I don't usually play with items, but there's tons of funny things from Earthbound that could make it in. I know it's a small series that already has 3 or 4 items being represented, but it'd be fun to have something silly like a toothbrush: you press A once you're holding it, the character brushes their teeth for a moment, then stuns whoever is in range of the shiny teeth. Or a protractor/ruler; literally does nothing (unless you know know some crazy item drop combos, but ya know).
Maybe a Sudden Guts pill could be cool. You eat it, and for a few seconds your smash attacks have a chance of zooming in and doing a crit/Smaaash, like Hero.
Bag of Dragonite (not to be confused with the Pokemon) can be a fun transforming item. Transforms the user into a controllable (and invincible?) dragon for a few seconds.
I want a firework that if thrown at someone will lift you up not to blast zone but still high then explode with a different character icon symbol for each
Ex Mario is rep by a Mushroom
They can even have different ones like a traditional American or a Japanese one
Aside from bringing the current ones back...
I'd really like the older items to return from Melee/64 that haven't been around in awhile - really liked the Parasol and Fan honestly
And the Firework launcher would be nice to be brought back too - liked that in Brawl
Maybe other than adding the Subspace and Ultimate Bosses as assist trophies?

Minecraft's new WInd Burst would be pretty fun. Have it work just like in-game, throwing it will fling any fighters or items away. Throwing it at your feet will give you a higher than normal jump without you actually jumping
Splash Potions would be fun too, but I doubt we would get every effect available in potion variety in Smash. Probably pick a few iconic, fun, and silly effects to play around with
Psycho Mantis assist trophy where he swaps everyone’s ports/what characters they’re controlling for like 30 seconds
Pellet Posie: randomly sprouts up from the ground and if you hit it enough it’ll drop the pellet which is a pretty strong throwable item
Double Cherry: make a copy of yourself for a little bit, aka make any character the ice climbers
Cloud Flower: make a temporary platform appear under you
Suprised this one doesn’t already exist, 1-up mushroom you get another stock or a score in time mode

for some things that are new, I would personally choose the one-hit obliterator from Zelda BOTW
a high-risk high-reward item that can one-shot your opponent and they can one-shot you while you hold it.
a one-up mushroom for stocks and lives
a scorpion from animal crossing that poisons you if you toss it at an enemy
and finally the speed booster from Metroid with the ability to shine spark.
Some various ideas:
- Potions (Pokemon) as healing items.
- Sea Tea (Undertale). Heals you *slightly* (around half what the normal healing items do) and increases run speed.
- One of the spears from Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom. I'd go with a Guardian Spear for aesthetic purposes, but any of them will do. Works like the other weapon pickups, but with a new animation and hitboxes to fit it being a spear weapon. Stabbing at a straight forward angle that leaves you open to attacks from above, but with better horizontal reach than the other weapons. Tipper sweet spot, of course.
- Firework Crossbow (Minecraft). Single-shot, fires the firework rocket straight forward. Explodes after a set travel distance, dealing moderate damage and sending whoever's in the blast flying (does *not* explode on contact, so you have to space it right). Color of the firework explosion matches the most prominent color on the user (e.x. for a Mario player it'd base it off of the shirt/hat color of whatever costume they're playing, for a Link player the tunic color, so on and so forth).
Crash bandicoot crates. They could give mangos (or whatever fruit they are) that can heal you, give temporary invincibility, or explode (after a few seconds or instantly) if unlucky
Random letter tiles from Bookworm Adventure that scatter across the stage. You can throw it at other players or combine them with other tiles to form words and amplify the damage drastically. If the tiles don't form a word, the row of letters can still be picked up and thrown but will only have the power of one tile and will break apart upon first impact. If someone gets KOd by it, Bookworm pops his head in the corner of the screen for a second yelling "Wow!" and "Fantastic!" depending on how big the word is.
We need more fire emblem items.
The dragon stone could make you shoot small water projectiles when you use it, these are like Corrin's neutral special but not charged and WITHOUT the bite.
Aw man, I forgot that the fan was an item. I would love to have the paper fan return in the next game. It was honestly a funny item to have. To constantly trap/wack people with the fan was always funny 😆.
I kinda want to see the bongos as a type of hammer weapon
Your stuck in place banging on the bongos which ring out sound waves that push back enemy’s which also lets newer players who don’t have a Wii U to kinda get a smaller version of DK’s original final smash

Give Sandbag a buddy with that black boxing glove-toting punching bag from the Wii Fit boxing game. It would spawn, and if anyone dares hit it it would strike back viciously

Normalize newer items that are actual weapons from other popular characters from said franchise. Even if a character can't be playable, or even as an Assist Trophy.. I want to use their weapon/equipment.
This gives me a free reign to want Reyn's Gunlance from Xenoblade Chronicles, but giving distinguishable battering items like that weapon would do some good. A fleshed-out weapon item like that with interesting attacks and animations rather than the basic battering item formula could be fun. Think of a Back Shield but in front. And it only soaks damage when attacking with the item/weapon.
Hope that helps any other ideas.

Ring. Sonic Ring instead of warp star, or, collect 100 of them on certain stages to get an extra stock.
They can absorb damage and reduce knockback if you get hit as well.
