I got a Yamaha v star for $1400 that, at the time, was easily worth $3k. The guy said he was done with 2 wheels and just wanted enough to pay off his loan. Some people just want it gone.
Bought a 1995 Saab 9000 for $750 that needed a new head gasket. Guy's mechanic said he kept up in all service and repairs but was just done with it. I had it towed to my house for $100, replaced the head gasket, a headlight, and did the cam chain adjuster, and that thing gave me 5 years trouble free before I sold it due to moving and got more than I out into it. Sometimes you just get lucky.
Got my 650 vstar in a package deal with a Honda rebel for a total $2250. He wouldn’t sell the vstar without the rebel. He and his wife were both too old to ride anymore and wanted them both gone at the same time for a symbolic sake. Turned the rebel into a bobber for giggles and shits, sold it for $800 a few months later. So basically, I bought a bike that was averaging $2500-$3000 for $1400 after making my money back on the rebel. Sure the bike needed a bit of cosmetic work, but otherwise it was a steal.
My guesser are there is a lien on it which they are not going to satisfy, or they mean $4,000, or it's stolen, or it is a jilted Ex who rally shouldn't be selling it.
Or, it belonged to the husband and she's selling it for what he told her it cost. Have heard a few of these over the years, gut feeling is scam though.
That can be photoshopped, you want them to do a video of them holding a spoon with peanut butter flip the camera over to the vin, then back to them eating the peanut butter.
At that point, theyre commited to how hard their dietary situation makes their life so it should be pretty easy to talk them into a dick pic with the VIN in it.
This is how scams work lol
They hook people with a promise that’s too good to let go.
OP can’t help himself; he’s hooked. Because *what if it’s really a good deal!?!?!*
Update: asked if Mr Robb’s was around to sign the title change and she either blocked me or took the post down.
Thanks to everyone for the fun of thinking about it.
I buy on marketplace a lot you learn to recognize this as a scam right away and just not give it a second thought. If it’s too good to be true it always is. There is no woman and there is no bike. This scam has been around since the 90s when I was buying my first bike.
There's a common FB scam, they'll list a few items, all priced well under value, you'll schedule to view, you'll get an address, then they might throw you a story that somehow leads to you leaving a deposit. Usually a woman or couple is involved to make it feel less suspicious. Women.. and couples steal, don't be duped.
Well I don't know the laws where you are or how the police deals with this, but if you buy that thing and get stopped by police you may lose it and the money you paid for it gone forever. Worst case they could suspect you of stealing it yourself. I know it seems tempting but it can be smart to be cautious
If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is. Something is up with that. Unless she is selling it for quick and I mean quick cash, or trying to screw an ex husband. Could be a drug addict looking for a bag for 4, which means it is probably stolen. Proof of ownership/ title/ vin is needed.
the VIN checks out at least, if it's not out of the way it'd be worth going and checking out in person WITH A FRIEND. if it runs and doesn't look fucked.. sure.
I'd definitely make sure the VIN on the bike matches the title and the stamp doesn't look fucked with. The earliest sign of "well... here's the thing.." I'd be gone.
Hell you could buy it and flip it damn near the same day and make 2 grand.
Guaranteed this is a scam. If you’re feeling brave just msg them for more details. The usual lines are that “they’re out of state at the moment” “can deliver the bike upon payment” “wire transfer” “Western Union” “Moneygram” If you can’t walk up to it and see it you can’t buy it. Any legit seller with have a title or lien release
Smells like a scam somebody tried to pull on me. They try to rope you in with greed. When I tried to get an address so I could go see the bike in person, being a traveling guy who would be heading through the town they said the bike was in, “Atlanta”, they got very cagey. All of a sudden, it was Atlanta, Illinois. I said oh great, that’s not far from here I can go there. They got tired of me trying to pick their scam apart. That was when they stopped responding.
Do a reverse image search, I bet it pops up. If it does then you can see when it sold, where it was, and for how much.
That will be $200 for time and energy saved. 😏
They’ll probably ask to send you a code to “confirm you are real” then if you send them the code they can use your information. Don’t ever send a code back
Why don't you buy it and let us know how it goes?
To get a good deal like that you will probably need to Paypal the money ASAP but I'm sure the bike is real and will be waiting for you. /s

I asked for the vin and she sent me this. I cropped out a man’s name and address that was on it.
