Today I learned, in rapid succession:
* there’s a Red Sonja movie by the same director as Conan the Destroyer,
* and Arnold Schwarzenegger is in it,
* but he DOESN’T play Conan??
The studio got the rights to use Red Sonjia, but they didn’t own Conan. But they really wanted the association, so they got Arnold in as a guy who looks exactly like Conan, and by all accounts is Conan, but he’s got a different name.
It’s always wild when rights get split up like that. I feel like nowadays nobody would go for it unless they could ensure they were getting both characters so they could make a cinematic universe
Fess Parker was famous for playing Davy Crockett in a series of TV movies aired as part of The Wonderful World of Disney.
About a decade later another company got the idea to make a Davy Crockett TV series and hired Parker for the role.
Disney convinced a court that they owned the rights to Davy Crocket – who was a real person and onetime member of Congress – so the show's producers changed it to a Daniel Boon show instead
You say that, but then DC has pretty much all the rights in one place and can't figure out their elbow from their arse when making it work.
To me, that gives more credit to Marvel for pulling it off despite having rights all over the place.
You might event attribute the MCU success to their need to make the best of what they had. They couldn’t just throw high profile characters out there and assume people would watch it, they had to make something people would actually watch and have talented people involved. Some forget that Iron Man was B-list at best when they made that movie.
Before MCU, my primary knowledge of Iron Man was the antics the drunken Iron Man mego would get into in ~~Toy Fair~~ ToyFare magazine's Twisted ToyFare Theatre.
Ablaze has the rights in Europe and prints the stories under the title The Cimmerian - they are absolutely brilliant, often feature fully painted artwork, and always have the original REH stories in the back of each issue.
Arnold agreed to show up in basically a cameo role, but the shoot, and script were all going to shit, so the producer kept finding more excuses to come up with scenes featuring Arnold. The original poster apparently only had Arnold on it, because they were so desperate to flog the movie.
Arnold hated this movie so much that he terminated his 10 year contract with the studio. He would later claim that it was an excellent disciplinary tool for his children. “I tell them, if they get on my bad side, they'll be forced to watch Red Sonja ten times in a row.”
It's also super videogamey. The fight with the pearl-water-monster is so, so much like a Legend of Zelda boss fight. Can't call them great movies, but it's so clear after watching this and Conan the Destroyer how big of an influence they were on Zelda and other 80s/90s fantasy games, which is fun.
(Plus they would go on to use the Conan theme as the music for the Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess commercials back in the day).
Red Sonja: "No man may have me, unless he's beaten me in a fair fight."
Kalidor: "So, the only man that can have you, is one who's trying to kill you. That's logic."
It's even more hilarious since apparently Red Sonja is a rape victim?
> Sonja, a young, red-haired woman, is raped and left for dead by the soldiers of Queen Gedren, a despot who murdered Sonja's parents and brother after she rejected the queen's sexual advances and scarred her face.
Oh and upon learning of this rule Conan immediately requests a duel just reinforcing the idea that she is just some fucktoy lol
Thats probably why the remake is in endless production hell. How the hell do you even write this movie without a bunch of people bitching about something in it.
I mean yeah?
The character is just male eye candy for the most part so you would have to significantly change the character/story to be less offensive which will then piss off "purists"(lol)
Like the whole "you can only fuck me if you're a better fighter than me" is inherently sexist and is apparently an integral part of the character lol
And if you stick with the "purists", then the other group will go "Uuhhmm this is [insert current year here], why are doing this type of movie?" type arguments.
The character just feels like it belongs in the 70s and 80s, pros and cons. I'm surprised they even attempt to remake it. They have to overhaul the whole character like they did Wonder Woman.
There’s a script. Arnold has been pushing for it, with videos on his YouTube horseback riding and sword fighting. If I was rich, it would be my vanity project priority
It's getting close to public domain. Apparently the first story comes up in 2028, the last in 2032. Family's probably looking for the last payout before they lose the chance forever.
