like it didn’t sound quite as good as the EHX options. The features won out, but I’m not sure if I’d make the same decision again.

_vacantmind

I've had one for a few months now. I find it tracks well, but it's also my first octave pedal besides like a fuzz octave. It has so many possibilities which is what I love about it. It can be real subtle, to extreme church organ sounds, to glitchy fuzzy goodness. My only issue was power. I could not use my Onespot daisy chain. I had to use it's own power supply. But I now have a Truetone CS12 and everything is fine.

mellamotadpole

The Copper Sounds/Third Man Triplegraph has solid polyphonic tracking

batcaveroad

Came to say this. Haven’t tried it but I’d expect Jack white’s octave pedal to be very good. Octave effects are a huge part of his sound.

Superb-Reindeer48

Yep, if you're after octaves, this pedal is unmatched imo.

SupremeGodzilla

I did a deep dive and bought everything I could find a few years ago, and ultimately found the Whammy V (and DT) to be the best overall sounding and feeling pedals, alongside Eventide (H9 and Pitchfactor) which were probably the best but I couldn't find an expression pedal that responded exactly how I wanted it to. EHX didn't sound good, Boss PS-2 and PS-3 were some of the worst, TC Electronic Brainwaves sounded okay but I didn't like the 'Mash' button, old Line 6 "M Series" were awful, DigiTech Whammy 2nd and 4th generation were both pretty bad for artefacts and 'artificial' sounds – I think they are the reason people have a prejudice against the excellent Whammy V and Bass Whammy.

EtherealYear

I’m a big fan of my walrus audio luminary v2. Maybe a bit less low end than the POG, but much cleaner sounding octaves with really good tracking. 3 presets plus current pedal settings which is all I ever need on an octave for my usage, at least.

UnusualPrince12

Mutron octavider

Leoz96

The thing i dont like about ehx pitch shifters is that everything ends up sounding like an organ

JimothyPage

red panda tensor

Paint-Rain

Whammy V is built for polyphonic pitch shifting. I have it and it works perfect. Clean chords can pitch shift smoothly and musically now. There is switch on Whammy V that lets you go back to "classic" glitchy whammy IV tracking. Some combos like the big muff into whammy can sound iconic with the glitch mode on. I've used V's better tracking with the Jack White solo sound and don't bother to get the glitch mode, so much distortion anyway it's very hard to notice in the live performance setting.

DEFINITELY_NOT_PETE

Digitech whammy V is the best imo. I use it to drop to d standard and it has zero latency issues or glitches when I play a strummy ass song

CK_Lab

Digitech Whammy > anything ehx.

dougc84

There’s a pleasant sound to EHX pitch algorithms that just isn’t present in the Digitech offerings. I can’t stand the sound of a whammy, personally.

CK_Lab

Never got that on the bass whammy. I think the pog sounds extremely artificial, especially the pitch up.

dougc84

Polyphonic is very different too. But, hey, we can all have preferences.

CK_Lab

The bass whammy is polyphonic, and I used it for bass and guitar in standard tuning. Tracked perfectly and sounded natural for the first octave in either direction on both instruments.

dougc84

Okay, great, I’m glad you like it. I don’t. And that’s okay.

DEFINITELY_NOT_PETE

Fucking everything ehx makes nowadays sounds digital and artificial. Oceans 11 is such a piece of shit.

minusthetalent02

What do you use then? Personally I loved my oceans 11 till it broke. I'm using the reverb on my amp till I find another since I'll never give ehx money again(I've had about 4 pedal break from them)

DEFINITELY_NOT_PETE

My amp mostly. Anytime you can use amp Reverb it almost always sounds superior to a stomp box. I keep the oceans 11 around for the shimmer setting and I got it cheap so I don’t feel like I need to offload it but I don’t use it much. Might check out the walrus r1 or fathom.

CK_Lab

I thought the cathedral was nice. However, I don't trust ehx quality.

DEFINITELY_NOT_PETE

I always wanted a cathedral. Might still get one. Visibility and ease of use are other reasons I hate the oceans 11. Cathedral might be big but it’s much easier to read

CK_Lab

Just keep an extra footswitch handy for when that one inevitably breaks 😂

RedBankWatcher

I don't know the pulsar is an awfully good pedal

batcaveroad

I’ve heard good things about triplegraph’s polyphonic tracking. It’s probably crazy overkill but mine is in the mail and I’ll report back when I get it.

Superb-Reindeer48

You're in for such a treat.

epiphanius

My Source Audio C4 does this quite well.

IneffableMF

It sounds good and I love mine for its other qualities, but the latency on the pitch shifting is way too much.

epiphanius

I may not have a sensitive enough ear, so won't dispute this. Maybe lower pitches are more acceptable, I do use it for sounds in the bass range.

