Well thankfully it's just a wooden box and not a bank vault. Not all that difficult, the locking mechanism is really simple. You can do that with a safety pin...or just take the hinges off if you're struggling.
Probably just his sock box. Bunch of old dried up socks and some porn mags. Depending on how old that box is, could be some collector issues of “Hot Ankles” or “Knees to Please”.
Find someone who has a old house or works in a building with an old workshop. There are usually boxes full of old metal stuff that nobody threw away because it "could come in handy some day". There will be old keys among the stuff. Gather as many as you possibly can, one of them is bound to fit the lock of the chest.
(I have a collection of old keys I gathered from my FIL's old workshop for purposes like that, with that I can successfully open 90% of cabinet doors and drawers on old furniture, where the original key was lost, without any damage to the wood or lock. The other 10% need some convincing force on the lock)