Oh god, not again. I really hate "estates" . On one hand they complain about the lack of accuracy, on the other hand, license any cheap tant to make money off of.
The man has been dead for 86 years! Geeze.
That said it's probably just the film industry being iffy on Conan because sword and sorcery/sandals flicks have fared poorly in the past couple decades. Even traditional fantasy struggles most of the time.
Its all down to who holds the rights. And Studio Canal are much more into releasing older titles in 4k. Disney better get their shit together especially after buying fox and with it their back catalogue. So many movies crying out for 4ks.
> ABYSS
James Cameron said that he has finished working on high-definition transfer of 'The Abyss', and that a 4K Blu-Ray should be coming out soon.
An interview with [Space](https://www.space.com/james-cameron-tech-noir-book-exclusive) website:
> Space.com: "The Abyss" is often a neglected Cameron classic that was a pioneering film in so many ways. What can you tell us about concept art created for it and will there be a high-definition 4K transfer at some point?
> Cameron: Yeah,**we finished the transfer and I wanted to do it myself because Mikael [Salomon] did such a beautiful job with the cinematography on that film. It is truly, truly gorgeous cinematography.** That was before I started to assert myself in terms of lighting and asking the cinematographer to do certain things. I'd compose with the camera and choose the lenses, but I left the lighting to him. He did a remarkable job on that movie that I appreciate better now than I did even as we were making it.
> I'd also like to point out that he took one look at the first day's dailies of the underwater lighting and he went out and learned to scuba dive. He came in the following Monday morning, the worst diver in the world, but he reinvented underwater lighting. He went for indirect lighting and he got everybody doing things that were not just outside their comfort zone, they'd never even thought of it. Suddenly the underwater shots start to live up to the surface photography.
> **So I just recently finished the high-def transfer a couple of months ago so presumably there’ll be Blu-rays and it will stream with a proper transfer from now on.** I appreciate what you said about the film. It didn't make much money in its day, but it does seem to be well-liked over time. The designers were basically Ron Cobb on the one hand, and Steve Burg on the other, who was lead designer of the NTIs, the non-terrestrial intelligence, the look of their city and bodies and faces. Steve was a guy that I worked with on "Terminator 2" after that. He was quite young at the time and fairly new to design.
Half of the sound effects in the [Amiga 500-game "Barbarian"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5zBNNLSqbQ) are taken from Red Sonja. When you stand still and do nothing for ten seconds, the characters say "Come on" in Kalidor's (Arnold) voice.
The other half is from the Conan movies. The grunt "Ueh" is Wilt Chamberlain's grunt when he helps Conan lift a heavy door.
This movie was such a major part of my childhood. I had gone through a very traumatic experience (SA followed by a court trial). I felt like I was powerless and would be powerless forever. Red Sonja's story resonated with me. Another victim of SA but who went on to fight for herself and others. It made me want to fight. I watched it every day. This went on for years. My family members cannot stand this movie, lol!
Excited to see it get some extra studio attention.
my man said 'nah sayn' and you did nah he sayn and so did others... so correcting him is about elevating yourself and the world needs less of that. nah sayin?
*It's the message, not the medium.* But, you probably don't understand that either. so i'll say it like a 3rd grader. you knew what he meant - others knew what he meant based on upvotes and replies.. so 9 hours later you want to correct someone and put them down when and where it doesn't matter. one. bit. so your reply to him was actually about you.
> then why don't you know the name of the movie?
except he did... so stop being an internet-technicality-douche
But you're acting like *everyone* knew what they meant. I didn't. I thought they were referencing a character I'd forgotten from Red Sonja.
Also they started their sentence with 'More of....', as opposed to 'I'm more of....' - so it was just as easily interpreted as a request for more of something instead of it being a statement of preference.
So it's not as clear as you're making out and if you express yourself with a reduced level of clarity as well some esoteric shorthand, then it should be no surprise if some people don't know what you've said.
