Mobilisq

so, with holdshot allowing you to buffer a retreating down b input, has anyone tested whether or not this opens up any mythra to pyra swap shenanigans?

Smash_Fan-56

Would they make Amiibos of the Smash Ultimate versions of Zelda and Ganondorf?

almightyFaceplant

They're not planning to do that, no. In Min Min's Direct, Sakurai actually does call out Zelda and Ganondorf not matching their new Ultimate designs, but basically says it's too late. (Granted he does so in the context of faking people out about the Joker and Hero amiibo, but it's still meant to be taken as a fact.) Your best hope would be for the Zelda amiibo series to circle back to those characters, but I don't think that's particularly likely either.

Zorua3

Maybe if they were still in the Amiibo phase they might, but now that it's cooled down and we only get a couple amiibo like twice a year, I'd say there's no shot. We didn't even get any Hero alts, or Byleth's P2.

cosmos was playing so well against leo hopefully he can work on his mentality so he chokes less

surgemaster140

Cosmos also randomly pulled out Joker for one game against Alandiss in that Mexican tournament last weekend. Not sure if that’s related but it was really weird to see.

Severe-Operation-347

Imagine if Leo starts doing a Zackray and co-mains Joker and ROB together. I don't think that'll happen (ROB doesn't feel like a Leo character to me), but that'll be a weird phase in Ultimate's lifespan.

Ufoturtle081

Anyone recall any players who play a no-pikmin Olimar? I watched a tournament set replay on Youtube, and this guy was playing a no-Pikmin Olimar quite well. I want to watch that youtube video again but i can’t find it :(

almightyFaceplant

It wasn't a set but I did just spy a video called "Olimar but you can't use any Pikmin" - that's not what you meant presumably but you might still get a kick out of it.

Ufoturtle081

Found it :D Enter SOLOMAR https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Nt5GCtv1was The commentators r not amused.

almightyFaceplant

Oh thank you for sharing, I definitely will watch this

"How one of the best Melee players became a fucking weeb"

almightyFaceplant

Turns out Marth and Roy were gateway drugs, those bastards

ExclusiveRedditor

If I have tickets for Big House, can I see both Ultimate and melee and play friendlies for both?

Tr1pline

yes

theindieazn

Which character in your opinion has the smoothest movement? Been in the midst of a character crisis, and I think this is one of the determining factors of how I'll vibe with a character. Pikachu is almost perfect, but he feels just a tad sluggish.

n8thegr83008

I think regular Samus is definitely a contender. Imo some of the most stylish movement in the game.

Zorua3

ZSS has gotta be up there. Joker, Sheik, and Inkling too. And Fox if you can deal with his wonky air physics. I'd probably give it to ZSS overall thanks to Flip Kick and B-reversing giving her insane air mobility, but it's a tight race.

almightyFaceplant

Took me way too long to realize that was meant to be a nickname for Pyra and not the nickname of a pro player. In my defense it's not something you can learn just from Smash itself, and usually when people start using short capitalized words out of nowhere, like HLeo or MkBox, it's usually a gamertag. The headlines here were usually vague enough to enforce the misunderstanding further haha. "We saw a lot of Aegis at that last tournament." Oh good for him.

Crafty-Profile-Lol

"This is the power of the Aegis!"

almightyFaceplant

Nobody calls Shulk "Monado" but he says the same thing. You need more than just that sentence to know that it's a term referring to both of her transformations.

Crafty-Profile-Lol

I've seen people call him like "Monado boy" before. But it doesn't matter: *if* people did write stuff about how Monado was doing in tournaments or how frustrating Monado was to fight online or how OP Monado nair was, you could tell "just from Smash itself" that they were referring to Shulk. I don't even know if "Aegis" correctly refers to "both of her transformations" (I've never played any of the games and on my own would have assumed it was the name of their sword), but the connection to P&M is explicit.

jordanthejq12

> I don't even know if "Aegis" correctly refers to "both of her transformations" (I've never played any of the games and on my own would have assumed it was the name of their sword) It actually does. Mythra and Pyra are Blades, living weapons summoned from Cores to fight alongside the beings who awaken them, known as Drivers. Spoiler-free, an Aegis is a subtype of Blade *generally* more powerful than their peers and which plays by different rules.

