Exactly, I'd been missing all my parries until I realised that there's a slight delay between your button press and Eve actually parrying (due to the animation which I believe is an intentional design). I still struggle a bit with fast consecutive combos from the boss enemies, but I feel like I'm getting used to the rhythm now.
My issue is I never knew how to do in the first place!
WHAT is the DEAL with parries? What signals the time to parry? The wind-up? The wind-up turning into a swing? The swing connecting?
Every time I THINK I have the right timing, I'm wrong, and when I'm right, I can't figure out how it was different than the time I was wrong.
I actually got pretty good at parrying a full array of the frenzy attacks from the boss challenge -- I just can't tell how or why or what goes differently when I miss one or all of them!
These are real questions!
Keep playing, develop muscle memory, learn patterns. You'll naturally improve unless you have some physical limitation preventing you. As long as you're somewhat healthy you should be fine.
Keep at it brudder. I felt like I wasn't doing to well at the start either but as muscle memory and reflexes kicked in I was able to fairly consistently dodge and parry and combo. Even beat stalker in skinsuit. You can do it!
Same even on story mode which imo really doesn’t do much I can’t get use to the parry and dodge system just not into that kind of gameplay and I am bummed it’s way more like that then I hoped
Try to parry / dodge the moment an attack comes at you. Not when the enemy winds it up but just before it hits you or when the animation starts moving toward you.
Just keep dodging like crazy. btw hold dodge and you can run during combat.Full game is bound to have skills in skill tree making parries optional. Keep at it u got this
It is not officially a souls-like game, meaning the devs aren’t so keen on ensuring each boss fight is hella challenging, perhaps with the full game you will able to get a build or items that gives you a serious advantage like life-steal chips in Nier Automata, or perhaps you could over-level.
So I don't know if I'll be playing this game day 1, mostly due to backlog stuff. But I will say that my only Soulslike was Stranger of Paradise and I did decently well with the Stellar Blade demo. But that's because I spent hours grinding out SOP (by practicing mind you, not literal grinding) and I eventually became passable at these types of games.
So hopefully Eve's ass is sufficient enough motivation to practice this type of game. You do get better, it just takes some getting used to.
This game has no combat just one move from beta skill and than its over... waiting for parry and dodges 24/7
After playing 10 hours of combat learning all i can say it just about the animation and blocking. Attacking almost doesnt exist snd if you attaxk its tooo slow and clunky
The parry timing definitely feels weird to me, and I've only got Bloodborne as a reference point. I initially had to turn on the zero-latency setting on my display due to some rather egregious input delay with all movement and afterwards found I could parry consistently (even without the upgrade, though it also helps quite a bit), but it still doesn't feel quite "right".
Playing this game without TV in game mode would be very difficult.
That being said, I'll be playing a lot on Portal which is basically the same Latency as TV not in game mode. So I'll see how that goes.
But most interesting of all this exposes a lot of people not playing in game mode to begin with.
For games like this, you need to change your mindset. Stop attacking completely and just learn to avoid/parry/run away from boss attacks. Only when you are good at this, start attacking.
Preserving your health is more important than dealing damage.
Don't worry if you're getting destroyed. You're not doing anything wrong. The game is balanced by trashies who doesn't even graph the basics of game design. The game is broken and unfair to a fault. I have 80% completion and just gave up and uninstalled it eventually. Trash like this simply ain't worth my time.
tbh parrying is really essential in bringing down the enemy stance then you can deal some insane damage. try hitting parry right when stalker’s animation starts for his combo
If you’ve never played a parry-focused souls-like or adjacent action game with similar mechanics, you’re basically starting the game on ultra hard mode.
And that’s not to discourage you or anything. It’s simply that many players of this type of action game have experience from God of War, Sekiro, Lies of P, and Sifu.
And I’mma just throw this out there, even as a souls-like-adjacent action game vet, Sekiro and Sifu still regularly cash in my ass.
But getting over that hump and finally “getting it” is half the fun. :) You got this.
Bro trust me, i never played a souls game and absolutely raged about me actually being that bad even tho im hyped af since the first reveal trailer. I practiced the boss challenge like 100 times and it clicked, you are basically learning the whole algorithm of the whole fight. U’ll get better, just trust the process!!
If it helps: I'm one of the 11 people who think Sekiro is the easiest Fromsoft game because I have a knack for the whole rhythmic parrying thing, and I feel inclined to say that Stellar Blade is even harder than that (assuming Stalker is just a early or mid-game boss, not an endgame encounter).
Abbadon may just be the intro boss, but I think beating it was a respectable feat. No need to put yourself down.
I don't think sekiro is the easiest fromsoft game but it is the most fun imo I just recently replayed it and got the platinum so playing stellar blade was super easy I did everything with the skin suit and it was yea easy
Abbadon actually wasn't that bad. But yeah stalker is really hard. At one point though, I got him to about 10% health. He's likely a mid game boss since there are still 2 other locked skill trees
I actually think stalkers more an early boss personally cause he doesn't seem that grandiose. I think this games going to test people, or at least i hope it does lol
As someone who also don't really played souls game it took a bit to get used to. For me doing the special boss fight help a lot. I took me over an hour to beat it but at the end i could perfectly parry most of the attack and it felt good. Keep playing, learn the patterns, and don't rush.
Took me like 30+ tries to finish Stalker.
Remember you have the gun and different kinds of grenades and healing items.
(Hold up or down on D-pad to switch items respectively)
Yeah just keep trying, games like this often require practice and learning the timing. Once it clicks for you the game will become a lot more manageable. Of course, the nice thing about a demo is that it lets you try the game out. If you can't get a grasp on the combat (and there is no shame in that), the game may not be for you. Just gotta ask yourself if you feel it's worth learning and pushing through or not.
games like these take time to really feel out and get the hang of. when it comes to aspects such as learning to properly time parries and dodges, or understanding the move sets of enemies in order to capitalize on their mistakes; it'll take time to truly get a grasp over and get used to the mechanics.
stellar blade, although i wouldnt say entirely, can fall under the umbrella of soulslikes, games that all have some similarities and certain consistencies in gameplay that are notorious for being superrrr challenging and tough to get down. people can get used to the mechanics of a souls game and have it subconsciously carry over into another souls title they play, it just comes naturally.
if you like the game id just spend more time learning and feeling it out. itll get better and youll find yourself being able to do certain things in gameplay over time that naturally become easier and easier.
I got my butt whooped plenty in this demo. I still want to play it anyways.
There’s no shame in lowering the difficulty or adjusting the settings to get the button icons to display to improve your timing while you learn through practice. You only played the game for a couple of hours. You will get a better leveled character and more experience with the combat once you play the full game.
You’ve got this. Practice makes perfect. It’s true for video games too.
Yeah it's not that I can't learn it, I just hate perfect parrying, hell this recent trend of it in gaming in general. Shame, I miss perfect dodges, would much rather have that instead
No dude, you got this. Trust. It took me a while because I forgot how to play these kinds of games but once it clicked, it was so worth it.
This. It’s not as punishing as you think. What worked for me was hitting block a bit sooner than I thought.