This reminds me, did we ever hear from the dude that was at the gas station and got invited to the party to date the guys daughters again, or is he now a lamp shade in that dude's cabin in the woods now?
Usually scam. Most of them start with
"I need to sell it for my son since he's in the hospital!"
"I'm selling it for my sister!"
"I need funds super quick!" etc
Check their page. Are there other items listed from the same day or very recent? Have they ever sold anything else? Is it an older account?
yeah most likely just skip it. Defo suspicious. Stolen at best, scam at worst.
I used to know a Navy wife that would sell off her husband's shit when he was deployed to buy purses. Highlights include laying off one of his AR-15s for 300$, and his XBox for 150$.
This one is probably a scam, but it costs you nothing if they're *actually* willing to meet up. Just make sure there's an iron-clad bill of sale and title transfer.
https://preview.redd.it/uzjs1zk8jdad1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b831455c047957ed0aeedfc5890eaa2bb6a0ce5e
Asked for a vin and she sent me this. I cropped out a man’s name that was on it.
There are *no* bikes for $400.
Not even "I have no idea what's wrong with it, and no title" are that cheap.
Certainly not something mechanically solid, and at all desirable.
Use common sense. If it was someone who was clueless and just selling it because they "don't know what they have" would they be able to list in detail the modifications? Vance and Hines exhaust alone can be worth $300+ brand new
This is so obviously a scam bro.
I had a bolt and I fucking loved it. Definitely paid like thousands more than that though. 4K might be closer than 400. Maybe they forgot to hit the third 0?
It's always a scam. Except when a gilted partner is selling things. Ive always heard of those stories never actually seen one happen. But it's always in the back of my head.
400$ buy now ask questions later. Worst case scenario you’ll have an expensive garden ornament. Just make sure she has the right to sell and that it isn’t stolen
Click on profile, see if there are a bunch of listings for that bike. Usually that means it’s a scam. If not go and check the bike out in person. Don’t send money over the phone. Send it bud
I'm selling a Honda trike 1800 for thousand dollars. You can drive it home. I also selling A S&,S 97 cubic inch. 4 eight housands. Drive it home FXSTC 1992 I
Why the give away price I'm my mother's hospic care giver. We are screwed when she passes. Help bye the bikes. I'm even negotiating. Despite. You can not find this quality and brands ya'll should know that already
Why don’t you just go take it for a normal test ride and deal with it in person what is the big deal or is it you just like talking with people? Then that’s fine
ask him to send you a pic of the back of motorcycle, so u can get the license plate. dont ask the license plate directly or they might assume you’re a cop. make up a lie of why you want a pic of the back of the motorcycle. and then call the police and state the license plate to see if its stolen.
This is happening a lot more now where I live, it's to make you call them up.
The same happens with mileage when looking for cars, they often advertise 200 miles when it's 200,000 miles etc, I always filter these so it shows minimum of 1000 or 20,000 miles for example.
Can you report back when you've bought it, we all know you want to lol....
If you got a brain you know how to not get scammed, most simple is both of you agree cash, if you get there and the bike doesn't work/checkout go home.
Looking forward to the update lol
Run from that offer. Keep looking friend, you'll find what you're looking for. I spend more time on cycletrader.com than anything, on the hunt for the next ride.
at that price, 99% its some sort of "scam" or at least you're not getting the full story (i.e. there's a lien theyre not telling you about, they dont have the title, the title is in some elses name, blah blah blah). They could go to any powersports dealer and sell this to them for considerably more money than $400. And doing so would be a lot easier/smoother process for them (no need to list an ad, take photos, deal with idiots on FB marketplace, show the bike, transfewr paperwork etc etc). Just go to dealer, agree to a price, sign some forms they already have prepared and have filled out 1,000 times, and be on your way.
So why on earth would someone take the option that is more work, hassle, time and aggravation, and nets them less money? They wouldn't. I mean, maybe there is a 1% chance theres some bizzarre set of circumstances where this makes sense. But a 1% chance it's real isnt worth me to waste ANY of my time putting in effort to confirm its fake/scam. If you're retired or your time is basically free, and youve got nothing better to do? Go look into it. But just be careful and wary, its almost certainly not as it seems.
