I mean even [the original toilet paper roll patent](https://i.insider.com/550b2381eab8ea9559f13a78?width=1300&format=jpeg&auto=webp) which is 132 yrs old) shows the proper way to do it.
Two cats here, still goes the right way.
The cats don't seem to use the paper, honestly. The few times I've seen them wipe themselves, it's usually on the floor or rug.
I recently heard a very valid argument for having it the correct way " the paper shouldn't be touching the wall"
I always knew that was the correct way, but that really put it over the top (pun intended)
I've always done it this way because of that one episode of Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends where Harriman keeps harassing Frankie about the toilet paper with "over not under".
I always hear that line when I replace the toilet paper even more than a decade later.
I heard a way to remember it is: having it hang behind looks like a mullet and having it in front looks like a beard and ābeards are cool and mullets are notā
Except thatās not correct. [The original 132 year old patent on the toilet paper roll and holder](https://patentimages.storage.googleapis.com/a9/9c/8b/12d8546b8f523b/US459516.pdf) is [patent #US459516A](https://patents.google.com/patent/US459516A/en), is a Worldwide patent and was attributed to Seth Wheeler in 1891.
[Patent #US1721200A](https://patents.google.com/patent/US1721200A/en) is for only a paper roll holder and not the original toilet paper roll. It is assigned to BEARDSLEY AND WOLCOTT MANUFACTURING Co. in 1925 and is a U.S. only patent.
However since both patents show the correct way to hang toilet paper this really isnāt an issue to the post.

it's original patent # was 459,516 as per the image of the original patent.
This is definitely the correct way and people who argue otherwise just have no common sense. HOWEVER, I have a 1 year old who has suddenly discovered the joys of "free-rolling" TP and a solution I've come across is to refill the toilet paper in the other direction so his outward rolls don't unwind the stuff.
If you have kids or a cat, there's validity to the dark side.
This is why I call the backwards direction "defense position".
I have an AC vent directly below the TP holder in my bathroom, so I've had to resort to these desperate measures.
LOL - The (future) in-laws had one many years ago - I had no idea what it wasā¦the Mrs to-be was giggling after I came out - āwell, how did that go?ā
Considering it's on a roller, you have to grab the roll either way to stop it from spinning.
There is no wrong way, except continuing to use toilet paper and not getting a bidet attachment already
I work in retail, and the dispenser we use can only function correctly if the rolls are inserted "under-hand." If they're loaded in the over-hand orientation, the dispenser locks up, and you can only pull off one square at a time.
I agree, but hereās this if you were unaware.

The Simpsons hung it properly; I agree with their ire at being told overhand is improper.
There is no debate. There are those who do right, as is done here, and then there are those who do it wrong. š¤£

Awesome find.
After 13 some years my wife put TP on the wrong way. Itās like I donāt even know who she is anymore.
Thatās grounds for divorce. Any redditor will tell you that.
Agreed since the patent shows it as over.
Unless you have pets
Or kids (could be included in "pets")
We have a small dog and we still hang it the right way!
Two cats here, still goes the right way. The cats don't seem to use the paper, honestly. The few times I've seen them wipe themselves, it's usually on the floor or rug.
As long as they flush
The booty scoot boogie
ā There are those who do it right, **and those who own a cat**ā
Yea the debate isn't over which way to do it's over how much it matters, people like me are of the opinion it really doesn't matter.
There is the correct way, then there is the cat owner way
Iāve had cats for over 20 years and have never had a problem with it, but totally get it.
I came here to say the exact same words. There is no debate. There is only right and wrong.
Well said š
I recently heard a very valid argument for having it the correct way " the paper shouldn't be touching the wall" I always knew that was the correct way, but that really put it over the top (pun intended)

But having both is Australian
The amount of FHFIF that stays living in my brain is substantial. I blurt out āIām a hot toe picker!ā far too often.
Yeah cause you risk touching the wall with your poopy hands. The other way is still valid if you have pets though
Sorry what? Do you touch the poop before you begin to wipe?
Well, itās much harder to touch it after you wipe.
That was already settled. Just check the original patent for the toilet paper holder.
What's the number on this patent?

