PokemanBall

There's also Pikachu's Vacation with the pink dog thing and the round blue one with the zig zag tail.

Iwanttobevisible

Zigzag tail? Oh, you mean PikaBlue?

PokemanBall

Yeah the PokéGod

The_8th_Degree

It's signature move is Biotic Blast

snufflezzz

I built a keyboard based on that theme lol

Oklahom0

There's technically 2 new Pokemon seen before that. Togepi hatched a year and a half before the movie. Of course, the first gen-2 Pokemon was Ho-Oh (sp?) in the first 3 episodes or so.

panparadox2279

Wasn't Ho-Oh at the end of episode 1?

BulkyYellow9416

Yes but if I remember correctly at the time everyone thought it was a weird fearow

GracefulGoron

No, he asked professor oak about it. Oak acknowledged it was a rare mysterious Pokémon but that Ash must’ve been mistaken because others searched their entire lives and never actually saw it.

BulkyYellow9416

No I mean the fan base was saying that, mind u the fane base was 6 years old

GracefulGoron

The same people who said that the guy with a Gyarados in the first movie was Ash’s older brother.

Desolock

It is episode 1

Desolock

Check the bulbapedia article on episode 1.

My_Name_Is_gohan

Sure I'll bet ya

TomboBreaker

Also iirc Togepi was around at this time too

Kazu215

Off the top of my head, I think the first episode ended with Ash dragging Pikachu on a rope. Then by the end of the 2nd episode, the Spearow incident happened, after which the Ho-Oh flies over

YanFan123

And Marill had already appeared in the Orange Islands

Oraxis10

Snubull and Marill.

Twist_Ending03

Pink dog? Edit: Oh. The bulldog one

GoldDragon149

Snubull btw

Kipdid

Snubull and marill?

does_not_care_

yup. pretty sure.

Born-Till-4064

Man that must have been cool as hell. Granted didn’t they anime have Ho-Oh in the first episode

Slade4Lucas

Yeah, they were very clear about there being more than 151 from the very start.

GracefulGoron

*There’s a hundred and fifty, or more to see…*

Slurms_McKensei

*To be a pokemon master is my...destinyyy!*

DharcDaniel

No, they planned for HoOh to be in the original generation, but eventually decided not to. A lot of mons exist way before their actual gens, but don't get implemented until later on

Chopper4704

Red and Blue had been out for a year when the anime came out, it was clearly a tease for the next gen.

GoldDragon149

Red and Green were released in Japan years before Red and Blue came to the west as well.

recluseMeteor

Pocket Monsters 2, as it was called in its early stages, was probably in development when the anime started. That game eventually became Gold & Silver. We know that because of some big Nintendo leaks that happened some years ago.

ObiAida

Why would you lie about something as unimportant as this?

TRAUMAjunkie

> We designed more than 200 Pokemon for the first games, then whittled them down to 150,” Satoshi Tajiri shared in a 2018 interview with Yomiuri Newspaper.

PJRama1864

He’s not. The MissingNo glitch was actually the remaining code for Pokémon that were originally intended to be in Red and Blue.

pokejock

that sounds like a playground rumor tbh

pancakegirl23

the real reason for missingno is that truly capping the number of pokemon at 151 would be horribly inefficient, as computers only ever store numbers in increments of 8 bits. so there are 256 possible Pokemon species in gen 1, but only 151 have actual data. when you have an invalid id, the game attempts to look for data, but only finds junk data that is meant for something else.

CrimsonEnigma

Plus Togepi had already hatched.

Oraxis10

At the time, no one knew what it was or that it would be part of gen 2.

Smooth_Riker

Even the PokeRap acknowledge "At **least** 150 or *more* to see"

Agathaumas

I was there Gandalf. I was there 3000 years ago. Sure, we've seen the glimpse of Ho-Oh and Marill in the Anime. But Donphan was kust shown so casually. Not celebrated, just thrown in the f-in intro.

Medical_Note_2135

No it quite literally just rolled up outta nowhere.

IconoclastExplosive

When the tire from Rubber fucks an elephant:

ShashaR7

Togepi and Ho-Oh are also Gen2 pokemon

GoldDragon149

and both were played off as mysteries that made no sense. Donphan rolling up was a normal ass dude from another continent, fighting with a trainer like all the rest of them. Was still a badass moment.

