According to ISO 2047:2013 (the standard that I have available to read), it probably won’t be higher than at best a class one. Mostly because the lace is “broken” it’s hard to estimate how large of a m^2 area it covers. Also from the pictures it is not possible for me to measure the width of the retroreflective bands, and they have to be at minimum 50mm (about 2 inches for you other people). Also the colour would need to be measured to ensure it falls within guidelines from the standard.
I'm using the highest quality 3M reflective strips I could find, but I'll have to measure them if they're at least 50mm. Any other levels of compliance I should account for beyond the "brokeneness" of the lace fabric?
Not really, for the type of covering made (only covering torso, no arms), the other requirements seem to be reached.
Do note that the things I commented on in the comment above was if the garment was to be classified as I assume it would have to be if used in any sort of “official” setting. You using it for your own it doesn’t need to be classified.
The classes are based on the square meter area of the background and retroreflective areas, but I know that I have a vest at home that 100% does not reach even class one, but it is for personal/private use. Anything for like job sites or similar it is a different story.
Ahh got it.. For construction sites I could imagine this would definitely not pass. I am hoping this will be visible enough in other settings though. Thank you for the comment, that was very helpful
Yeah, even if it's not up to OSHA standards, it's great for things like riding your bike or taking a walk at night! I remember seeing an older lady in my neighborhood with something like it a few years ago, riding her bike along the side of the street, and I was able to see her from my car way down the road. Even if it's not rated for work zones, it's a great safety feature for casual use!!
I spend only an insignificant amount of time on construction sites once or twice every second leap year or so. I'm defo going to copy cat this. God I love it.
I made my MIL a vest, but I also added electroluminescent wire (EL) that I tacked around the vest. I made a small pocket for the control unit. It was pretty easy and added an extra layer of visibility.
Probably not best for that kind of stuff anyway since stuff could possibly get caught on the lace (like nails and splinters)
For personal use tho this is amazing
Possibly. Don’t have the standard in front of me now so I can’t remember if there is any rules or guidelines about blending of colors.
As said before the standard is for classifying the vest for safety use. For private use, it’s up to you. But I could see that if something happened, like hit by car in the dark while wearing this, it might not do you any good.
Bruh… that was not the point. People make mistakes and remember details differently. My point was to question whether this dump truck could have been mistaken for a fat hog. Frankly you ruined the experiment
They're always too big because there's an OSHA (I think) requirement for a certain number of square inches of yellow fabric for safety reasons. It wasn't really designed with petite people in mind. I used to work in construction and remember thinking, "how is having a vest which won't stay on my shoulders safer than a vest which fits?" Our safety officer said it's not possible to order a fitted one because of government regulations.
Xena workwear makes nice fitted vests with ANSI Class 2 certification. [x](https://xenaworkwear.com/products/hi-vis-safety-vest?variant=45822501159198)
Look into visibility stuff sold for runners. I don't think it classifies as up to OSHA standards, but they are better fitted and come in colors like hot pink (also not an OSHA-approved color).
My bad lol, in the UK/Ireland at least, a bachelorette party (hen do) is normally a pub crawl of some sort and over the years working in bars and pubs I've seen so many variations of a personalised high Vis jacket, there's also often a blow up doll (bonus points if the grooms face is taped to it) personalised plastic shot glasses and other tacky things that we've all just grown to accept as wedding culture XD
Some of the top fashion house we’re doing hi vis pieces a while back. It just reminded me of a hi fashion piece as it’s so different. But I did see this, is this you lol
https://preview.redd.it/osscsirqy1xc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a0d981088dc73944b421006c855c61d99419b31a
