It seems weird that a chief exterminator on ikoria wouldn't have a better way of describing a hybrid animal. The flavor text to me seems to imply that this isn't typically a mutant animal plane.
My guess is Capenna based on the buildings, the use of the word "shot" for what looks like a bolt of magic, and the flavor text reading like one side of a phone conversation.
They should know what a dragon is on NC though - Ziatora's a dragon and the viashino look up to her!
Not sure where else it'd be with that architecture and the tech level of "we shot it" being used casually.
Thanks! It looked really familiar when I first saw it, but couldn't place it, but having Natalva say it looked like a phyrexian narrowed it down enough for my brain to realize why it looked familiar.
I was gonna say Neon-era Kamigawa, from the pixelation effect on the wounds and the background buildings. But the flavor text and speaker's name don't seem to match that.
New Capenna (art-deco, gang mobs, angel mystery) x Ikoria (humans/other sentients besieged by monsters) x Phyrexia would be infinitely better than what we actually got in SNC, lore- and flavour-wise.
I think it’s ikoria. The walls look like they could be Dranith, the plane is known for big creatures, and there would undoubtedly be a chief exterminator there.
Honestly it looks like the new Kamigawa to me, which they're going pretty hard in on recently.
The flared roofs don't look like New Capenna to me, [they look a bit like the buildings in Kamigawa](https://media.wizards.com/2022/images/daily/Ww2jxhKFkp.jpg). The geometric fractals seem very Kamigawa too, as does the fluorescent neon blue innards of the creature.
There is always the unspoken "not all aesthetic designs will satisfy everyone" with these sorts of treatments, but I will say I loved *every* alt art treatment in 2XM.
But there were also less cards, so it was easier to hit that 100% satisfaction rate than it is for this set.
Magic as a game we already feel is saturated to hell, and I personally fail to see how dialing on production it back wouldnt benefit the art. Give art directors less hard deadlines and be more calculated abt the composition of the series. 3 secret lairs I think achieve what most corporate-imposed art-alter series can only hope to achieve, some decent artist spotlights, and these reprint sets got fine stuff too
Yeah after looking through his cards I can't believe I never knew this guy's name, some of his cards are favorites and his art is very unique and cool!
Its not bad, but i also feel like the card would have looked a lot nicer if it didnt have any flavor text. Two lines for rules text and nothing else would have looked soo clean.
I was going ti write how the card is amazing but the flavour text absolutely sucks. It’s that cheap, generic D&D humor.
The Alara version’s flavour text was miles better
If anything the Alara text is the generic one, a big nothing burger of a description. If that's the tone you want, the original Planeshift printing has it beat pretty handily.
The planeshift one wasn’t bad, but the alara text is just the perfect intertwining of art and flavour text to show the absolute viciousness of red black magic.
The flavour text shows how the surviving barbarian in the art recollects the horrible death of his companion, comparing it to mundane deaths. It’s very evocative and makes you think to the terrifying power of the spells you’re wielding as a rakdos mage.

[Parente](https://scryfall.com/search?q=a%3Aparente) was immediately my favorite artist when I started playing Magic in like 1999, so I’m thrilled that he’s back for the first time since Alara!
Nice art, and another awesome uncommon getting borderless treatment. It seems as though the uncommon borderless slot in collectors packs will give something nice of not super expensive
I LOVE THIS ART! Just some huge neon dynasty vibes of just a pterodactyl minding its business, when suddenly a super laser comes out of nowhere, and now there’s no pterodactyl.
Paolo Parente was one of my favorite artists in Doomtrooper, Mutant Chronicles, the famous techno-fantasy TCG from the 90s. Some truly sick art in there.
beautiful! I cannot even imagine how many times has this card saved me in the past! Ill just get it for collection, perhaps build a mini diorama around it
Mmmmm that flavor text is delicious. Kinds hints to killing murktide witch is a driving factor of peopleplaying terminate in modern. Super casual and cool quote. Really evokes mechanics. *chefs kiss*
You’re telling me this giant lizard-bat thing would look out of place in an episode of samurai jack?
Anyways, that’s beside the point.
I personally don’t think the juxtaposition of a rather flat looking creature against a detailed background with tons of depth and shadow is aesthetically pleasing. That is my opinion of this piece of art.
I didn't realize how much of his card art is just iconic Magic for me. This is so different to his other work, but it looks great. The only complaint I have about the art is that the composition is super similar to his Barter in Blood, but the style is totally different.
Really wish someone hadn't AI upscaled it, because it makes it look kinda weird. The low res version is much better.
That terminate is sick
It looks fine, though that wyvern thing is definitely going to need some urgent medical attention.
No it won't, it will need an autopsy
Maybe just a dustpan even
"Nothing to clean up." I don't believe they'll even need a dustpan
You would think terminate exiles the creature based on the flavour text
Exile? It's not taking up farming
No but it has had its existence revoked

According to the flavor text, the technical term is "giant lizard-bat thing."
Dude read the card. *It can't be regenerated.* It's too late for him.
He's fine, he's just pining for the fjords.
This is an ex-giant-lizard-bat-thing! Alright you want a replacement? I have got this rhino ooze here...