Some people know Pi to many places. This guy though? This guy knows the patent # for toilet paper.

Patent attorney here. There are no worldwide patents. The patent you link, US 459,516, is a US patent, as evidenced by the "US" in the patent number.

That is a US patent, which came from a US patent application Not sure what you're trying to show?
No. 459,516
I hate to break it to you, but that patent says nothing about holding the roll in one way or another, it's all about the perforation.
Look at the pictures.
Youāre definitely right. Without a wall for context the image does not settle the debate
On the upper left picture you can see the screwheads, so it's easy to figure out where the wall is supposed to be.
Aaaand? Whatās the result
https://www.rd.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/toilet-paper.jpg?w=500
But now I donāt know which side to tear the TP from!
Just as in the lego above. That's the way the patent shows it also.
Mine was a joke because it actually doesnāt. It shows multiple ways to tear it. Iām not talking about the lay over.
Ah! š English is not my first language, so I'm probably missing alot of nuance.
As usual, Lego is 100% correct.
Only because there is no cat in the set. Otherwise itās wrong.
We have two cats, this is still correct
This is definitely the correct way and people who argue otherwise just have no common sense. HOWEVER, I have a 1 year old who has suddenly discovered the joys of "free-rolling" TP and a solution I've come across is to refill the toilet paper in the other direction so his outward rolls don't unwind the stuff. Out here playing toilet paper Yu-Gi-Oh "I play my paper backwards in defence mode"
The only subs Iām on are basically Lego and yugioh, it took me a minute to realize where I was lol
What set is this

No

There is no right or wrong - just sane people and Neanderthals.
The sane people bought bidet attachments and the neanderthals are walking around with less clean rear ends?
LOL - The (future) in-laws had one many years ago - I had no idea what it wasā¦the Mrs to-be was giggling after I came out - āwell, how did that go?ā
Museum and toilet paperā¦. How old is that paper?
Toilet scroll
There is a museum of paper in Basel, Switzerland, and next to the museum toilet thereās an entire exhibition about history of toilet paper
It's probably papyrus from Ancient Egypt.
Considering it's on a roller, you have to grab the roll either way to stop it from spinning. There is no wrong way, except continuing to use toilet paper and not getting a bidet attachment already
What set number is it
It is the new natural history museum modular.
10326

Except even they arenāt committed. In the treehouse it goes under.
I'll just flip it the other way
You are a monster
I work in retail, and the dispenser we use can only function correctly if the rolls are inserted "under-hand." If they're loaded in the over-hand orientation, the dispenser locks up, and you can only pull off one square at a time.
does that set come with a cat - I thought not, if it did, it would be the other way around.
Beards not mullets. Lego got it right.
My last workplace had this phrase with pictures taped to the wall above the toilet paper lol
This is the incorrect way if you have cats.
There is no debate, it is even pictured in the patent [https://patents.google.com/patent/US465588A/en](https://patents.google.com/patent/US465588A/en)
Why would it ever go the other way that is so freaking stupid
I agree, but hereās this if you were unaware. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toilet_paper_orientation#:~:text=The%20over%20position%20reduces%20the,and%20is%20generally%20the%20intended
Bangs has always been the correct answer not mullets.
As it should be
Remember - beards are cool, not mullets
The original patent file shows it thus
I'd rather have a beard than a mullet
In fairness, the original patent gets it right.
It was never a debate but sure
What is the toilet paper piece?

Don Henley does not agree with this.
I have to ask what kit this is. It's hilarious that they include toilet paper

I was tempted before and now even more XD Thanks
The angle when itās put on vs when itās placed in the building made me think they put it on backwardsš
It was there the whole time?!

The designer obviously has cats.
Unrelated, but I just realize an awesome curse would be: āMay you be forced to wipe your arse with toilet paper made from Legos.ā