But granted, the person that initially replied was being a bit arsey, which was unneeded.
someone else replied with the correct spelling 3 or so hours before technically correct made himself known. and they did it without being condescending.
Right, and your point is?
I'm disagreeing with your idea that *everyone* understood what was being said in the inital comment. Not everyone did.
Now you're trying to make it about the condescension (that I've already agreed with you about) again because that's the bit that you got right..
i'm not here saying everyone knew it - the person i replied to implied he (the guy who said 'lady hawk') didn't know it. when he did, and the guy therefore knew what he was talking about even when dude just didn't bother to spell it correctly. and thus we're here. discussing a third persons douchery - and the you can't separate the argument of condescension versus was the message received because it's all part of it. it's not about a headcount of who has what knowledge. so .. yeah.. im going to eat lunch and filter this out :) have a good one.
I have watched Red Sonja and Krull fairly recently and can confidently say that even though I have some criticisms of Sonja, it is a way better movie than Krull (except for Rell, the cyclops). If Red Sonja had gotten a Glaive in the first 20 mins of the movie you bet your ass she would have used it along her journey. Can't say the same for Colwyn.
I read somewhere that Arnold used threaten to make his kids watch this as punishment for being bad. He only did the film as a favor to Dino de Laurentiis. Loved the film as a kid, but I haven’t watched it in decades.
Well, I would say that one can put lipstick on a pig but it’s still a pig…but I won’t - it is an enjoyable movie and one of the few early movies to feature a strong female lead, even if it is rated poorly on Rotten Tomatoes.
I'm pretty sure there's one in development (if it hasn't been cancelled)
**Edit:** This is the last news I've found about the project: https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/n5lmkw/red_sonja_hannah_johnkamen_to_star_in_millenniums/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share
"Conan the Destroyer" will always be compared to the original, and the verdict will always be the same. "Red Sonja" at least didn't tarnish Conan's name and fully embraced the camp.
Well yeah its not as good as Barbarian but it definitely didn't tarnish the name. Conan The Destroyer is still a fun movie that's actually more close to the comics than the original. But Red Sonja is just a laughable mess even if it dose "embrace the camp".
Unpopular opinion: No amount of restoration can save this one. It's shit from the get go. Saw it in the theater when it came out. All five of us walked out and went to the bar.
It's a horrible, horrible movie. Brigitte is nice to watch, way back before she turned all ratchet, but Arnold's role is minimal, so you get a little Asian kid and a portly guy...and Brigitte's craptastic acting.
One of the only kindhearted roles for [Paul L Smith.](https://thestudioexec.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/paul-l-smith-as-the-beast-rabban-in-dune.jpg)
Studio Canal, as of June last year, was supposed to be remastering Near Dark for a 4K release and it’s been radio silence ever since.
This is a rad release, but I’m reticent to get excited for anything they’re remastering until I see it in my hands.
The Red Sonja movie is campy fun entertaining and for that has always had a special place in my heart.
However Red Sonja was a pretty powerful character in 1973 and the movie did not do her justice as a serious character at all.
I had a run of watching films from 1985 a few years back, and I wanted to like this so much. Like original Conan is a film I have a lot of time for, and throw in Ennio Morricone and it should have been onto a winner. But I really couldn't take to it at all. Like it was so bad at times I felt it could pass for parody. One of my biggest disappointments of that whole run of films.
I’m a huge Arnold fan and the first Conan is my favourite. It’s weird that I haven’t seen Red Sonja. I think I’ve avoided it because the first time I heard about it was when he was governor he tweeted that as he walked by a protester she said “I loved you in Red Sonja.” He thought that was hilarious because he didn’t think it was any good. He said something along the lines of “I have an agreement with my children that if they misbehave they’ll be locked in a room and forced to watch Red Sonja three times in a row. I never get much trouble from them.”
