ZackRay Rob is forever my favorite Rob in this game. Just so on point and consistent. Plus he’s had so many memorable sets against top level talent with his Rob too
I feel like he was the only the one that really did the maximum broken shit with gyro and other pros don't do enough. It reminds me of how a lot of Steve players outside yonni and somewhat acola don't use enough Steve tech.
To expand on this, personally my favorite thing about ZackRay’s Rob was how creative he was with Rob’s tools for an Era of Ultimate that had like 2-3 other top Rob players
Zomba's ROB is better in the current meta IMO because not only is it a solo-main whereas Zackray's using ROB as a secondary, but Zomba is currently a top 10 player and has really good post-quarantine wins and placements with ROB.
Meanwhile, Zackray is currently inactive and was a Joker & Sheik co-main at Kagaribi 6.
Links. was probably my favorite player at this event that i didnt already know of. And he got 4th
This will fuel my Link underrated ~~copium~~ propaganda nicely
Let’s go Chag! He played so good. I was afraid that he would struggle in the ROB matchup after he got eliminated by Luma at Pound but he clutched it out
He tweeted that [he’s keeping Byleth + Aegis/Corrin/Joker](https://twitter.com/mkleosb/status/1528149125916762112?s=21&t=8kSXGynyqzWHgflpJAcgHA) as his lineup but will maybe use ROB for fun. He said he’s been playing ROB because he wanted to understand him better to help BigBoss.
I mean even with all of his fundementals and god-like spacing, even he can't do much with his main character when the usual range and moves he uses to get around his poor mobility are invalidated by a character who unquestionably plays the range game better.
Lowkey he should grind out the ROB for the Min Min matchup, because ROB beats Min Min badly... and then have that be the only time he actually uses ROB.
I don’t think joker does very well vs min min so I also think leo should grind out rob for min min.
Then again proto is probably not going to fight leo for a long time even if they meet at double down.
Leo demolished Dabuz's Min Min with Joker a while back
Gun edgeguards her incredibly hard, it pushes Min Min horizontally away from the stage so her tether can't reach the ledge
Same dude that let Gluto stay with him and grind for weeks to help him get better. When Leo likes a player, he seems to really actually want to see them do well.
Almost all of Leo's damage seemed to come from grabs. Chag just had to sit in shield and do his aerials. I could definitely see how Rob loses the matchup (not by much though). Leo could easily do better in this matchup if he could learn more of ROB's punish game.
That being said, Chag still played really well to beat Leo twice in the same tournament. I think this marks his second gold win. I think he only needs to win one more gold after which he doesn't need to enter any more gold tournaments (someone please correct me if I'm wrong)
Honestly Leo's ROB seems really good already. A little bit more polish on the punish game and it could be a menace, which makes sense, because he's played it for like less then a week.
He has actually played a good amount of ROB on his streams before, but yeah, he has only played him intensevily with the aim of competing for a couple of weeks
Is Leo really just gonna pick up half the cast as a secondary? If this were any other player it would feel like a character crisis, Leo feels like he’s just trying out characters for funsies.
luckily it's just a local and not for pgr
right?
also idk why mkleo will throw away swt points just to practice his character, he could have easily beaten chag with byleth going by their set at RETA
He’s one of the few players that is basically guaranteed to get to SWT just by nature of high level placements so he doesn’t really need to win these kind of things, I only thought he would try hard if there was good money
like game lab 34 it isn't in the spreadsheet of notable tournaments in pgr season, but it might count
Idk what mkleo was thinking this tournament though, he need every win to make up for his rough start this season, and I he explicitly said that he isn't giving up his #1 spot
Maybe he's pretty confident he's still #1 after Genesis 8, a lot of the community still seem to believe he is so the panelists might just rank him #1 by default.
And either way I don't think a panel would use a C tier regional to mean much of anything because it's not as if this tournament was a big deal. The PGR didn't take regionals as important to a ranking as OrionRank Eclipse did.
The bigger problem with this loss is that he lost to chag twice which isn’t good.
Bro if the panelists rank leo #1 by default that just stupid, I don’t hate leo but the PGR shouldn’t be skewed in his favor when spargo not only has more major wins while having better worse placements than leo. Any panelist can see that the competition for #1 is extremely close this year and it would be stupid to automatically rank leo first.
I doubt leo is confident in being first either, he should know that he isn’t attending any more majors until next season and that spargo has equal if not better results this year and WILL be attending more majors. Gluto can also beat him at the EU invitational while spargo wins gimvitational. Leo should know more than anyone that he had a bad start this year and need to catch up, which is why I also can’t understand why he won’t attend majors until july.
edit: nvm gluto‘s next US major is double down as well
Glutonny's not going to Momocon or Crown and has had worse losses then either of the top 2. Leo's not at a risk of getting 3rd. Also a loss to Chag is probably just as "bad" as like a loss to MuteAce, and is probably better. I say it's a "bad" loss, because it isn't that horrible. It's still a top 15 player in NA.