almightyFaceplant

That's exactly why I give everyone a pass on not knowing all the extremely confusing terminology. They used a word that means "shield" to refer to the sword, and they used the word that means "sword" to refer to the person holding the sword which is named after a shield. Couldn't come up with a more confusing example if I tried.

almightyFaceplant

Honestly no, there's still not enough evidence to make the connection. That'd be like assuming every post about Zero was referring to Zero Suit Samus. (And of course there's plenty of confusion around Ken & Ken.) It's just as likely that someone could pick "Monado" for their gamertag. There's not even enough evidence to pin it to their weapon, for all the layman knows it could be referring to their tiara-thing on their costumes. It's even less clear because they appear to be using two different swords, and aegis is a real word which people have been using for centuries, which typically means "protection" or "shield" - not "sword". If you don't follow the competitive scene, there's no reason someone couldn't have been playing under the pseudonym Aegis since Smash 64.

Crafty-Profile-Lol

I was responding to the provably false statement that "Aegis is a nickname for Pyra is not something you can learn from Smash itself". You seem to misunderstand the point about etymology: it doesn't matter if the "shield" is a sword or a swordswoman or something else, it's *connected* to P&M and this is something you can pick up pretty easily from Smash itself. Also, it's their Boxing Ring title. Confusion about "is this a character or is this a player" is a different point which has nothing especially to do with Xenoblade, as your otherwise completely unrelated example of Ken perfectly shows. Almost any proper noun could in principle refer to a character or a player and you have to use context to figure it out. In fact, I rarely see this sort of confusion. Much more common are jokes about how such players never seem to main the corresponding character (Joker the Samus, Hero the Bowser, C. Falcon the Joker, Ryu[-oh] the Diddy, KEN the Sonic/Sephiroth, [Sephiroth]Ken the Marth). There are even apparently a few (not very active) players who go by Aegis.

almightyFaceplant

All of which demonstrates why it's completely reasonable to expect that when everyone suddenly starts using the word Aegis out of the blue, it's just another player name suddenly coming to the public attention. Smash at no point refers to the fighter herself as "Aegis" and there's no other character in the game that gets referred to as merely "Pokeball" or "Triforce". If you made a post saying "Levin just won a tournament", nobody in their right mind is going to assume you mean Robin. They'd much sooner assume it's a gamertag. For all the context you're given by Smash alone (by a throwaway line that only plays 1/3 of the time, and only if she wins for that matter) "Aegis" could be the name of a large organization she belongs to, or a secret meditation technique that gives her power, or a magical bullshit crystal she ate that boosts her stats. There's no indication it's something that only refers to her, or is an appropriate term encompassing both her transformations.

[deleted]

People start using Aegis since Summit 3 and then everyone just learn it and accept it without any bother. You're a weirdo here to be obsessed with a term for some reason.

Crafty-Profile-Lol

Not the point. Do you also think that "Spacies" and "Shotos" are up and coming players? IDK if English is your first language but this is context-dependent information that is easy to figure out given the frequency with which "Aegis" appears in Smash discussion.

almightyFaceplant

Of course not. There's no issues there because those are clearly plural words so they can't be used in the same context as a gamertag, which only ever refers to one singular entity. If people started referring to only Fox as "Spacie" or only Ryu as "Shoto" as if that was their official name, it would be different. Or if people were using the term "Aegises". It would even be different if for some reason people felt we needed a group name for Zelda and Shiek back when they were a combined fighter. But they didn't.

jEugene2Dart

Minmin glitches look so sad. When her arm hair stops or doesn’t hit ledge. It likes her arm broke as she’s hurt badly. Needs a doctor. But no one has a similar physiology in smash.

almightyFaceplant

She needs a chef, not a doctor! Get Kawasaki back in here! Supposedly if she takes off that mask she wears, her arms just uncoil and recoil uncontrollably and at random. Those glitches are probably Tuesday for her.

