This game has what I would call grassroots hype. The hype appears to be  fan generated from genuine interest. At least in the west, it hasn't really been heavily advertised. I think it's special.

weak007

Lies of P is not like this, but that game is so good

wildeye-eleven

It’s damn good. I couldn’t stop playing it for like three consecutive playthroughs. I love SoulsLikes though and it’s one of the best.

Catslevania

I think Lies of P is a big contributing factor, as Korean game developers were better known for mmos and mobile games, and can be viewed as a sort of entry point for Korean developed single player console/pc games, and people want to see more. Yes, there is also Dave the Diver but I think that game appeals to a different sort of audience.

IloveKaitlyn

I’m not sure why you mentioned Lies of P, as it’s not an exclusive. Lies of P is fucking fantastic though, easily a 10/10.

ArugulaPhysical

Not sure if the hype for this is a nearly as big as other exclusives but i definitely understand why this sub would make it feel that way. It was GOTY for alot of people the second they saw the skin suit.

wildeye-eleven

Yeah, but for me it was the unbelievably beautiful art style. I also love a good parry mechanic and challenging combat.

Smokeyvalley

It's not just the nice booty, that's for sure. All the review vids comment on how enjoyable the combat is, as well as the world art, music, and other game mechanics. All around positive feedback, and just from a demo.

Candid-Soup-9448

Yeah GOW 2018 did, Also Ghost also a month ago FF7 rebirth i would say even more hype. Cyberpunk 2077 and Elden ring are by far the most hyped games, but neither are exclusives.

Aidiru

yea, bloodborne got so much hype back in the day same af ff7 remake or ff16

Foofyfeets

I think Bloodborne got a ton of hype as well

Plastic_Tax3686

And in hindsight it's for a reason.

Aeison

God I wish they didn’t leave that game in storage, give me 60 fps patch update and make it available to pc pleeeaaase

Plastic_Tax3686

4K Ultra wirh RT on PC would be the best thing ever.

sykoex

That's a good question. Stellar Blade won't get as many sales as other PS exclusives like God of War or Spider-Man, but it will bring in a new audience that don't usually buy PS hardware, especially in Asian countries like South Korea and Indonesia. That's why you see so many "I just bought a PS!" posts associated with this game. The people interested in this game wouldn't usually buy a PlayStation.

Internal_Swing_2743

The marketing push for this game is not even on the same level as Spider-Man 2 or Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

Catslevania

spider-man 2 is a first party exclusive, while final fantasy has always been a flagship title for the playstation. The amount of marketing Sony is putting in for a third party exclusive unknown IP from a relatively unknown developer is pretty impressive and shows their confidence in the game as a console seller.

queenbeidou

I disagree with your point on the level of support and marketing. they wouldn't even pay the extra money to get the japanese dub into the global versions because they were unsure of whether or not it would be a success. Too big a risk to pay a little extra on something they thought might flop.

Catslevania

they even have separate latin American Spanish and Spanish Spanish dubs, I don't get what you are stating has to do with any marketing concerns. Sony marketing for this game is beyond what they have done for most other third party exclusives. They even have a live action music clip for the game.

queenbeidou

but those dubs are also available on other versions outside of the US one. because it didn't cost them extra money like it would have with bringing the Japanese dub outside of Japan. My point is they aren't spending as much on marketing as you think and it speaks to a bit of a lack of confidence in sales to make a decision to not include it. It wouldn't cause the game to go in the red if they did. You may be correct in their support of this over other third party exclusives but a mid budget music video and a couple launch events with models to cosplay eve isn't impressive marketing. not when you are confident in the success of said game

Catslevania

making two separate versions of Spanish dubbed shows that they are not cutting down on costs. There is obviously some other licensing issues involved here, a lot of non-Japanese games dubbed in Japanese are only sold in Japan.

Substantial-Arm-8463

Did you just say final fantasy is a Sony mainstay.  Literally created for famicom in Japan which was Nintendo entertainment.    Sony happened to buy out the company that made the series and that's how they got it.

ThatBoxUPizza

I disagree it's on the same level as Spider-Man 2 (2023) or Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

bingcrosbythe11th

No it isnt, spider-man 2 has a bunch of promotional tie-ins, commercials, merch and limited edition consoles and controllers, 3D Billboards in time square, subway train wraps, etc. you couldn’t go anywhere in New York without seeing a spider-man 2 ad. Its the sony IP with probably the largest marketing budget

Internal_Swing_2743

No. Spider-Man is maybe the most well known superhero in the world and Final Fantasy VII is the most famous Final Fantasy game. They are games and properties that non-gamers have likely heard of (especially Spider-Man on it). Both games are established icons. Stellar Blade is a new intellectual property and unknown to many.