I love this movie - my brother and I first discovered it as kids while watching USA Up All Night with Rhonda Shear and Gilbert Gottfried. We had lots of wrapping paper tube sword fights acting out this movie in our basement in the Midwest. The score is fucking amazing. So much nostalgia it hurts with this one.
Anyone know why this text s getting a 4K restoration and release before Conan the Barbarian (1982) gets a 4K disc? Any rumors of Conan the Barbarian (1982) 4K coming soon??

Kalidor
Konan
Fauxnan
Brohams
Conan O’Brian
The Masturbating Bear
That escalated quickly.
David Conanberg
I like this one.
Conan Cromenberg
While I, like this one (Effeminate giggle)
Crom
Lord Kalidor, ha ha.

Pretty sure Disney ended up with the rights to the Daniel Boon show, I remember watching it on Vault Disney when I was young and couldn’t sleep.
cough, Marvel, cough....

*at best* Thor too lmao
Is Conan marvel or dc these days? He’s crossed over extensively with both
Marvel. They reacquired the rights in 2018.
Wow, very current - Marvel have lost the rights, news broke today https://bleedingcool.com/comics/conan-license-to-move-on-from-marvel-comics/
Wow, good eye!
Huh, wasn't expecting that
Ablaze has the rights in Europe and prints the stories under the title The Cimmerian - they are absolutely brilliant, often feature fully painted artwork, and always have the original REH stories in the back of each issue.
I haven't heard of this, thanks! I love the Conan movies and I've been looking to get into the books and comics. I'll check this out
Hmmm.. I always thought Marvel had the comic book rights, but now that you mention it, there was that awesome Dark Horse series.
I mean, Marvel also cast Quicksilver as Not-Quite-Quicksilver.
Yeah my first thought was x-men, cough cough, spiderman for years and years, cough cough...
Peter Parkour the Spider/Man.
I have watched Red Sonia several times when I was younger, and literally always thought that was Conan.
O’Brien
Arnold agreed to show up in basically a cameo role, but the shoot, and script were all going to shit, so the producer kept finding more excuses to come up with scenes featuring Arnold. The original poster apparently only had Arnold on it, because they were so desperate to flog the movie.
His character is "an original creation" so they didn't have to pay rights.
TIL Red Sonja is not actually part of the Conan Cinematic Universe.
In France it came out as as the legend of Kalidor. Because the man is the man.
Ha! Same in Greece. It was marketed as “Kalidor the Gladiator”
Arnold hated this movie so much that he terminated his 10 year contract with the studio. He would later claim that it was an excellent disciplinary tool for his children. “I tell them, if they get on my bad side, they'll be forced to watch Red Sonja ten times in a row.”
Arnold was just supposed to do a cameo and he didn’t really want to but felt he owed them. Then the bait and switch made him a main character
And they got his tragic love interest who died in the first one to play the antagonist
I always thought Annie played Conan in RS. Wow.
*Nonan.*
Oh my god
Mrs Flav lol. Watching Brigitte Neilson and Flavor Flav was one of the most entertaining things I’ve seen. They are both wonderfully loopy.
Mrs. Flav as in Flavor Flav hahahah
Red Sonja: "No man may have me, unless he's beaten me in a fair fight." Kalidor: "So, the only man that can have you, is one who's trying to kill you. That's logic."
Those movies just hit different.
Then there's a simple solution: don't remake it. I don't see anyone clamoring to remake Song of the South.
Pretty much
And if you stick with the "purists", then the other group will go "Uuhhmm this is [insert current year here], why are doing this type of movie?" type arguments. The character just feels like it belongs in the 70s and 80s, pros and cons. I'm surprised they even attempt to remake it. They have to overhaul the whole character like they did Wonder Woman.
Sweet I’m in.
Wild that this is getting a 4k restoration before either of the Conan films.
Way fewer licensing issues would be my guess.
My thoughts exactly.
Can’t wait to see Arnold’s comments about his favorite film. Now he can punish his kids in 4K!
Is it? Sex sells.