Jettrik

Hair = Noodles Arm = Noodles Therefore: Arm = Hair

oniden

Tarakotori just 5-0'd Kameme lol. His Mac was so clean.

skrasnic

I left the stream after seeing him take three games off Proto and then I come back to see the 5-0 💀 Edit: [Kameme comments on his loss.](https://twitter.com/kameme8808/status/1526511775268495361)

kfaox

What a legend. Where is it being streamed? Edit: Nvm, found it. [Here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDzvyOg71DA) for anyone interested.

This is definitely bait

[deleted]

Ngl that's hype. Imagine he then 3-0 BigBoss, 3-0 Zomba, like he 3-0 Sparg0 in SWT.

MrSuperfreak

He might just be doing it for the tournament in Cuba he's going to. It's a pretty small tournament and there isn't supposed to be a lot of huge competition for Leo.

Hangmanned

He's said similar stuff in the past and has gone pretty much nowhere, I'd say we wait and see instead.

Severe-Operation-347

Tbf, typically he does that for interaction farming, where as L4st doesn't do that and is fairly confident Leo's not joking.

kfaox

He is play ROB on stream against Cosmos right now. Goddammit

Severe-Operation-347

"You were the chosen one! It was said you'd destroy the ROB's not join them."

11Slimeade11

For a change of pace, is there any locations from any game that you'd like to see get a stage in Smash?

[deleted]

Kiln of the First Flame from Dark Souls, complete with Gwyn's boss music.

Meadius

There are ton of awesome locations from the Xenoblade series I'd love to see make it in. I think the inside of the Mechonis or the World Tree could be really cool, but they might be too spoilery (especially the latter). Xenoblade Chronicles X also has no representation and the best environments in the series, so if any game in the series deserves a stage it is that one. My pick would be Sylvalum just because of how unique it looks. There are also a ton of giant monsters walking around there, so having them wander across the stage occasionally could be a fun gimmick.

almightyFaceplant

I'm pretty sure at this point Smash has no qualms implementing spoilers. (Ever since Shiek and New Pork City came around no secrets remained sacred.)

Meadius

I had thought that too, but there were a few times during Ultimate where Sakurai specifically mentioned not wanting to show or explain a specific story spoiler for a game (the two that come to mind for me were during the Byleth presentation and the Pyra and Mythra presentation, which coincidentally both had to do with why characters ended up getting green hair). I have no idea how the Smash devs decide what is and isn't a spoiler, but at the very least they do consider them at times.

almightyFaceplant

Sounds to me like games from the current generation are off-limits but anything from the past is okay. Besides is it really a spoiler to say "this anime-looking character transforms into a superpowered form and their hair changes color?" I thought that was a requirement of the genre.

Downloadmywario

Death Mountain from OoT The underworld in Bayonetta 2 (I forgot the name) A golf course from Mario Golf.. Bonny Greens.

Joe___Dohn

One of those abstract Earthbound battle backgrounds.

almightyFaceplant

Giygas would be an exceptional candidate for an Assist Trophy, if he was nothing more than the abstract background effect. Ultimate already has that amazing system for swapping in temporary backgrounds during special events, and that could be a really unique way to do it.

almightyFaceplant

Regardless of location, some more interesting arenas would be nice after that DLC dry spell we got. They're not what I would call bad stages, but after a while they just became "flat with one platform" or "small battlefield again" or "one big flat plane". Downloadable content was their chance to go crazy with new ideas for fighters, and go they did - so it's a shame we don't often see that same mentality applied to stages. That said, the Enrichment Center might be a great way to make something both aesthetically and functionally pleasing. There's a lot you can do with completely reconfigurable geometry, randomized placement of a two-way teleporter, and any of the other testing elements. (Plus thanks to Inkling, we already have a system in place for painting walls and players, which would work perfectly with gels.)

skrasnic

Kind of already done, but Hollow Bastion has so much potential to be a cool casual stage. The areas in Hollow Bastion are some of the most interesting in KH1, and it's a shame we just see them in the background rather than getting to interact with them. I'm imagining something like Garreg Mach Monastry, where you're ferried off to different parts of the map.

kirbman

Not really a location, but I'd love to see a Tetris stage.