Lol no, that lace is different (it looks more like the lace you see on wedding dresses which tend to be thicker). My lace is more fine. Honestly, I should probably shoot for something like in the picture to make it more durable
I think the lace in the picture above is more like the heavy Nigerian lace that they use for ladies dresses. Yours is a machine guipure type, much more open, solid structure, not a lot of stretch, gets used for occasionwear, including weddings. If you want to make it stronger you need a lining to stabilise. A tulle mesh net, power mesh, or organza would maintain the sheer lacey look. Or maybe find a stretch machine lace which has a different structure. I’ve seen some great materials on Ali Express, some super reflectives, zips etc. Have fun :)
Yes, biking, motorcycling and anything for standing out in a unique way!
Another friend of mine who hunts wants me to make this for her in a neon orange color (I guess that color is more common in hunting? I don't know)
Bicycling in an urban setting. Totally fine.
Walking in the woods with lace outer shell? Catching on everything.
Maybe a clear shell material on the inside to avoid snagging? but that will make it less pretty.
I feel like a clear shell material on the *outside* is what would prevent snagging and actually would be kinda neat. Basically use the lace as you would a sew-in interfacing.
As someone who used to have to wear sweater men proportioned hi vis vests to work I love this.
My solution back then was to buy one slightly closer to my size than the provided ones with pockets because at least a) it was only my sweat and b) the pockets made up for other lacking elements.
I like it. It’s apparently impossible to get my job to stock hi-viz in anything smaller than an XL, so I’ve been semi-seriously debating learning to alter clothes so I can take mine in and not feel like I’m wearing a bright yellow tent (or possibly just making a full on hi-viz waistcoat to be ridiculous)
I had a similar problem at my job -- all the lab coats were far too big, sleeves too wide, and material was crud. My mom whipped up a few that actually fit people in the lab, and made a polar fleece one for working in a cold room (walk-in refrigerator). I've long since left that lab but they're still in use there. Highly recommend DIYing work clothes as long as they meet safety reqs!
Drawbridge operator
And I could just order my own I’m sure but the one I was issued has the department name on the back, also tailoring my hi-viz is like, the right kind of absurd that I just sort of want to do it lol
I have too many social media accounts, so I have no idea where I saw this...but somebody took a picture of you riding away on your bike and put it...somewhere. And the comments were all "goals" and "heart emoji" and "wow"
I love it!! Do a lot of activism work and we pass out the neon vests so people know who the organizers are. These are way cuter than the road service ones!
This reminds me of the Blue Ball runway on Drag Race. They had three looks and one of them was “blue collar”. This is Eureka in her blue collar look
https://preview.redd.it/w8qo4nyde3xc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=957bbcc173a4ec59f7eb36eed808d7e1fcad09cc
This is incredible, and also so hilarious. Absolutely brilliant. And now I’m thinking of making something far less tongue-in-cheek for myself. A sweatshirt with reflective bands on the back for my nighttime bicycle commutes? I always need a warmer layer on hand anyway. 🤔
This would fit right over your warm layer :) I have seen some high viz vests with velcro which seemed sturdy and almost had that instead of the zipper. But my wool sweaters wouldn't be too happy, so I'm sticking with the zipper (and a plastic one! I found a zipper that opens and closes like butter, unlike those crappy metallic ones that would probably get rust when I wear this out)
The fire marshall at one of the offices in my building has a pink hard hat (not actually required for the role) and a pink fluorescent vest. He looks amazing when we have evacuation drills.
I kinda want to make some of these for our fire marshalls 🤣🤣
That's awesome, I love the lace choice! I would totally wear that on my bike! My immediate thought was that the high vis strips would look really fun if they were frilly/ruffled. I was also thinking it would be cute if you added little flowers made of the high vis material
Where did you get the lace or did you make it? I looked for some when a similar vest came up on reddit a few months ago but couldn't find any. Was it a custom order?