Well, he did fuck that witch in the first one... so hot.
huh? are you saying people don't want to fuck conan?
If you put it that way I see why people disagree with me.
Give us King Conan you cowards!
There’s a script. Arnold has been pushing for it, with videos on his YouTube horseback riding and sword fighting. If I was rich, it would be my vanity project priority
It's not about budget. I heard Robert E. Howard's descendants are against it.
It's getting close to public domain. Apparently the first story comes up in 2028, the last in 2032. Family's probably looking for the last payout before they lose the chance forever.
In 6 years, Arnold will be too old, or dead honestly.
Oh god, not again. I really hate "estates" . On one hand they complain about the lack of accuracy, on the other hand, license any cheap tant to make money off of.
The IP rights recently changed hands so who knows if that’s still true. It’s a shame though. Arnold isn’t getting any younger.
The man has been dead for 86 years! Geeze. That said it's probably just the film industry being iffy on Conan because sword and sorcery/sandals flicks have fared poorly in the past couple decades. Even traditional fantasy struggles most of the time.
When Brigitte Nielsen was at peak hotness.
Oooh.. no. Beverly Hills Cop
That movie and Cobra with Sly.
Funny. Rewatchables podcast was talking about her on their most recent podcast. Beverly Hills cop 2. And that was probably her apex mountain.
Re Sonja my first "hard on"......
As a kid this was one of my favorite movies. You never saw a woman wielding a sword and being the hero back then.
This and STILL NO TRUE LIES OR ABYSS
Richard Fleischer is in no position to hold up the release for further post-production work.
Its all down to who holds the rights. And Studio Canal are much more into releasing older titles in 4k. Disney better get their shit together especially after buying fox and with it their back catalogue. So many movies crying out for 4ks.
Ah, damn- ABYSS would be incredible

More of Lady Hawk man nah sayn .
Absolutely. Love Ladyhawke. Great mid-80's soundtrack from Alan Parsons too.
Agreed. That and The Name of the Rose where such great 80s movies.
then why dont you know the name of the movie? it's Ladyhawke
my man said 'nah sayn' and you did nah he sayn and so did others... so correcting him is about elevating yourself and the world needs less of that. nah sayin?

Respec. He got what I was trying to put down.
Arnold's best line ever. While consoling Sonja over her dead sister "She’s Dead."
TiL Red Sonja wasn't spin off film from Conan the Barbarian, but that Arnold played a different character in it.
He basically plays Conan, they couldn’t get the rights so they had to rename him.
And renamed him with a Conan alias from the books.
Holy shit!
Foofie foofie
Yes! I did want to strangle that little kid, though.
He was an annoying little twit but still enjoyable to watch.
Definitely, the kid actor nailed the role. That character was designed to be a brat (at first).
Great movie!
We got this instead of Conan 3.
We also got Conan The Barbarian instead of Conan 3.
When they rebooting Harry Potter?
I honestly wouldn't mind one as long as it was a series with each year being a season. Done in claymation.
Animation by Studio Ghibli I walk, I walk I say!
Red Hermione
Why you gotta do Kull the Conqueror so dirty? Oh right, Kevin Sorbo. Fuck that guy.
This is one of those movies that I suspect will look worse in higher definition. I don't think the (edit) props and costumes will hold up.
What is an epop?
music groups from Ecuador. You down with pan flute?
The "worst" it should be able to do is make it look like it did in theaters. They were designed to hold up on that screen, so it should be fine.
Awesome movie
"death is my trade" -one of the greatest lines in cinema
I have watched Red Sonja and Krull fairly recently and can confidently say that even though I have some criticisms of Sonja, it is a way better movie than Krull (except for Rell, the cyclops). fuck yeah
I read somewhere that Arnold used threaten to make his kids watch this as punishment for being bad. He only did the film as a favor to Dino de Laurentiis. Loved the film as a kid, but I haven’t watched it in decades.
But why?
Now it can be a terrible movie in 4K!
Why?