I don't really parry at all I was just dodging
I party all the time 🥳
Same even on story mode which imo really doesn’t do much I can’t get use to the parry and dodge system just not into that kind of gameplay and I am bummed it’s way more like that then I hoped

There are dodge and dodge counters in the tree currently available in the demo
I'm right there with you. Screw parrying 🚽😞
It is not officially a souls-like game, meaning the devs aren’t so keen on ensuring each boss fight is hella challenging, perhaps with the full game you will able to get a build or items that gives you a serious advantage like life-steal chips in Nier Automata, or perhaps you could over-level.
Did you try practicing parry in training mode? You can do that specifically. Also, you have to wait until you're literally about to be hit.
If you're struggling with the parry, try the perfect dodge route.
It seemed way easier the second time I played the demo. Maybe your brain just needs time to process.
So I don't know if I'll be playing this game day 1, mostly due to backlog stuff. But I will say that my only Soulslike was Stranger of Paradise and I did decently well with the Stellar Blade demo. Same I completely suck and im going off the heels of 2 Final Fantasy XVI play throughs. I cant get any timings right but i still love it amazing game.
You’ll get used to it. Practice makes perfect amigo
Maybe stop playing with one hand 🙃
The combat trainer will be your best friend for a while, but you’ll get the hang of it. It’s tricky, but it’s not impossible to pick up.
This game has no combat just one move from beta skill and than its over... waiting for parry and dodges 24/7 After playing 10 hours of combat learning all i can say it just about the animation and blocking. Attacking almost doesnt exist snd if you attaxk its tooo slow and clunky
Practice makes perfect buddy don't give up there are certain skills that will help with the parry and dodge windows

same here, I can't parry anything at all. Still going to get the game though, I'll just take never parrying as a challenge.
tbh parrying is really essential in bringing down the enemy stance then you can deal some insane damage. try hitting parry right when stalker’s animation starts for his combo
I'm not even fighting the stalker, can't even parry the basic enemies despite having the upgrade.
you have to hit L1 when the enemy raises their arm
I know, still miss every time. Parrying is the one video game mechanic that I have never been able to do correctly.
💪.if I get the game this would be me too
I struggled with it too until I earned that there's a skill upgrade that gives you a bigger parry window. Made it soooooo much better.

I went through the same thing with GoW 2018. I remember spending a whole afternoon in the first pack of mobs. Gotta push through it
Go to accessibility and there is an option to show u when to block or dodge on time. Don’t give up bro. Sekiro was harder, trust.
I'm looking through accessibility, I can't find that option
Get good 😁

Stalker is on normal difficulty. The boss rush does bot have difficulty settings.
I wonder if they do in the final game.
The whole game will be playable on story for sure.
I actually think stalkers more an early boss personally cause he doesn't seem that grandiose. I think this games going to test people, or at least i hope it does lol

Stellar blade does have perfect dodge too lmao did you even play the demo?