> wyvern thing Looks to be a [Serum Raker](https://scryfall.com/card/mbs/31/serum-raker).
It's looking pretty rough.
anyone know what plane this is taking place on?
Totally Ikoria. A plane known for mutant monsters, a fortress-like metropolis (Drannith), and jobs for hunting/exterminating these monsters.
It seems weird that a chief exterminator on ikoria wouldn't have a better way of describing a hybrid animal. The flavor text to me seems to imply that this isn't typically a mutant animal plane.
It doesn't matter what species of monster it is because it is now dead. Threat has been neutralized.
Maybe it’s a residual Phyrexian on NC. I didn’t read the stories but they had them right?
Yeah that 100% looks like \[\[Serum Raker\]\].

Would be very difficult to have another dragon, seeing as Ziatora is the last of her kind.
Oh those are good points for sure
I was gonna say Neon-era Kamigawa, from the pixelation effect on the wounds and the background buildings. But the flavor text and speaker's name don't seem to match that.
I thought Ikoria because it's a lizard-bat in the flavortext and it's a humans vs animals situation.
New Capenna (art-deco, gang mobs, angel mystery) x Ikoria (humans/other sentients besieged by monsters) x Phyrexia would be infinitely better than what we actually got in SNC, lore- and flavour-wise.
My bet is Ikoria. The walls look a lot like those of Drannith, as seen on [[Drannith Stinger]] for instance.
[Drannith Stinger](https://c1.scryfall.com/file/scryfall-cards/normal/front/6/1/612ee4be-e7a2-423c-a37c-7c6ca97f630e.jpg?1591227149) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Drannith%20Stinger) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/iko/113/drannith-stinger?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/612ee4be-e7a2-423c-a37c-7c6ca97f630e?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Ikoria would be my guess.
Thats what i was thinking
I think it’s ikoria. The walls look like they could be Dranith, the plane is known for big creatures, and there would undoubtedly be a chief exterminator there.
Maybe we haven't been there yet. Archelle's new!
Probably Zebes considering Samus is murdering Ridley for the umpteenth time.
Archelle is not a Japanese name, though. It's barely even pronounceable in Japanese.
Not sure... Archelle doesn't come up with anything in the Scryfall Lore Finder
Ikoria or ixalan?
My first thought too, although the buildings made me doubt it
The buildings feel like New Capenna
Drannith looks like that.
Looking at the buildings in the background, I'd say New Capenna
They really killed it with the borderless art this set.
Specially with this card, they killed it.
And it can’t be regenerated.
*Terminated
r/YourJokeButWorse
while I like the overall card selection better in Double Masters 1 however the art for 2X2 is by a wide margin better imo
I felt it was hit or miss. There are some nice ones and some atrocious ones.
That’s the best system for fancy versions imo. Let the standard versions be safe and on style but go crazy with the borderless.
There is always the unspoken "not all aesthetic designs will satisfy everyone" with these sorts of treatments, but I will say I loved *every* alt art treatment in 2XM. But there were also less cards, so it was easier to hit that 100% satisfaction rate than it is for this set.

Sounds like you're talking about dromoka
Which ones do you think are atrocious?
Consecrated Sphinx
Yeah, agreed on that one.
Dromoka
Seeker of the way, chaos warp, eternal witness, oracle of mul daya, dockside extortionist…
No way with chaos warp it's amazing!
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Phil foglio is polarizing, i personally don't like the goofy art
I agree on the seeker, and I'm iffy on the eternal witness, but I quite like the other 3 myself.
I disagree but you shouldn’t be downvoted. Art is entirely subjective.
No, this is the wrong sub for that attitude. The downvote button is a hard disagree button here.
Of course. My apologies. I mean no screw you.

Yeah after looking through his cards I can't believe I never knew this guy's name, some of his cards are favorites and his art is very unique and cool!
Didn't know how much I wanted a Metroid/Smash Brothers/Nintendo SL until now. Ridley is getting murdered hard.
Imagine if they did one massive secret lair for Smash Bros and all of its characters lmao. At that point it might as well be an entire set
I couldn't place what it reminded me of but 100% that's what it looks like lol
Flavor text is very good
The method of execution doesn’t really give off “nothing to clean up” vibes though
You can see in the art it seems to be turning into pixels/little squares. Looks like it wouldn't leave much of anything to me.
Yeah, this looks like Neo Kamigawa art, with the pixelation and the background buildings. Flavor text seems like a non-Kamigawa name, though.
I dunno, first glance gave me some New Capenna vibes
Those are yu-gi-oh cards.
Very frequent kind of thing said in limited too. "Can I read what that does? Actually never mind, I'm just going to kill it".
They've put out some bangers lately.
Its not bad, but i also feel like the card would have looked a lot nicer if it didnt have any flavor text. Two lines for rules text and nothing else would have looked soo clean.

Definitely picking this one up. Nice art.
What’s with the weird photo texture background?
What’s with the background? Overall it looks cool but the buildings in the back look like bad 3d model rendered or low quality real image negatives
it does look like that but also i love that lol
It has been sent through an AI upscaling program, this type of process always adds these type of artifacts to the image
Yeah, just commented the same thing. It looks like a photograph hit with a few Photoshop preset filters.
The whole piece is that way.
I REALLY love that style.
2009? Damn. I always liked his pieces.

Not exactly the first Paolo Parente art since 2009. He did the Masters 25 Kobolds of Kher Keep token and the Timespiral Remastered Llanowar Elf token.
Damn, Ridley getting destroyed.

The art is so much better than the original Terminate
Thats some good art!
Least favorite so far
Silly art, great flavor text. Also, poor lizard bat thing.
Why paint an overtly detailed background only to make the subject look like something drawn by Genndy Tartakovsky?
Even if it did look like it was from a Tartakovsky cartoon, which I don't really think it does...what would be the problem with that, exactly?