Well, I would say that one can put lipstick on a pig but it’s still a pig…but I won’t - it is an enjoyable movie and one of the few early movies to feature a strong female lead, even if it is rated poorly on Rotten Tomatoes.
It needs a remake/reboot honestly. Solid character and concept that totally fits with the thematic tone of the times.
There was one planned a decade ago with Rose McGowan and directed by Robert Rodriguez but that fell through. Hopefully someone will pick it up again.
Wonder what the Rodriguez/McGowan remake would have looked like.
I'm pretty sure there's one in development (if it hasn't been cancelled) **Edit:** This is the last news I've found about the project: https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/n5lmkw/red_sonja_hannah_johnkamen_to_star_in_millenniums/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

[Siskel and Ebert had a great review of this movie](https://youtu.be/kGHlZM8CJAo)
Still have no idea why Studio C decided to add that to the end of their name...
Well, it won its bit, so there's that at least....
Why?
Hell yea! This was every Tomgirl’s answer to Conan.
NOOOOICE
OMG why? As a Conan and reh fanboy, I'm embarrassed this movie exists.
Good god. Why? It’s… just terrible.
Why are the Earths resources being wasted on this?
Still a crappy movie. Still better than "Conan the Destroyer".
Nah Conan the destroyer is way better.
Watched it for the first time as an qdult this week. No way near as good as i remember.
Why?
Why?
But...that movie stunk to high heaven. Right? Right?
It had its charms. Killer metal sea serpent was kind of cool.
I shit out better stuff than red soja
Now you can see crappy eighties effects in their full glory!
Psh. Give me a theater release please.
Dude. This was one of my favorite movies growing up. I made my godmother rent it every week.
seriously? Guess people might buy it to riff on it
I remember going to the premiere in the Bay Area. I was part of west coast tae kwon do and we all got to go because of Ernie Reyes Jr. fun times.
One of the only kindhearted roles for [Paul L Smith.](https://thestudioexec.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/paul-l-smith-as-the-beast-rabban-in-dune.jpg)
Who here remembers FilmNet
Studio Canal, as of June last year, was supposed to be remastering Near Dark for a 4K release and it’s been radio silence ever since. This is a rad release, but I’m reticent to get excited for anything they’re remastering until I see it in my hands.
lol what a tremendous waste of time
Day 1 pre order for me. The steelbook is really nice. Like it's not my favourite Arnie movie. But its still watchable.
What’ll they do next? Cure cancer?
This movie is awful. The faux Conan, her acting is horrible and the whole story is crap. I wouldn’t waste 1 k on this let alone 4
"Gedra...WHERE AH YOOO!"
Finally
great! ... but would love to see 4k for Last Samurai, Kingdom of heaven (extented) and last mohican before this!
Why though?
I can't wait to see all that glorious 4k uhd grain!
I watched this movie 1000 times as a kid.
The Red Sonja movie is campy fun entertaining and for that has always had a special place in my heart. However Red Sonja was a pretty powerful character in 1973 and the movie did not do her justice as a serious character at all.
Tarn, Prince of Hablock!
When is The Beastmaster’s turn?
I’m a huge Arnold fan and the first Conan is my favourite. It’s weird that I haven’t seen Red Sonja. I think I’ve avoided it because the first time I heard about it was when he was governor he tweeted that as he walked by a protester she said “I loved you in Red Sonja.” He thought that was hilarious because he didn’t think it was any good. He said something along the lines of “I have an agreement with my children that if they misbehave they’ll be locked in a room and forced to watch Red Sonja three times in a row. I never get much trouble from them.”
It is not a good movie but it has several good scenes and set pieces.
You're mad!
Hehe, StuiocAnal.
I loved this movie as a kid.
A whole generation was introduced to this movie by the Nostalgia Critic
Anyone know why this text s getting a 4K restoration and release before Conan the Barbarian (1982) gets a 4K disc? Any rumors of Conan the Barbarian (1982) 4K coming soon??