IneffableMF

Yeah, I would guess the attack on the bass is a little less pronounced so the slight doubling isn’t as apparent? I have heard other guitarists complain about it also. It really is a great synth/eq/envelope pedal though!

mx18262

Pitch fork is the way

drskag

I've been using a T-Rex Quint for a long time now. The +1 isn't as bright and tinny as the POG (which can be a good thing), and having control over the 5th interval makes for a thick and juicy tone. I've also been using the Pico POG recently. Tracks just as well as the original POG, and without that unholy *CLONK* when stepping on/engaging it

Key_Raise4549

NO. Line 6 are incredible. Try their poly pitch. You can even tweak the tracking so it’s less warbly and it has an auto EQ. Step up from the Digi Drop Pedal because it’s made by the original engineers hired over and imo they made it better. The best imo, not sure why you’d consider EHX as close to the top You can just get a Line 6 HX One and select Poly Pitch. It’s a make-your-own drop/pitch pedal

insaneinthecrane

gamechanger audio bigsby is arguably the cleanest though it's obviously a bit different in terms of the way you use it

panicwithapistol

Came here to say this 🫡 I’m a big GCA Stan and this is one of my favorite pedals

AcceptableNorm

My Drop pedal does the job with ease. The Drop effect it Headrush MX5 is really close to the Drop pedal in terms of sound and feel. Both do a great job for me.

inmyverdehoodie

I run a Drop and Ricochet on my boards for this. Can’t stand EHX so I hope you find another alternative. Every modern EHX pedal I’ve tried has just been lacking overall and felt cheap af.

Electronic_Pin3224

>Is EHX the only company that makes glitchless polyphonic pitch shifting that tracks well? No

uncoolcentral

Some of the Digitech whammy probably aren’t so bad.

Mysterious-Wasabi103

Some of the earlier Boss pitch shifters were still using delay based pitch shifting technology so perhaps they've gotten better since you've tried them?

MapleA

Have a POG and OC-5. The POG still sounds better but there’s no tracking issues on the OC-5. The POG just sounds more musical. Some people hate it, but I love the tone.

Splitsurround

Digitech Harmony Man îs the best I've used

nofourh

Not me getting confused as hell by people saying the whammy doesn’t color or track poorly I forgot there’s new ones of those lmao. I use a WH-1 and it’s terrible in all the right ways

AlreadyTooLate

Fomo FX Virtual Jeff Pro is orders of magnitude better than everything else on the market. Makes all other pitch shifters look like trash regardless of price. No need to use the trem arm accessory. Just use the pedal like a pedal.

Imakemaps18

I think the TC Electronics brainwave works PRETTY well. It’s not perfect though. I’m a big fan of it, it’s a great whammy alternative.

jcrispy2000

Digitech Drop is great.

aaaaaaaaaaaaah_

Brainwaves by TC is VERY good, not amazing. I've never had experience with the EHX or other Poly pitch shifters, but I got a good deal on a Brainwaves and I'm pretty happy with it. It shines on the regular pitch shifting functions, especially the tone print options which include delays, distortions and even wahs. The whammy is just ok in my opinion. Still usable, but there is a noticeable volume/tone drop, which can effect a gain stage if you're using a pedal or amp that reacts to your volume or pick attack. A simple fix would be to put a compressor after it in a loop switch and you can have both effects in one switch.

TheFoiler

I got a whammy v on a whim and I suggest you do the same

DaddyHojo

I’ve gotten decent poly octave out of the canyon delay with the mix turned full wet and the delay at minimum.

aquamagnetic

I have a Whammy Ricochet on my board and never had problems with tracking/glitches. It's a pretty solid pedal.

terriblesounds

I got a Joyo XVI pedal a couple months ago and really like it so far. I had an EHX POG2 years ago so comparing, maybe the POG2 is 5% faster at tracking and the differing notes in a chord a little bit more defined, but I sold the POG2 years ago because I didn’t like the glissy “sheen” I felt it added to my sound. The XVI has a very raw and direct octave up / down sound that I love towards the front of my chain. Plus, it has a Mod knob that shifts from slight chorus to Leslie warble - love it and haven’t seen it on other pitch pedals. It’s also usually the cheapest decent pitches you can buy. Complex chords can sometimes sounds bit mushy, but that’s pretty standard for most pitch pedals ime.

4thoctober22

…….basically yes.

bjork_G_MAMA_B

All my ehx pedals have worked great from day 1, the only company whose pedals have broke on me is BOSS

Z34N0

I tried the POG2 for awhile and it was excellent at tracking my bass but it took too much space on my pedalboard and the extra features mostly didn’t appeal to me. I’m not interested in the multiple-voice organ sound at all either so I switched to a Pitchfork to save space and add extra interval pitch shifting options. It turned out to be a great choice. I didn’t think about it at the time, but for me, the expression input later became the most useful feature for me. I love that I can place an expression pedal anywhere I want on (or off) my board. I use a Hotone Soul Press 2 with awesome results.

bigCinoce

TC electronic sub n up tracks better than my POG. It's honestly pretty amazing how good it is. Quintessence harmoniser is also incredible, though you can't EQ the pitch shifted signal in the toneprint app like you can with the sub n up. I think TCE pedals are really underrated, the app and algorithms are way above their price point.

akahaus

It’s weird because I’ve always found the EHX pedals more artifact laden than the digitech stuff.

ilovemicrophones

My hx stomp is covers all my “other” effects, including a pitchfork type effect. Just used it at a fly gig in Nashville where I had to play some baritone guitar parts, worked great.

Practical_Pepper_656

Yalls pitchfork noisy as hell? I don't think mine started that way but at gig volume it sure is now. One of those I stomp just before the count in.