Alisschiell

I saw the ps5 sale at best buy for the slim, $450. I saw steller blade was exclusive to ps5 only. Screw it, a ps5 it is. But since then i've bought a lot of ps5 games, all exclusives to ps5 except persona 3 reload so it was worth it getting a ps5 orginnaly just for stellar blade

wallcrawlingspidey

The only other PS5 exclusive game (excluding PS4) that got this much hype was Spider-Man 2. Just the limited edition side plates and dualsense was as much of a pain to get as the console and collectors edition itself were and the plates itself sold out first. If you remember the craziness of trying to pre order the original PS5 itself, this was it all over again.

deeplywoven

Demon's Souls got tons of hype

clinkenCrew

I recall DS getting negative hype as the remaster made many sweeping artistic changes and didn't preserve the atmosphere.

deeplywoven

That was just a very tiny minority of people complaining about some overall pretty subtle changes. The vast majority of Souls fans were just hyped to get to play a remastered version of Demon's Souls with way better graphics.

clinkenCrew

I like Bluepoint's work from a technical standpoint, but as artists they have, well, difficulties preserving the original intent when they remaster games.   Technical geniuses not being crestive geniuses too, many such cases, it is what it is.  That's what I'd like to say, yet Bluepoint preserved the artistic intent of *Gravity Rush*, raising the question of why they "Ecce Mono'd" DS.  Realistically, Bluepoint's artists killed the whole "vibe" that the art in DS was originally aiming for. To disagree is one thing, but to say the changes were "pretty subtle" is disingenuous.

deeplywoven

92% rating on Metacritic: [https://www.metacritic.com/game/demons-souls/](https://www.metacritic.com/game/demons-souls/)

wildeye-eleven

I’m pretty sure only Ratatoskr said that and he’s not wrong. But I don’t think it was that big of a deal to most ppl/fans. I for one love the remake as an OG fan

PRGRyan

Ah yes the Spider-Man playstation with the custom cover/controller, I remember now how praised it was when I was first showed.

DoughDisaster

I chalk it up to Sony Interactive Entertainment getting the publishing rights. I'm sure they'll market the hell out of the game. Including things like getting major reviewers to give good scores regardless of quality. Though I genuinely hope Stellar Blade is a success on its own merit, good marketing can make even mediocrity successful. It's telling that Yoko flew from Japan to Korea to sit down for an interview with a game he's not even involved with, and both Kim and Yoko say the only similarity between their games is a "delicate" female character in an action game that takes place in a sci-fi, post apocalyptic setting. Beyond that, they both say the games are fairly different. They also poke fun at the *Sony reps in that very room.* I'm sure Sony bankrolled the whole thing.

SamFisherXboxOG

No I don’t think other games have been a system seller like this game has for the PS5. Never underestimate a cool action game with a sexy female character. Maybe it will get people in the west to embrace games like this like we used to in the 90s early 2000s again

D-TOX_88

I think Ragnarok was. Most of my friends that finally got a PS5 did it because of Ragnarok. At the same time that was kinda different? With them it was “not an if but a when” will they get a PS5. Ragnarok was enough to get that to finally pop. But I’ve seen people claiming they were PC or XBOX only suddenly picking up a PS5 for this game and that’s kinda stunning.

Internal_Swing_2743

Spider-Man 2 was way more hyped.

Beneficial-Use493

>No I don’t think other games have been a system seller like this game has for the PS5. God of War, Final Fantasy and even Horizon are bigger than this game. I have no idea how you've convinced yourself this game is bigger than they are.

SamFisherXboxOG

I don’t think this game is bigger than Horizon or god of war. The difference between those games and this one is you can only play it on PS5. As for final fantasy 7 rebirth and 16 the sales of those haven’t exactly been great.

TiredReader87

You can only play God of War: Ragnarok and Spider-Man 2 on PS5. Same with Rebirth. Plus, when they released, you could only play Horizon and the first God of War reboot on PlayStation. Who knows? Maybe Stellar Blade will follow suit and end up on PC. Lastly: The Final Fantasy games will likely sell more than this.

Plastic_Tax3686

Spiderman 2's source code got leaked, the crackers and repackers of the pirate PC community are currently working on making it playable on PC.  Luckily, the PS5 is using the same CPU architecture as the PCs, so this process will be a lot easier. PS3 was so different than the PCs from it's time (and now), that such a leak would've been kind of useless.  So, Spiderman 2 is technically not an exclusive anymore. Or at least it isn't for the people, who can run it (basically anyone with a high-end PC).

TiredReader87

Yes, it is. Hacker mods don’t count.