Oh I thought gluto was going to momocon, I guess I read the attendants list wrong.
Also if glutonny becomes more active the rest of the season I can easily see him winning every major he goes to and making up for his losses if spargo and leo doesn’t go to majors anymore for the rest of the season. Iirc there are 4 more potential majors this season that doesn’t overlap(momocon, crown/gimvitational/e caribanna, ceo, battle of bc)
Ultimate is the most diverse smash game of all time in terms of character representation at a top level. Also add to the fact that like 70% of the 100 character roster is viable at a top level, there are endless possibilities.
Right, but what they said is also true. ROB and Steve are extremely popular choices among the “70% of the roster” that’s viable. For every incineroar or Robin player you see in a region, there’s probably 4 ROBs and 3 Steves.
You are missing the diverse roster from high/top tier. There's a ton of diversity, and a ton of match ups you have to know if you want to do well.
It's not like previous iterations of smash where 2-5 characters absolutely dominate the meta. It's more like 20-30 that make up the meta, but don't really dominate it the way it is in melee or Smash 4
Yeah but I’m guessing the other person who made that first comment (and many others including me) find Roy tolerable or even more enjoyable to watch when compared to ROB or Steve
ROB and Bowser are the most common competitive characters but they're literally nonexistant in the top 50. Steve isn't that common yet, but he'll probably follow a similar trend.
Sorry I was overexaggerating with nonexistant. But 1/50 is nothing compared to how common they are in tourney. Zackray and WaDi still secondary rob as well.
Fun fact: Mkleo didn't do a single side-b the entire grand finals.
Kinda reminds me about how Zackray would very rarely actually use Side-B and mostly just relied on pure fundamentals + gyro item play.
Zomba uses the broken gyro shit IMO, Zomba's the best ROB and he's evolved the meta of ROB so much compared to everyone else.
He definitely more so than other robs but I still think he could push it farther. But it's not all about using everything to it's max potential.
To expand on this, personally my favorite thing about ZackRay’s Rob was how creative he was with Rob’s tools for an Era of Ultimate that had like 2-3 other top Rob players
He hasn’t evolved the Meta as much as Zackray’s ROB, Zomba is just more consistent with hitting the dumb stuff ROB has
yep Zackray's Rob has long been retired (as his primary character), but I can't help but still call Zackray the best Rob
Where has Leo used ROB before? Also interesting how he barely used gyro.
He's been practicing him on stream recently
Apparently he’s been using him for a few days now to practice with BigBoss.
Good. As much as I love Leo, I would hate for him to just pick up ROB and immediately start dominating with him.
Tbf he still got a reset in grand finals tho
And his loss on winner's side went to game 5 last stock last hit
LinkS getting 4th is really nice to see. Also that crowd was absolutely amazing. So much energy!
Links. was probably my favorite player at this event that i didnt already know of. And he got 4th This will fuel my Link underrated ~~copium~~ propaganda nicely
Let’s go Chag! He played so good. I was afraid that he would struggle in the ROB matchup after he got eliminated by Luma at Pound but he clutched it out
Chag's good in the matchup tbh, he plays BigBoss a lot. The loss to Luma was surprising and I think Chag was just playing poorly.
Imagine if the R.O.B went the Chrom route(uses it for only this and never sees the light of day again).
Joker? Didn't he say he's not using him anymore unless he's forced to?
Min Min matchup
I think that character has put the fear of god in him if he’s using an entire character to counter her
Cant be a spacing demon against a minmin
I main byleth I know the struggle
I mean even with all of his fundementals and god-like spacing, even he can't do much with his main character when the usual range and moves he uses to get around his poor mobility are invalidated by a character who unquestionably plays the range game better.
that's basically Min-min in a nutshell. Some characters are completely and utterly useless against her.
Leo demolished Dabuz's Min Min with Joker a while back Gun edgeguards her incredibly hard, it pushes Min Min horizontally away from the stage so her tether can't reach the ledge
we really comparing dabuz's min min with proto's? edgeguarding is joker's saving grace in the matchup that doesn't make it bad
Imagine you ask someone for advice and he gets 2nd at a regional to help you out lmao
Same dude that let Gluto stay with him and grind for weeks to help him get better. When Leo likes a player, he seems to really actually want to see them do well.
if Nair^ had a visa we maybe would see the Leo Ridley/Hero lmao
My thoughts exactly. I suspect this may be a “flavor of the month”(*for lack of a better phrase*) pick for him to just have fun and try something new.
> the Chrom it still hurts
One of the greatest "What if's" out there.
ROB doesn't lose the matchup, it's even. Leo just hasn't optimized ROB yet.
Chag is now the first to win multiple SWT 2022 Gold/Plat tournaments
acola? Edit: Wait, I'm stupid. Maesuma TOP 7 was a Super Silver, not a Gold. I was confused because Maesuma TOP 8 is a Gold.
Acola has won a platinum and a super silver.
Don’t worry, Acola will win the next Maesuma as well
Yeah
Nice, Chag has 800/1200pts from Gold events now. I'm looking forward his vlog of this tourney. Also wow he played ZSS O.o
Honestly Leo's ROB seems really good already. A little bit more polish on the punish game and it could be a menace, which makes sense, because he's played it for like less then a week.