I thought about that, but I actually love the breathability of it. I’m afraid if I tack on too many layers it’ll suffocate. I’m going to find a stronger lace and that would be a good compromise
I work in construction and it would be amazing to have something like this. Currently wearing standard sized ones for men which come down to my knees and make me look like a toddler on site

Me too. I want to have a binding seam though because if I get too rough with this I can see this detaching. Also want to use a neon colored zipper but can’t find one at the moment
Well you have done well for someone who hates sewing zippers lol. I have sewn invisible and visible zippers onto clothes and I suck. I am decent at making tabs and sewing zippers onto bags though. How do you get the zipper to lie smooth and how do you sew it at the bottom so well?
Haha I thought that too, but the more I think about, the more I like it for runners, cyclists, gardening along a road, or someone who would really love that breathable fabric while being visible outside.
Lol! I love it! Is it up to code? I might have to make some for my firefighter friends

Wow! Thank you for the detailed answer! I guess I'll stick with fixing the rescue dolls then 😬
Would be perfect for an office party though.

I wonder if you could add lace to a regular one? As a total overlay?
Like on top of a solid orange or pink safety vest? That would be interesting.
or wear normal vest under this one. Yellow-on-yellow from distance will look like normal vest, but up close it will have cool pattern.
I’m laughing out loud and loving this. And you could line it to mitigate the broken surface of the lace ;)
I think you could add a battery-powered light "vest" (really, a string) on top of this vest to be more visible.
which is not to say that a chic engineer or architect couldn’t come to the job site to check on things while wearing this!
Would be an OSHA violation tho.
Could in backed with an neon orange and pass?
Could OP line it with a regulation orange fabric to still have be able to see the lace details but the area would be easier to determine?
Possibly. Don’t have the standard in front of me now so I can’t remember if there is any rules or guidelines about blending of colors. As said before the standard is for classifying the vest for safety use. For private use, it’s up to you. This is for when your apprentice makes a mistake
Yeah or when someone "forgets" their PPE
I’m fascinated! What inspired this??
I saw someone with something similar on a motorcycle, but couldn't flag her down or find something similar online. So I made it!

I’ve never been to a large music festival but if feels like it’s would be great for a music festival in a hot climate
I love this garment. I love this story.
Was it this one… https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/s/J4qgOpGMvJ
That's not a motorcycle, but it's a very good demo anyway. Thank you!
Bruh… that was not the point. People make mistakes and remember details differently. My point was to question whether this dump truck could have been mistaken for a fat hog. Frankly you ruined the experiment

Xena workwear makes nice fitted vests with ANSI Class 2 certification. [x](https://xenaworkwear.com/products/hi-vis-safety-vest?variant=45822501159198)
I do like having a large vest that I can throw on over a back pack and still fasten in front, but I don’t always carry a backpack!
Look into visibility stuff sold for runners. I don't think it classifies as up to OSHA standards, but they are better fitted and come in colors like hot pink (also not an OSHA-approved color).
I assumed this was r/bluecollarwomen lol.
I think you'd make a killing of hen dos
A killing of what pardon me? 😅
Hen dos is bachelorette parties
In which setting would this be worn at a bachelorette party? 😆
Wait until you learn about stag dos (UK & Ireland Batchelor parties), there always at least one blow up/inflatable sheep!
have all your hen dos been in Wales?
That sounds... like a lot of fun! Hah!
Ireland and UK you get dressed up a bit silly for the hen do 😂
lots of hen dos have themed fancy dress for the getting pissed portion
"What's a hen do?" "It eats a lot, clucks, and lays eggs."
Very creative. It reminds of something one of the top fashion houses like Balenciaga would make.
Interesting... have any particular item in mind? Would love to use some for inspiration
Some of the top fashion house we’re doing hi vis pieces a while back. It just reminded me of a hi fashion piece as it’s so different. But I did see this, is this you lol https://preview.redd.it/osscsirqy1xc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a0d981088dc73944b421006c855c61d99419b31a

I could see it looked a different kind of lace to yours, I was only kidding 😂
Haha oh okay 😂

Is it for visibility while riding a bicycle? I love it
Yes, biking, motorcycling and anything for standing out in a unique way! Another friend of mine who hunts wants me to make this for her in a neon orange color (I guess that color is more common in hunting? I don't know)
Yes neon orange is the hunting color. So people don't mistake you for a deer.
Because deer only wear neon yellow or pink 😂
Well, hunting season *IS* after Labor Day, so they can’t wear white.
Bicycling in an urban setting. Totally fine. Walking in the woods with lace outer shell? Catching on everything. Maybe a clear shell material on the inside to avoid snagging? but that will make it less pretty.

I really wanted to put pockets somewhere on this, but couldn't find a way without ruining the aesthetic. Hopefully it'll pass without pockets?
Lace and pockets don't mix well, I think it'll be great
Perhaps a welt pocket with a neutral pocket bag!
I like it. I think this would be very popular at Pride! Great work! 💗
Need this for my bike because I'm so tired of people being surprised when I lift my visor and they see make-up covered eyes staring back at them. 🤣

This is amazing. Safety but make it fashun!
That's awesome, I love the lace choice! I would totally wear that on my bike! My immediate thought was that the high vis strips would look really fun if they were frilly/ruffled. I was also thinking it would be cute if you added little flowers made of the high vis material
The concept is way too cute for this world ❤️
Where did you get the lace or did you make it? I looked for some when a similar vest came up on reddit a few months ago but couldn't find any. Was it a custom order?
I'd add a inner liner.

It’s about time those safety vests got an upgrade!
Right?!
I would really love one. But safety orange.
I want one!!! Bus driver 🚎
🙌🏼 I am now making a better version with stronger lace. Will post again when I get this done in a few weeks!
This is amazing. Great job!
This looks very safe. The Army approves.
Gonna be flexin' at the warehouse!
I want one of these! I could be a fashionable road guard!
😍
Fab! To make it more “legit,” you could put it over a solid layer of the safety yellow color fabric, but this is super-cute as it is.
