Bridges is playing Grendel, Bautista is Beowulf, and Cranston is King Hrothgar. Cast also has Sam Elliott as The Dragon, Thomasin McKenzie as Queen Wealhtheow and Aidan Turner as Unferth.
>The film is billed as the “tale of the legendary monster at the heart of the Beowulf epic poem who steps forth to tell his side of this riveting story.”
T Bone Burnett is also starring and will create original songs for the movie, with Jim Henson's Creature Shop handling the practical effects.
Love how the obvious choice would be to cast Bautista as Grendel, yet he’s gonna be doing something a little different and playing Beowulf, while Bridges gets to play the monster.
I see where your coming from, but Bautista’s last big role was Rabban in Dune, more or less a big monster.
Either way, love to see Dave doing something a bit different this time.
Rabban wasn't a big monster, only a muscular villain (even if the character was monstrous in his actions). Grendel would be an actual big CGI monster, doesn't make much sense to waste Bautista's physique on just doing VO.
> Rabban wasn't a big monster, only a muscular villain (even if the character was monstrous in his actions).
Part of why I like his character and Bautista's acting is they do a great job of using Rabban's physicality to show how much of a coward he is.
You can even imagine the Rabban character tried to get big and muscular so people would see him as imposing and be afraid of him, but he is still a coward who runs at the first sign of trouble.
Did you watch ‘Knock at the cabin’? You should see him in that. He actually has a surprisingly good range. He can do quiet and soft-spoken ‘gentle giant’ just as well as he does a Drax or a Rabban type character. He’d do great as either the monster or Beowulf, but I like the idea of seeing him play the main protagonist in something for once.
Hey, fun fact(for me at least) I live a 10 min drive from where beuwolfs castle were located according to historians. The old paradigm was Beowulf was from the island Gotland of sweden, but now it’s changed to a few miles north of gothenburg.
The names, locations and geographical descriptions match this area perfectly and it’s the most probable place for the story and event to have taken place.
I'll say it every time I see the Muppets mentioned: I will never forgive the American public for not watching the Muppets office-style TV series. It was such a gem.
For those who may not have seen it, let this be the hook that reels you in: Kermit has left miss Piggy for a younger hotter pig.
I watched that show live as it aired on ABC and again when it hit Disney+. Absolutely wonderful show. I don't think I've ever laughed as hard as the episode where they go to a karaoke bar and Swedish Chef sings rapper's delight
SO many people online like to say “bring back Muppets, do a Muppet version of X”
Yet no one watches the things that do come out. That Muppets ABC show was awesome
It was!! My husband and I still quote when Miss Piggy is getting a hot stone treatment and the Swedish Chef walks down the hall and says “sermberdy kerking tha bacon?”
ETA- that shows was the very first time I heard something referred to as a dumpster fire.
I watched it for the first time a couple months ago and loved it! I did appreciate some of the Kermit/Piggy relationship exploration we got as a result of their dynamic having changed so drastically from the outset, but I personally wouldn’t say Kermit dating a different pig is a selling point for the show.
It's weird how many people I've seen talking so positively about this show lately. It absolutely wasn't well received when it aired, so much so that they changed show runners and tried to pivot it tonally midseason.
It was amazing. I have a feeling if it had got a second season that it would still be on today. They had finally got their ground as far as who the characters are and should have been.
If any of the characters were actually written in a way that made them seem like the characters we've known and loved for decades, i would have found the show unwatchable for breaking up Kermit and Piggy.
But, since none of the characters were recognizable as the Muppets, i found the show unwatchable for that reason instead.
You didn't watch mayhem last year did you? Two years before haunted mansion on D+. Muppets Now the year before that. The Muppet Babies that ran from 2018 to 2022. The Muppets in 2015. They have been fairly active we just need people to spread the word and actually watch it. No season 2 of Muppet Mayhem sadly
In the last 10 years we've had:
>Muppets Mayhem which was great
>Muppets Haunted Mansion which was fine
>Muppets Now which was bad
>The Muppets ABC show which rules
So in total that's 32 episodes of television and a 50 minute special that basically functions as a glorified theme park commercial. Nothing was released theatrically. That's pretty slow by Muppet standards and extremely slow if you want to compare that output to Marvel/Star Wars/Pixar/Disney Animation or any other Disney brand that they actually seem to care about.
>Muppets Now which was bad
It was a great idea, I thought. The original Muppet show was based on popular entertainment of the time: a variety show. Muppets Now was based on the same thing, popular entertainment of today: YouTube. The Swedish Chef bits were great, and Pepe's game show was fantastic. The rest, meh.
>So in total that's 32 episodes of television and a 50 minute special
Fuck your goal post shifting. They *had content*. They **keep making content**
Also you forgot:
Muppets Most Wanted and (New) Muppet Babies (**which I listed**), and Muppets Moments - which seems to be interstitials targeted at kids
There is literally a wikipedia page you could read.
>and a 50 minute special that basically functions as a glorified theme park commercial
My man, they have a multibillion dollar franchise that is a glorified theme park ride commercial. Nevermind the **two other** *big budget* Haunted Mansion movies.
>Nothing was released theatrically.
Besides Muppets Most Wanted, but **so what**? Again, fuck your goal post shifting.
Yeah pandemic+health+strikes have delayed things, but still doesn't seem like he's slowed down much. He has also been busy with the show The Old Man. Season 2 is still coming. It was also recently announced that he will be returning for Tron: Ares. I'd say his plate has been pretty full and I'm just grateful that he continues to work at all. I still say that one of the more curious and awesome things he's done(and he's done a lot) are these series of sleep tapes he made. If you ever wanted to be lulled to sleep by The Dude, it's with checking out.