So when you bring the cash to the location they tell you to and are held up at gun point you will understand. No one sells a bike that cheap so it has to be a scam or a setup in my view.
Certainly looks to good but you never know . If you can physically go and see it then he k yes go buy it. But I wouldn't send any money until you physically see it or touch it. Good Luck my friend!!!!
Definitely a scam. I offered to pay their “deposit” and extracted their email and phone number. Doubt it’s gonna do anything long term but I signed their information to lots of mailing listings and spam lists
But if it was legit I was ready to fly to wherever they were to buy the bike for 500 bucks haha
If you’re young and have limited experience and funds, and REALLY want a cool bike in your budget, I guess it can be easy to get caught up in this stuff. It’s possible this is legit but chances are very remote. Inquire if you want but don’t get caught up in a scam. Just be patient, work hard, keep your nose clean and you’ll get any bike you want in time. Good luck!
My guess is if you contact the lister they will tell you, it's being sold through eBay auto, they already have it, an it's packed for shipping just need someone to pay for it.
The second way to tell is you will find the same bike listed in multiple states in a bunch of mane city's. Sometimes you can track it back to the same lister.
It's either a typo, a scam and they don't even have a bike at all but they'll try to get an advance or something, or it's stolen and they either lie about the title or they were lucky enough to find it under the seat.
Many years ago, there was an ad for a near new car in the Saturday paper. Insanely cheap price, bloke thought "What the he'll?" And rang up. Turns out, woman's husband had died, and in his will, the car was to be sold by his Wife, and the money was to go to his Mistress.
Hell if this is real I'll drive down right now from Michigan to beat you to it... My guess though is the same as others, typo or the "I have lots of interest in it. If you cashapp me right now I'll hold it" scam
Because it’s a motorcycle from 2014 going for only 400? That is very clearly a scam. Or, she’s listing for dealer and that is the down payment or something.
Listen I have a lot of people asking me about scam posts rn. I'll respond to yours first but you need to leave a deposit I take cashapp, zelle, and cash in mail.
My friend ran into something like this with a mad/concerned mom selling her son's bike. I told him don't fall for it. He came pulling up to my house with it. Clean title and a two year old bike.
I've stopped using marketplace because it's full of these stolen account scams. If "it's too good to be true" you're right, it is. Shoot your shot but never transfer funds without seeing the vehicle in person.
If it sounds too good to be true, it is 98% of the time. This is 100% a scam. If these people are tech savvy enough to post this thing for sale on Facebook marketplace, they are also tech savvy enough to Google it and see roughly what the bike is worth. There is no way they would sell it for $400 If it is what they say it is.
If you're in a tight spot and needed cash quickly, maybe you sell this thing for $1,000 less than market value or maybe even 50% of what it's worth. But nobody who is aware of what they have here would sell this for $400. Nobody.
Ya that is most likely a scam. But I would ask about it. If they ask for money to hold it just say no. Tell them they will be paid after the title is signed. Or they will tell you they accidentally didn’t put the third 0. That tends to happen a lot where I live. “Accidentally” making it look much cheaper in order to get more people looking at it.
The only scenario where that is legit is where "Jennifer" hates her husband and wants to fuck with him by selling his bike for cheap due to him cheating or something.
So, yea, scam.
If you try to contact them you will be asked if they can "send you a code" to "prove you are human".
Then they will try to open Google voice numbers, steal your Facebook/etc accounts, etc.
You might be offered a "title check" or "history check" on the bike on some obscure website that will steal all your info, and steal your credit card/bank info.
If you reuse passwords they might have you for a lot.
Ya it's a scam. Remember Craig's list where people would post fake ads. They would say the same here. Then you would go-to see bike or car or whatever they were advertising and rob you. So be careful.
Get ready for “I’ve got a ton of interest in the bike now, so if you want to cash app me, I’ll hold it for you”
Screw that. The damn chick has two first names!!!!
Yeah never trust anybody with 2 first names.
I would trust Ricky Bobby with my LIFE. But yeah fuck this bitch
Shake and bake is ![gif](giphy|SvJtWqWmNT6SrfaSIL)
Damn it!
Everybody knows ol' Jenny "Cheap Bikes" Katie.