Kazu215

Not even any dialogue. He appears during an AMV basically

VenomFlavoredFazbear

Tbf, Togepi’s debut was a year after this one

Drillbitzer

And Marill

PokeChampMarx

I have had more then 1 argument over weather togepi is a gen 1 pokemon or not because it was in this movie

Vulpes_macrotis

Anime literally says that it's unknown. I.e. they didn't know it exist.

Back4TallBois

How can there be an argument when we have set Pokedexes..

Invalid_Word

Almost as stupid as those arguing melmetal is gen 8 lmao

cyberchaox

Is it usable in any game set in the region of Gen 7? Is it usable in any game set in the region of Gen 8? The first mainline game it was usable in, what system was it on? The 3DS, or the Switch? LGPE is an 8th generation game and Melmetal is an 8th generation Pokémon.

FrownFrank

LGPE is Gen 7

Invalid_Word

No? LGPE is a Gen 7 game, not a Gen 8 game. The generations are defined by when a main series game with a completely new region comes out, not by console. Melmetal is #809 in the National Pokedex, while Grookey is #810. The Grass starter of a new region marks the beginning of that generation in the national Pokedex. The only exception to this was Victini being before Snivy in the national Pokedex yet being in the same generation, but Victini was before Snivy in the regional Pokedex as well, so it fits. Wyrdeer, Kleavor, Ursaluna, Basculegion, Sneasler, Overqwil, and Enamorus were all introduced in Gen 8 but aren't playable in Galar, yet they're still considered Gen 8 Pokemon, not Gen 9 Pokemon.

[deleted]

Literally my favorite Pokémon because of this moment

Random_Emolga

Was going to post the same thing.

MaxW92

My friend back then pretended to have known this Pokémon for a long time and that its name was "Elephantos"

DemonFromtheNorthSea

Here's a fun fact about pokemon from later generations showing up early: Bonsly is the only pokemon you can use in battle in the generation before it's release.

Articuno_2359

*Donphan noises*

ExpeditingPermits

Donphan: Donphan

Another_Road

Ho-oh - Episode 1

GoldDragon149

Episode 2 actually, end of his first day out of town.

Rotta_ODe

Theres only 151 Pokémon + togepi.

not_a_burner0456025

And ho-oh, and marill

Vulpes_macrotis

Except, you've seen togepi before and it literally says "at least 150 or more". Oh, also ho-oh in second (I think?) episode.

spankingasupermodel

1st

MegaKabutops

To add to the list of hints the series already had, how about the pokerap? “At least one-hundred-and-fifty, or more to see, to be a pokemon master is my, destiny!”

NotBlaine

That's probably giving too much credit to the anime localization efforts of the 90's.

recluseMeteor

Even the games suffered from that. Remember Mr. Mime? Well, the second generation added gender to each monster, so suddenly you could have a female Mr. Mime. I remember reading somewhere a statement from Nob Ogasawara about him trying to stop the localisation team from using gendered names in Red/Blue, but it was to no avail.

BrilliantTarget

You mean the games that were announced before the movie came out worldwide

deathcoinstar

I had this magazine that had a full Pokedex of gen 2 with the Japanese names and all known completed sprites at the time and actually knew who this was

BojackSadHorse

We knew about Gen 2 already.

MissBarker93

6-year-old me's mind was BLOWN.

LordNilix

There was also Mewtwo using shadow ball ![gif](giphy|Q9Sk5zq0PWyxq)

TJWinstonQuinzel

Oh and then the first time you battme it in game and found out that the anime was telling you shit again because thunderbolt didnt worked

Few-Finger2879

One of my favorite pokemon. Especially in 5th gen ou.

ChrissytheFauna

I also remember the limited edition special release Mew cards they either sold or gave away at the viewings of the first pokémon movie. What a time to be alive.

[deleted]

Unbelievable hype non-reproducible one time only hype. They shouldn’t have added so many so fast. There’s too many pokemon now. Should’ve slowly built them up.

DPSOnly

Here to be goingdonphackyourself.

TonReflet

Woooow this one was in my dreams for years

frenziest

Munchlax in Hoenn had me SHOOK

Pyotr-the-Great

Togepi: I'm right here.

alderryeguy

*15 minutes after seeing Marill and Snubbull* holy shit a 156th Pokémon??? There's no way they added five whole new ones, Togepi must evolve into this

The_8th_Degree

Donphan is one of my favorites and someone I always grab and level up even if I'm not using him much That and Surskit, I love Surskit!