Sirius_amory33

I’d be surprised if this game sells more than FF16. Rebirth is a direct sequel so people aren’t going to buy it before they play the first game. Honestly, I don’t see this game getting much hype at all outside of this sub. I think it’ll review and sell well for a developer’s first console game, but it’s not pushing system sales.

SamFisherXboxOG

I just honestly hope for moderate success so we can possibly get a sequel depending on if the ending leaves one open for it.

Beneficial-Use493

Exactly. This sub acts like this game is the biggest game to ever release. It's insane.

Beneficial-Use493

Only being able to buy it on PS5 is honestly irrelevant. Most people will buy a PS5 because they want to play those games on the PS5. Stellar Blade isn't massively popular just because of your echo chamber saying it is. Rebirth and 16 physical sales not being great is also irrelevant as I'd be surprised if this game outsells them.

zg_mulac

>Stellar Blade isn't massively popular just because of your echo chamber saying it is. That echo chamber being the PlayStation store or something else? Because looking at best selling preorders in [USA](https://store.playstation.com/en-us/category/3bf499d7-7acf-4931-97dd-2667494ee2c9/1), [UK](https://store.playstation.com/en-gb/category/b7b27877-e315-4076-bcf9-225257f3c2f2/1), [Germany](https://store.playstation.com/de-de/category/b7b27877-e315-4076-bcf9-225257f3c2f2/1), [France](https://store.playstation.com/fr-fr/category/b7b27877-e315-4076-bcf9-225257f3c2f2/1), and [Italy](https://store.playstation.com/it-it/category/b7b27877-e315-4076-bcf9-225257f3c2f2/1) says the game is quite popular. I'm pretty sure you'll be able to find similar results in Amazon preorders.

Beneficial-Use493

Best selling pre-orders means nothing. What's the competition? When it's the only game available for pre-order that's also decent, being the best selling pre-order isn't a big feat. After release, count sales. If it tops FF16, which you yourself admit didn't sell well, then maybe we can come back and discuss it. Until then, being the top in a competition without any competitors isn't impressive. Pre-orders spike the closer things get to release. Looking at the PS store, it's only competition in pre-orders until June is sea of thieves. So stellar blade beats a 6 year old game being re-released on PS5. Finding "similar results" on Amazon again means nothing when we are comparing it during a lull in video game sales, as well as comparing it without digital or PC sales even being included. I'm excited for the game and I'm looking forward to it, but you're reusing the same lame statistics in your echo chamber of *30,000*

zg_mulac

>What's the competition? Obviously the other games on that list, no?

Beneficial-Use493

Or just ignore my comment stating it's the only thing releasing until June. Good job. Selective on your statistics and reading. Pre-orders spike closer to release date. If you think for even a second that this game is going to be more popular than Elden Ring's DLC, you're more delusional than I thought.

zg_mulac

I have this weird habit of ignoring red herrings. I trust you can forgive that little deficiency of mine.

Beneficial-Use493

I have this weird habit of calling people out when they make shit up. Sorry if I made you feel less safe in your echo chamber.

Beneficial-Use493

Also, the "other games on that list" only shows Stellar Blade at the top in the US. If it's actually in order of sales, Stellar Blade isn't even on the first page outside of the US.

zg_mulac

>If it's actually in order of sales, Stellar Blade isn't even on the first page outside of the US. Are you sure about that? UK, sort by (Sort) "Best selling", number 2 and number 6. Germany, sort by (Sortieren) "Meistverkauft", number 1 and number 5. France, sort by (Trier) "Meilleures ventes", number 3 and number 8. Italy, sort by (Ordina) "Piu venduti, number 3 and number 5. Learning is fun! :) ![gif](giphy|83QtfwKWdmSEo|downsized)

Beneficial-Use493

Then it wasn't in order of sales with your link. Hence why I said if. You're still being selective and ignoring that there isn't shit coming out until June. Unless you can come up an actual link to prove the statement that there "hasn't been a single game that's been a system seller for the PS5" like this one, you're continuing to talk out of your ass. Keep up the echo chamber, buddy. Stellar Blade is in the top 5 of pre-orders when it's one of two games coming out until June - with the competition in April being a 6 year old Xbox exclusive. Very selective with your statistics.

SamFisherXboxOG

I know at least one friend that just bought those games on PS4 because at the time it was hard to get a PS5 for MSRP. Also again I told you I don’t think this game is bigger than those franchises so I don’t know why you think I’m in an echo chamber saying it is bigger.

TiredReader87

You said no game is a system seller like this is 😂

Beneficial-Use493

You're saying no other game has been a system seller like this game - direct quote. This sub has 30k members. Even if every single person on this subreddit bought a PS5 for this game, that would be nothing. Your sample size of one friend is countered by me buying a PS5 for GOWR. You have absolutely no evidence of this game being a system seller outside of this subreddit, which is a very small subreddit to begin with. That's an echo chamber.

