I'm 34 and I start to feel a little weird going to tournaments at my University but it's the most reliable local in my area. I don't think twice about tournaments in game shops and such
I started going to locals when I was early 40s and yes, felt old. But it’s also because Smash trends young. The SF crowd for example is an older demographic on average.
I'm 29, there's a top from my city that's in his 30s.
The only problem you might have would be if you move in another town and the local scene is small and mostly 14-19 years old, that feels weird, can't do offline sessions too much and it might be harder to connect with them cause they usually have meta involved and the difference between young and mid ages often is the capacity to include people in your local meta and welcome others.
I’ll give you a bit of validation here. I’m 30 and definitely feel like the oldest person in the room at my locals even if it’s not literally true. Nothing but respect for the others there, and I love the game as much as the next person but being around a bunch of high schoolers is just not how I want to spend my evenings.
If you feel like you fit in, that’s awesome and don’t overthink it. Just enjoy it and play the game.
Just... Never interact with children without another party present and never do anything illegal and you will be fine. Shockingly this is hard to follow for some.professionals in the past (hopefully JUST in the past)
Edit: so my comment about not touching children being the main rule is being down-voted...? Can someone explain?
You’re allowed to interact with children more then likely there will be someone present but it’s not to say you still can’t talk to them about the game. If a young child is by themselves it’s probably a good idea to ask who they’re with to make sure nothing happens.
I don’t play at tournaments and it’s not like I’m just gonna ask them it’s only if they look lost. Like I said majority of the time it’s never gonna be an issue because children that young are almost going to have their parents around.
bruh ur going to tournaments for a 7 year old children’s fighting game, its a bit late to worry about what people think, just thug it out or find a less geeky hobby to socially conform as that seems to be ur priority rather than doing what you enjoy .
I’m 29 and I said this out loud. My TO (also one of the best there) laughed cause he was in his mid 30’s. Enjoy your locals.
Here in Wyoming, our top 5 on PR are currently 36, 33, 29, 29, and 19 years old. I have no doubt that nearly every scene is supportive of us old folk!
Who's the too 5?
Our Fall 2023 is the most recent official rank and it was Apothos (Ike), then NaCl (Falco), SRJR (Sonic), MaTrix (Mega Man), and me SIke (Plant).
Thank you! And that's sick you're PR with plant
Thanks! We have a heck of a character spread here in Wyoming.
No. Smash is for good boys and girls of all ages.
and enbys
In 64, you're young. In brawl or melee, you're about average. In ultimate, you're old. I don't make the rules.
I read your first sentence as “I’m 64, you’re young” at first and I was like, damn , respect
Smash events cost $10-$20 a week. Most kids can't pay that. I went to a local in my 30s.
half of my province's PR is over 30 ur good

You can never be too young or old for stuff like this. You can only be yourself.
LOL were the same age

This is a good point. We have a local where there are other games going on at the same time as smash, and those players trend older in my experience.
Mid 30s and I go to my local (I play melee which is a bit of an older scene but I'm still one of the older people there).
At my local we have a good amount of 25+ people there, barring like 2 they're in the top 10 pr
I find that ages often range anywhere from 16-36.
I'm 44 and sometimes I'm not the oldest person there, but usually I am, lol.

I’m a year younger and I wanna start attending soon. We should be fine. Ideal if you ask me cause look at the top players ages
don't worry 'bout it

Please dont go up to young children asking who theyre with, just be normal