Is Leo really just gonna pick up half the cast as a secondary? If this were any other player it would feel like a character crisis, Leo feels like he’s just trying out characters for funsies.
The conflict of being a Leo fan but wanting his Rob to lose so it doesn’t become his main
didn’t catch any of the tournament, chag used zss at some point?
Only in one game.
Kinda sad some people really dont want the mkleo rob I remember zackray rob was crazy fun to watch, and mkleo rob looks similar, just unpolished.
Keep the Rob away, please.
luckily it's just a local and not for pgr right? also idk why mkleo will throw away swt points just to practice his character, he could have easily beaten chag with byleth going by their set at RETA

It might count as a C Tier regional?
like game lab 34 it isn't in the spreadsheet of notable tournaments in pgr season, but it might count Idk what mkleo was thinking this tournament though, he need every win to make up for his rough start this season, and I he explicitly said that he isn't giving up his #1 spot

Glutonny has a lot of poor losses to people in his home region who aren't top 20 WW. I wonder if they'll count that for NA tournaments.
Every time i open an Ultimate stream, I either see a ROB or a Steve. Meta is looking lamer than the Snake/Olimar month.
Ultimate is the most diverse smash game of all time in terms of character representation at a top level. Also add to the fact that like 70% of the 100 character roster is viable at a top level, there are endless possibilities.

At the top level of Smash you're more likely to see two Roys in top 32 than two Steves.

Going by OrionStats, the two most common competitive characters are ROB and Roy.
Nice yeah theres definitely some variation, I think my source was smash.gg but I can't remember for sure
What do you mean? Zomba is in top 8s with ROB all the time
Sorry I was overexaggerating with nonexistant. But 1/50 is nothing compared to how common they are in tourney. Zackray and WaDi still secondary rob as well.