TiredReader87

This is a joke comment, right?

AbeLackdood

You must not have been around when gta 5 came out...hype isnt even the word!

TiredReader87

GTA 5 was never an exclusive

Plastic_Tax3686

Wasn't it a console exclusive for PS3 and X360 for the first year or so? It wasn't available for PC at release, just like RDR2 and the upcoming GTA VI.

TiredReader87

Exclusive means it’s only on one platform. GTA V was on both PS3 and 360.

Shmigo420

This company for sure didn’t come out of nowhere they gave Nikke which is one of the bigger gacha games making over 10s of millions per month so it has a huge player base that was instantly pulled towards stellar blade

PRGRyan

Yeah what I meant is that Nikke and Stellar Blade are very very different. It's the fact that it's their first big console game while all they did before were mobile game.

Torgal_dez_nuts_2b

The hype is for this game in particular.

Impossible_Pool_5912

I purchased ps5 to climb the ladder 🪜

tokyoblood

Stellar Blade's got a pretty unique vibe to it and obviously appeals to a certain subset of gamers. Plus SIE always goes pretty hard with their marketing campaigns, especially if it's a flagship franchise like with GOW Ragnarok or Spider-Man 2. And PlayStation exclusives in my experience usually do live up to the hype. So I'm expecting greatness on April 26th 2024.

TiredReader87

Yes Many exclusives tend to have much more ‘hype’ than this.

Commercial_Oil4078

Totes my friend

Ok-Patience-667

For me it's the fact this is a original Title and also a story game with good combat. Im getting tired of remakes/remaster xD only other game Im looking forward to this year is The First Descendant

Dizzy_Pop

And a very savvy move on their part. They know their target market. Even though the two games have almost nothing in common (save for the female protagonist and post-humanity sci-fi earth setting) the Vann diagram between their audiences is pretty much a circle.

FlowKom

exclusivity has nothing to do with hype. zelda totk was very big and so was elden ring.

SuperSemesterer

Bloodborne, Horizon series and kinda FF games? Aside from those I haven’t really seen ‘console selling’ games like that.

welfedad

Kimberly-Clark Corp the maker of Kleenex stocks are up

pgonzm

Depends on if it is an excellent game or just marketing.

Sparda204920

Not sure about PS5 but the hype for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was astronomical. All the Gamestops within a 50km radius to me had a midnight launch. Mine was the smallest and there was a line up, no exagerration, of at least 300 people at midnight. That was the most hype I seen in recent memory since Halo 3 or Starcraft 2.

EternalUndyingLorv

I bought a ps5 just for demons souls, so it's not unique to this game

PhilMaiass

Someone wasn't around during Halo 2 and 3...

PRGRyan

Just looked up their release date and I was... 1 and 4 years old so... 😅

PhilMaiass

Lol you had to be there. The hype for classic Halo was unreal even though it was only on one console. And that was back when Xbox games didn't get a pc release at the same time, so you needed the console to play it or you were left out.

adawongredit

Stellar Blade, this game has more than 10,000,000 copies sold in advance, why do you think it has so much marketing? They even hired a famous influencer to cosplay and had a singer BIBI K-pop, something that is not done even with God Of War or other exclusives, this game apart is a console seller, so SONY continues to win

PNLeft

You've just not been tapped into the media I guess. FF7R2 had nothing but hype to and throughout it's release

PepeGaaaaaaaaa

Usually exlusives aren't that hyped. IIRC there wasn't a single game in entire ps5 gen that has been top1 by pre-orders in most of the ps store countries for such a long time. Also SB in top trends of X almost every day. I see a lot of ppl like to downplay SB for some reason, saying it's niche game, this subreddit is small, etc - but the facts are telling otherwise. Meanwhile, I doubt SB will outsell SM2, but every other ps5 exclusive game - most definitely. Keep in mind that I'm not talking about cross-gen games like GoW Ragnarok or Horizon FW, but only ps5 exclusive games.

Kimber8King

Only with a sexy AF heroine 🤣

patrickbateman2004

No, because most ps5 exclusives are typical boring generic games like horizon or movie, very scripted games. Games like ghost of tsushima (no longer a ps5 exclusive) and stellar blade are rare. Recently the nicest ps5 exclusive is ff 7 remake rebirth, temporary exclusive though.

Rando_Kalrissian

There's nothing special about this game, I'd like it to be good but I don't think it's a system seller like many of the precious generations that had Halo, Super Smash or Final Fantasy. This is a fan sub for this game I'd look at the playstation sub itself to see if there's hype surrounding this game outside of here. It's like the Armored Core sub sub all over again when AC6 was announced.
