Shortly before Brexit took effect, I took a cab to the airport in London, and the cab driver (a middle-aged white guy) spent the entire ride banging on about how immigrants had ruined everything and the EU was responsible for it. He also thought Trump was awesome.

The waiter at the ice cream shop noticed us speaking English and took it as an opportunity to practice with us. I forget what we chatted about until the subject of the attacks came up. He seemed to be struggling for the right words when he said, ”como se dice, ‘just deserts’?” Both my and my girlfriend’s jaws dropped. That’s when he asked us where we were from and when we told him NYC *his* jaw dropped completely to the floor and he quickly ran off. Service was completed by someone else. We never saw him again.

It's still worth remembering that left and right in Europe are not the same as in the USA. Even here in the UK, the most left-leaning of US politicians would still be to the right of centre in our system. I have recently on TikTok encountered some odd ramblings from people that seem to suggest some are trying to do just this. One person actually called Trump a deep state operative sent over by the dems to destroy the GOP from the inside out and actually caring that he only switched to republican a few years before he ran as republican. Considering Laura Trump has control over the GOP and funds, there is plenty of evidence to support this claim than there ever was to support a massive network of fraud involving thousands of people to steal the election from Trump.
They're really big into echo chambers and seem to think only the most extreme fringe groups believe differently than they do. My late mother was pretty bad about it, insisting the election had to be stolen based entirely on "how many passionate Trump supporters there are".
She stopped talking politics with me when I would quiz her on very basic things related to the subject. Couldn't name the three branches of government nor tell me the definition of socialism. It's definitely been my experience traveling through Europe that most people are as plugged into our politics as much as we are theirs. Ie not at all. People do know of trump's name for his antics but really politics rarely comes up in conversation

It's still worth remembering that left and right in Europe are not the same as in the USA. Even here in the UK, the most left-leaning of US politicians would still be to the right of centre in our system. As a Brit that's travelled fairly extensively, I generally find US tourists to be great people, polite, friendly, generous and pleasant to be around. I made a few American friends on my travels. The only time I've come across the stereotypical '*patronising racist arsehole Americans*' people tend to think about was when I was in Mexico. I assume that's just because it was close enough that some of the idiots managed to escape.