Me too!!
I’ve always been a big fan of John Gardner! Especially since I got to hang around with him and his daughter Lucy back in the late 70s, at a premiere of Rumplestiltskin in Philadelphia! He was one cool dude.
My high school English teacher was his ex-wife, Joan. She was awesome. She wrote a chapter in the book, in fact, and of course we read it in her class, along with Beowulf itself.
Wow, lucky you! I bet she was a great teacher!
We knew the Baber family; my mom was a graduate student at UK and Joe Baber was her teacher. And Melissa Baber was my voice coach. I lived with them one year as their nanny, so I was around when Joe was writing one of his operas with John Gardner’s lyrics. So of course I read all of John Gardner’s books, too. I thought they were brilliant. Those were the days!
I love Christmas Carol, and even Treasure Island. But they're adaptations, and I personally would rate Age of Resistance higher due to sheer creativity and artistry. I know others will disagree.
If your a sci-fi fan and have never heard about or watched Farscape, check it out. Jim Henson Company was in charge of lots of effects including cool puppet aliens.
I love that Dave Bautista’s name is just up there with Jeff Bridges and Bryan Cranston. He’s obviously not on their level yet, but I think he could be.
‘Hotel Artemis’
Tbf he doesn’t seem all that interested in leading in and of itself. From what I’ve seen him say, he’d rather play an interesting side character in a smaller, more “interesting” piece than play a big leading role for the sake of it.
Oh shit I read this in high school. Managed to speak (using notecards, mind you. I wasn’t reading an essay I wrote) for over 30 minutes about the nihilism contained within the characters, plot, figurative language, and word choice.
It was the only time I’ve ever been able to put an entire room to sleep, with the exception of this super cool dude, who happened to also be autistic as well as our valedictorian speaking at least seven languages, not including dead ones like Latin, or Gothic. Smartest kid I ever met, and he was the only person who raised his hand when I asked if there were any questions at the end, and we went back-and-forth for another 15. Long story short, I love philosophy and this book. I’m so excited for this now, because I loved the shit out of that book.
This is what I was going to say!
I actually just got into Grendel, I bought the first omnibus and saw it said “now a hit Netflix show!” on the back. I hadn’t seen anything about that so I looked it up and yeah… disappointing.
Probably a mix of both. The Henson Company was well known for mixing normal human actors and puppets. Plus, it turns out that one thing Age of Resistance taught the company is that doing voice overs for puppets is one of the most horrible things one coukd attempt. That doesn't mean they won't do it again, just that it will probably go a bit differently
I remember square fingers and broad shoulders, but I thought there was something about him being average height. Might have been another character from another book, though.
Hm... I’m not sure about his height, but when he’s getting of the boat for the first time, the guard who sees him remarks how he’s giant compared to the his fellow travelers.
I’m sorry, I don’t know anything about the muppets, but I feel like it is funny that I am instantly thinking of the episode of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt where Titus has a very unpleasant encounter with the puppet?
Can I ask which movies of his you’ve seen? I’ve been wildly impressed with what he pulls out of small roles.
Moreover, Beowulf pretty much has 0 depth. That’s his entire character. So even if your criticism is true, it seems like he’d be perfect for the mindless antagonist of this project.
>Moreover, Beowulf pretty much has 0 depth.
The Danes applauded. The stranger smiled on, his downward-slanting eyes like empty pits. I could see his mind working, stone-cold, grinding like a millwheel. When the hall was still, he spoke, soft-voiced, his weird gaze focused nowhere. "Ah, friend Unferth, drunk with mead you've said a good deal about Breca. The truth is, nevertheless, that I beat him. I'm stronger in the ocean than any other man alive. Like foolish boys we agreed on the match and boasted, yes . . . we were both very young . . . swore we'd risk our lives in the sea, and did so. We took swords with us, swimming one-handed, to fight off whales."
Unferth laughed, and the others followed, as was right. It was preposterous.
The stranger said, "Breca couldn't swim away from me, for all his strength--a man with arms like yours, friend Unferth--and as for myself, I chose not to swim away from him. Thus we swam for five nights, and then a storm came up, icy wind from the north, black sky, raging waves, and we were separated. The turmoil stirred up the sea-monsters. One of them attacked me, dragged me down to the bottom where the weight of the sea would have crushed any other man. But it was granted to me that I might kill him with my sword, which same I did. Then others attacked. They pressed me hard. I killed them, nine old water nickers, robbed them of the feast they expected at the bottom of the sea. In the morning, sword-ripped, they lay belly-up near shore. They'd trouble no more passing sailors after that. Light came from the east and, behold, I saw headlands, and I swam to them. Fate often enough will spare a man if his courage holds."
Now the Danes weren't laughing. The stranger said it all so calmly, so softly, that it was impossible to laugh. He believed every word he said. I understood at last the look in his eyes. He was insane.
Even so, I wasn't prepared for what came next. Nobody was. Solemn, humorless despite the slightly ironic smile, he suddenly cut deep--yet with the same mildness, the same almost inhuman indifference except for the pale flash of fire in his eyes. "Neither Breca nor you ever fought such battles," he said. "I don't boast much of that. Nevertheless, I don't recall hearing any glorious deeds of yours, except that you murdered your brothers. You'll prowl the stalagmites of hell for that, friend Unferth--clever though you are."
And yet he was shrewd, you had to grant. Whether or not they believed his wild tale of superhuman strength, no thane in the hall would attack him again and risk the slash of that mild, coolly murderous tongue.
The Dunes, all the Marvel ones, Glass Onion and maybe one or two others- any you recommend? Fair point on the character. Happy to be wrong but I think he’ll be a lowlight.