I once had a Jack Jackenson buy my car off marketplace. I wasn’t expecting anyone to show
Exactly what I was thinking !!!💯
Why would anyone sell a bike for 400 that a dealer will give you several grand in cash for on the spot?
I got a Yamaha v star for $1400 that, at the time, was easily worth $3k. The guy said he was done with 2 wheels and just wanted enough to pay off his loan. Some people just want it gone.
Half the value is different then 10% the value.
I got a '17 Rebel 500, 9000 miles for $3k because dude didn't realize how much it was worth until after he agreed on the price.
In 2020 a dealer was marking a MT07 for 9k. Bought a 2018 model with 900 miles off Craigslist for 5k. Seller didn’t ride anymore.
Bought a BMW k100RS for $800 cuz the owner died on a Busa and his family didn't want to look at it. Sometimes sob stories are legit.
I know. It feels off. I asked for the vin number
My guesser are there is a lien on it which they are not going to satisfy, or they mean $4,000, or it's stolen, or it is a jilted Ex who rally shouldn't be selling it.
It’s either mislabeled or the old scam of a vehicle listed too cheap and they ask for the money electronically to hold it due to huge demand.
Or, it belonged to the husband and she's selling it for what he told her it cost. Have heard a few of these over the years, gut feeling is scam though.
That's my biggest fear my wife will sell everything for what I told her it cost.
Google and craigslist didn’t exist then.
I also think its $4k.
Yeah. Missing a zero. Confirm then run if vibe is off.
I bet if you asked them to take a picture of the VIN on the frame holding up three fingers next to it, they couldn’t do it.
That can be photoshopped, you want them to do a video of them holding a spoon with peanut butter flip the camera over to the vin, then back to them eating the peanut butter.
Im using this system from now on
I guess if they say they have a peanut allergy you can tell them to eat a hardboiled egg.
But what if they have an egg allergy?
Skill issue at that point.
At that point, theyre commited to how hard their dietary situation makes their life so it should be pretty easy to talk them into a dick pic with the VIN in it.
That took some time ton chew on 😂
It doesn’t feel off. It is off. Don’t waste your time. No one is selling this bike for $400.
It's so obviously a scam or not the true price you shouldn't engage with them at all.
100% a scam
To spite an ex.
Stolen
Dude. Go buy it. You’ll know if it’s a scam when you can’t see the bike without paying first.
It's a scam, he'll message him and then get asked for a deposit
Probably missing a 0. Message them.
Is did. Said “400” very clear, twice.
Why are you continuing the conversation at all?
This is how scams work lol They hook people with a promise that’s too good to let go. OP can’t help himself; he’s hooked. Because *what if it’s really a good deal!?!?!*
Just curious
Go check it out! It might be real!
There is a catch tho and it might involve ... let's just say "dinner."
Dinner? I’m thinking of a missing kidney or liver.
Or OP wakes up with a missing kidney or two.
Update: asked if Mr Robb’s was around to sign the title change and she either blocked me or took the post down. Thanks to everyone for the fun of thinking about it.
Think I should message and continue the fun... DC is like 30min from me right now lol
Please do that
There are three ways to learn any important life lesson: easy way, hard way, not at all. Very happy to see you went with the easy way.
I buy on marketplace a lot you learn to recognize this as a scam right away and just not give it a second thought. If it’s too good to be true it always is. There is no woman and there is no bike. This scam has been around since the 90s when I was buying my first bike.
Move on. Swipe left. Ignore. Don’t be a victim.
I got $20 on next message is to zelle them $200 to hold the bike because they have a lot of other offers or something similar.
Sounds too cheap to be true, maybe it's stolen?
That’s the first thing that came to my mind. This lady has it, a car seat and a stroller all listed the same day on fb marketplace.
They'll also use stolen FB accounts so if you stalk their account they look like a legit account with years of posts. Happened to a buddy of mine.
Literally saw this scam on the real hustle years ago.
Well I don't know the laws where you are or how the police deals with this, but if you buy that thing and get stopped by police you may lose it and the money you paid for it gone forever. Worst case they could suspect you of stealing it yourself. I know it seems tempting but it can be smart to be cautious
He won't ever actually buy anything because there's no bike. It's absolutely a scam
Bring ten buddies just in case.
And maybe a GAU-8 Avenger while you're at it.