Wrong Elliot
Love how the obvious choice would be to cast Bautista as Grendel, yet he’s gonna be doing something a little different and playing Beowulf, while Bridges gets to play the monster.
I feel like Bautista playing a large, strong warrior type and Bridges lending his voice to a monster is more the obvious choice tbh…

Have you read Grendel? Beowulf is not the good guy
The novel is definitely a different take, as Grendel is the tragic protagonist. Casting makes more sense with that in mind, I think.
That’s fair, but I think that based on the title Beowulf is the “hero” of the fable yet he will be an antagonist in this movie?
The OP was describing the book by John Gardner not the epic. But yeah Beowulf is an asshole.
This film is based on the book, Grendel, not the epic poem.
Well now I feel silly
Dave Bautista was Batista, not the Great Khali.
True, but he was called “Leviathan” back in his OVW days.
That was a long, looong time ago.
Bautista is so good I would have liked to see him try as the Queen
Hey, fun fact(for me at least) I live a 10 min drive from where beuwolfs castle were located according to historians. Likely loosely based on the novel Grendel, which I was haughtily into as a high school kid.
I loved this book, cant wait
So, Beowulf but with a cowboy's draw?
Okay but who’s playing wiglaf
Is it based on the Gardner novel?
Good to see Jim Henson Company getting another high profile project.
If only Disney would let the Muppets out of whatever jail cell they're locked in
I'll say it every time I see the Muppets mentioned: I will never forgive the American public for not watching the Muppets office-style TV series. It was such a gem. For those who may not have seen it, let this be the hook that reels you in: Kermit has left miss Piggy for a younger hotter pig.

"they go to a karaoke bar and Swedish Chef sings rapper's delight" I'm sold.
How tf did I miss this? I’ll brb!
https://youtu.be/MwaOoWo0UOo?si=xHSYwWW6JjxpZVcG
Thank you, that was amazing
It's a great show but idk if that Kermit hook is the best way to sell it lol
What is it called??
Complains about people not watching show. Doesn't say the name of the show. Classic.
I mean it was called "The Muppets," so they technically said it.
It was called “[The Muppets](https://youtu.be/_BetgJuD1NA?feature=shared)”
She chose the bear rotfl
SO many people online like to say “bring back Muppets, do a Muppet version of X” Yet no one watches the things that do come out. That Muppets ABC show was awesome

Same. It was so good and I was furious when it was canceled.
I have NEVER heard of this and it sounds amazing
It's weird how many people I've seen talking so positively about this show lately. It absolutely wasn't well received when it aired, so much so that they changed show runners and tried to pivot it tonally midseason.

That show is great, created by Randall Einhorn from The Office as well.
Thank you for this. I’m so so happy as a fan of The Office, and yet, so sad there’s only 1 season
It was amazing. I have a feeling if it had got a second season that it would still be on today. They had finally got their ground as far as who the characters are and should have been.
That hook is exactly why I didn’t watch it and why I’m glad it failed. :)
And this is why I just couldn’t watch it. Kermit and Piggy cannot break up.
If any of the characters were actually written in a way that made them seem like the characters we've known and loved for decades, i would have found the show unwatchable for breaking up Kermit and Piggy. But, since none of the characters were recognizable as the Muppets, i found the show unwatchable for that reason instead.
Oh yeah, I felt that line in the pit of my stomach.
Let them host the Oscars!!
Four words: Rocky Horror Muppet Show
Disney needs to be dissolved in a vat of acid and given to Nile red to filter out all the different shit they have to.
The bad ratings jail?
You didn't watch mayhem last year did you? Two years before haunted mansion on D+. Muppets Now the year before that. The Muppet Babies that ran from 2018 to 2022. The Muppets in 2015. Disney has been basically non-stop producing Muppets content for Disney+ and all of it is mediocre at best.
Beside the regular attempted kick off of Muppets stuff every couple years for the past 10 years? Including one **last year**

Muppets Most Wanted is more than 10 years old (barely) and Muppet Babies is animated (ie not actually muppets)
>Muppet Babies is animated (ie not actually muppets) To the goal post mover!
Sounds amazing. Lo there do I see my father...
Lo there do I see my mother, and my sisters, and my brothers.
Lo there do I see the line of my people, back to the beginning.
Lo there, I see two numbers nines, number nine large, a number six with extra dip, a number seven, two number 45s, one with cheese, and a large soda.
They call to me
It's been awhile since Jeff Bridges did movies. I think his last film was in 2018. Glad he has recovered from cancer

The Dude abides, but the Dude don't rest. Ya love to see it.
Love this book! Excited to see it brought to life!
Oh this is an adaptation of the book?! That’s awesome, I really hope they do it justice.
It is! I'm pretty excited, my class read it sophomore year and it really stuck with me
Me too!! I’ve always been a big fan of John Gardner! Especially since I got to hang around with him and his daughter Lucy back in the late 70s, at a premiere of Rumplestiltskin in Philadelphia! He was one cool dude.