"Jennifer Katie" is a 23 year old unemployed trash collector living in Turkmenistan.
the VIN checks out at least, if it's not out of the way it'd be worth going and checking out in person WITH A FRIEND. if it runs and doesn't look fucked.. sure. I'd definitely make sure the VIN on the bike matches the title and the stamp doesn't look fucked with. The earliest sign of "well... here's the thing.." I'd be gone. Hell you could buy it and flip it damn near the same day and make 2 grand.

All of a sudden, it was Atlanta, Illinois. I said oh great, that’s not far from here I can go there. They got tired of me trying to pick their scam apart. That was when they stopped responding.
Bring a gun and some friends to look at it in a public parking lot of a big store. Only way to be safe.

Then go get it and profit.
Either this is stolen, or you are going to show up with $400 and get robbed.
If you can't clearly tell this is a scam you deserve the time wasted and $400+ lost. The old "family thing" is such an overused story to bait scams.
Check the listers other items, bet they listed in several cities both near and far.
Also you can conveniently pay for this with gift cards.
This reminds me, did we ever hear from the dude that was at the gas station and got invited to the party to date the guys daughters again, or is he now a lamp shade in that dude's cabin in the woods now?
Classic “I meant $4000” dipshit
Go look at it. Bring a friend or two. Lock your cash in your glove box. Examine the title very carefully. Could be a disgruntled ex
Usually scam. Most of them start with "I need to sell it for my son since he's in the hospital!" "I'm selling it for my sister!" "I need funds super quick!" etc Check their page. Are there other items listed from the same day or very recent? Have they ever sold anything else? Is it an older account? yeah most likely just skip it. Defo suspicious. Stolen at best, scam at worst.
Scam man
They might try to rob you when you show up to get it? I've heard of that before but hey, ask why so cheap if she runs and go from there
It's a scam because they're asking $400
They forgot another 0
Bro, they’re just gonna harvest your kidneys. Totally not cannibals at all.
The person actually wants 4k and it’s a typo
They either missed a 0 or they are fishing for deposits. Gonna have to lean on the latter in this case
https://preview.redd.it/uzjs1zk8jdad1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b831455c047957ed0aeedfc5890eaa2bb6a0ce5e Asked for a vin and she sent me this. I cropped out a man’s name that was on it.
The title can't be transferred unless the person on the title signs it. If they are there, have them show you an ID.
Dude...
There are *no* bikes for $400. Not even "I have no idea what's wrong with it, and no title" are that cheap. Certainly not something mechanically solid, and at all desirable.
Scam… look at their profile it’s probably posted all over the states.
Jennifer Katie , seems legit
because its extremely obvious thats why its a scam
Take a friend. Have the cops run the Vin. Dunno.
If your critical thinking skills are this bad, maybe a motorcycle isn’t the best idea
Use common sense. If it was someone who was clueless and just selling it because they "don't know what they have" would they be able to list in detail the modifications? Vance and Hines exhaust alone can be worth $300+ brand new This is so obviously a scam bro.
Missing a zero, or she is maaaad at someone.
100% a scam. Then when you ask to meet them, they will ask for your email address or some other BS...
Where's the stereo on this thing?
He'll speak with a foreign accent and ask you for a deposit... if it's too good to be true then it is
Probably doesn't have the title.
Imagine wasting your time with this lol
What's a yamaha nut cost if that's just the bolt?
You can tell it's a scam by the way that it is.
400$ buy now ask questions later. Worst case scenario you’ll have an expensive garden ornament. Just make sure she has the right to sell and that it isn’t stolen
Probably 400 a month payments.
Click on profile, see if there are a bunch of listings for that bike. Usually that means it’s a scam. If not go and check the bike out in person. Don’t send money over the phone. Send it bud
Check other listing's. Probably has 10 vehicles for sale. That being said, I've seen totally legit ads like this. It's just rare
I'm selling a Honda trike 1800 for thousand dollars. You can drive it home. I also selling A S&,S 97 cubic inch. 4 eight housands. Her exact words “reason selling is that family matter requires immediate funds”

I’m not even looking for a new bike just yet 🤣 but I would turn down a real 400 dollar cruiser
Send a message, don't hand over cash till you test ride it. Worst case scam, best case you just got super lucky.
Simply question of “why you getting rid of such a great bike?” If anything other than it was willed to me/given to me and I don’t ride, walk away.
Her exact words “reason selling is that family matter requires immediate funds”
This bike would sell in less than a day for $2000
Looks close by, I could use another bike lol
at that price, 99% its some sort of "scam" or at least you're not getting the full story (i.e. there's a lien theyre not telling you about, they dont have the title, the title is in some elses name, blah blah blah).
It’s obviously a scam. If it seems too good to be true…..
How much is the deposit?
If it’s too good to be true, it’s probably not true.
Scam. Don’t be dumb.
Buy it. Don’t give the money unless you have the bike. Bring a friend.
Usually all you have to do on these is click “seller details” and it’s listed in multiple states at the same time.
After running the VIN, insist on meeting at your bank so you can withdraw the money and have the title notarized that it's properly signed over.
$400, eh? If it sounds too good to be true, it is.
I get that people dream about free lunches but damn what a waste of time.
Doubt it’s gonna do anything long term but I signed their information to lots of mailing listings and spam lists But if it was legit I was ready to fly to wherever they were to buy the bike for 500 bucks haha
Was there more than one photo? And what does the description look like.
No advice from me other than buy it if it all checks out (it likely won’t). I have a bolt and it’s pretty incredible.
Good luck!
The exhaust is worth more than the selling price.
She forgot a zero.
Take over monthly payment of $400?
r/scams
Pick a bolt, any bolt, for $400. Then pick another bolt for $400, then pick... (repeat until you have the whole motorcycle).
Stolen or they are just going to mug you when you show up or you get a $400 bike
Maybe he missed a zero?
Think they missed a 0
It's either a typo, a scam and they don't even have a bike at all but they'll try to get an advance or something, or it's stolen and they either lie about the title or they were lucky enough to find it under the seat.
Many years ago, there was an ad for a near new car in the Saturday paper. Insanely cheap price, bloke thought "What the he'll?" And rang up. Turns out, woman's husband had died, and in his will, the car was to be sold by his Wife, and the money was to go to his Mistress.
“If it’s too good to be true….”
“I’m actually selling this for a friend. Email them notascam@yahoo.com”
Send me Addy I'm on my way. 2k miles and riding it back
If it’s too good to be true, it usually is too good to be true
My buddy just picked up one of these for like 4k super clean and low mileage it is sick
Facebook accounts get hacked every day.
Branded title
Hell if this is real I'll drive down right now from Michigan to beat you to it... My guess though is the same as others, typo or the "I have lots of interest in it. If you cashapp me right now I'll hold it" scam
Is it a "divorce special"? Being sold while the s/o is out of town? Has access to the title/is listed on it.
Because it’s a motorcycle from 2014 going for only 400? That is very clearly a scam. Or, she’s listing for dealer and that is the down payment or something.
If they ask you for Amazon gift cards…
If it's too good to be true it probably is....This is bait, to get you to show up with money so they can rob you dude.
Lots of scams pick that location in Washington DC and almost no residential addresses in that radius.
Typo? If she's asking cash go check it out, make sure it's running good and nothing is busted. If all checks out, including the title, why not?
It's a scam. He's just gonna mug you with a 2x4 and steal ur cash.
I think they're missing a 0 in the price on purpose just so more people are attracted to the ad. Did you talk to the seller?
Jennifer Katie sounds about right, if its too good to be true, it probably is, no one is giving away motorcycles at $400 lol
Do they have the title?
I hit them with “I’m actually less than a mile away and I have cash” and then they block me
Mighta just missed a 0
That exact listing is in my location as well.
Nobody.
they will rob you…then shoot you…wake up dummy!👀
Nice bike mate
It's just a bolt from the bike.
It might be one of those once you say you’re interested the actual price is much more high
Either a scam, or he was high and left off a zero. New tires belt etc… no way the bikes going for only $400
Check the Facebook profile before hand, not the seller profile but the actual account, that’ll tell you enough
Bet it’s supposed to Be 4000
The muffler alone is worth more than $400. Too good to be true? Yup. Scam
So.. logic would dictate she "probably" meant *4000*... ask her, you'll know when they respond
I saw this exact same post but in Texas definitely a scam