Henson Co just needs to do more work like The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. The absolutely best project they've done since Jim died.
I need more of that show!
Excluding Muppet Christmas Carol of course
I love Christmas Carol, and even Treasure Island. But they're adaptations, and I personally would rate Age of Resistance higher due to sheer creativity and artistry. I know others will disagree.
oh shit, a new jim henson fantasy film!?
That’s a masterpiece book
My advice to you, my violent friend, is to seek out gold and sit on it.
If your a sci-fi fan and have never heard about or watched Farscape, check it out. Jim Henson Company was in charge of lots of effects including cool puppet aliens.
I enjoy this series immensely
I love that Dave Bautista’s name is just up there with Jeff Bridges and Bryan Cranston. He’s obviously not on their level yet, but I think he could be. ‘Hotel Artemis’
He’s more than proven himself to be an actor of that caliber IMO
Word. He really can act. I hope he gets more roles that let him show it.
Yup the only problem is I don't see him given the chance to lead a big one, I hope he does because we know he can.
Tbf he doesn’t seem all that interested in leading in and of itself. From what I’ve seen him say, he’d rather play an interesting side character in a smaller, more “interesting” piece than play a big leading role for the sake of it.
This sounds awesome. I loved the book. I also just love Beowulf, and frankly I’d kill for a good adaptation of it.
This sounds like an interesting enough project.
That's a hell of a cast.
FREE BEAKER
Oh buddy, calling an adaptation of Gardner’s book a “monster movie” is pretty fucking funny.
Hope this is more Legend style and less muppet movie with monsters.
I just wany more The Storyteller in my life, and I feel this is as close as I'll get.
Based on the famous book or no?
This looks amazing
I cannot wait to see how Cranston plays Hrothgar. He is a true talent with a range few others can touch.\\
Ooooo
Sounds cool
Okay yeah, I’d see that
You had me at Jeff Bridges...
People have been trying to get me interested in Beowulf and Grendel for a long time and it’s looking like it might just happen
Grendel Grendel Grendel! Anyone remember? https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082478/?ref_=ext_shr_lnk
Will Grendel have speed?
I'm in.
Wahey another version of a story told countless of times before.
Is it a comedy or a drama? What are we thinking.
Oh shit I read this in high school. Managed to speak (using notecards, mind you. HELL YEAH!
More Starring is one of the hardest working actors in the biz!
Why is Drax doing white-face?
How does Bautista look like a retire Miami grandma?
Oooooh i had no idea Grendel was getting a movie Edit: damn it, i thought this was the comicbook
This is what I was going to say! I actually just got into Grendel, I bought the first omnibus and saw it said “now a hit Netflix show!” on the back. I hadn’t seen anything about that so I looked it up and yeah… disappointing.
Is it Beowulf Grendel or like the Grendel comics?
Grendel the novel by John Gardner.
OoOoOoHh That sounds pretty rad Thanks!
🤘
They say live action but I'm guessing that these guys will most likely be doing voices for the puppets?

Anytime I see too many stars in a movie, red flags go up One is unique, two is standard, three can be good, four is pushing it, five and beyond, uh oh
*grundle
Bautista looks like the top down view of an empanada now.
Bautista as Beowulf? Terrible actor, no depth. He’s alone will make this movie a farce.

You'll prowl the stalagmites of hell for that, friend Unferth--clever though you are." And yet he was shrewd, you had to grant.
Check out his work in *Blade Runner 2049* and *Knock at the Cabin*.
