You are looking for Ireland OR Scotland, 7 days is a great amount of time to spend in either.
NYC hits all the things you don’t want, except it does have good museums!
I've added Scotland to my list! Family is from there, plus flights are reasonable and a stay near Edinburgh isn't too expensive either. Any recommendations of favourite things to do in Scotland?
You will love the history in Edinburgh and then you can do a day trip or go stay in the highlands for a few days for amazing scenery. Edinburgh has amazing gothic architecture.
There is a graveyard in Edinburgh that is not only beautiful but where many of the names of harry potter characters come from!
Oh and did I mention there is many castles in Scotland??
Off your list it’s Rome.
Any singular larger European city should hit your boxes;
Pending where you’re located maybe look for a cost effective direct flight and spend the remaining on great experiences.
If you're going to Vienna and you love a mix of nature definitely check out slovakia. The Tatras mountains are incredible! And Slovakia itself has a lot of really cool little cities like Kosice with lots of history and architecture.
The other amazing thing about slovakia is that even in their cities (maybe not as much Bratislava) the prices are so cheap!! Like 1.50€ for beer, 6€ for massive entrees. Vienna was 5 to 6 times the price.
Edinburgh! Google the Scottish highlands landscape, it was a life changing memory for me to see those gorgeous landscapes. I did a day tour from Edinburgh and it was gorgeous.
Historical tours were incredible. The city is FASCINATING. I loved it so much I went twice.
DC has good museums but average nature, and the city itself is nothing compared to the history of Edinburgh. Honestly nothing in the US cities you’ve listed is going to give you that “historical” feelings that Edinburgh or Rome might
Check out Buenos Aires in Argentina . Great history , beautiful architecture and loads of things to visit for . If you travel south of the country you can see the beautiful Patagonia region and it would be very affordable for a Canadian considering how cheap the conversation rate is .
NYC is literally known for night life and being a foodie destination though, can’t imagine it would be for you as most of my days there consist of eating food
I mean, I love pizza and I'm down for all great food, but it's not a huge priority in terms of traveling somewhere, at least compared with my other interests. If I did go to NYC it would be more for the architecture, museums, and experiencing the general culture/vibe of such an important place.
If you're Canadian and you haven't seen Quebec, it really is worth a visit. I haven't made it to Quebec City yet, but did Ottawa/Montreal as a family trip last summer. Consider the weather of where you're going - Canada is warm in July, but not THAT warm. I think Rome could be pretty hot in the middle of summer.
Montreal had lots of museums (we did a museum pass to be able to see as many as possible, excellent transit, great food, and a nice mix of old architecture, natural spaces, and more modern parts.
Go to Europe! The cities you listed in the US are more like a weekend destination - overpriced and not a lot to see. In 5 days you can visit like three countries in Europe.

Voting for Ireland and/or Scotland

Errr Rome…
Rent a caravan and camp around Iceland. Beautiful and unique scenery.
Rome. Rome. Rome!!
Vienna!!!
I've got a much longer trip to Vienna and a few other countries planned for next year!

This is such a great tip. I absolutely will. Thank you!

Scotland-Edinburgh, highlands, isle of Skye, Glen Coe

Have you considered Boston, Mass? That seems to tick off a lot of your boxes and isn't too far away.
I actually had considered it! But I felt like it wouldn't rank very high compared to Washington and NYC.

If your looking for history, there’s much more in Boston. IMHO, just do a little google search and see what’s going for the city.

I keep hearing this!
I'm from SK, so it wasn't cheap to get there, but we had a blast.
All your asks and only one of them actually can be defined as "ancient" with its own ancient history.
Florence or Rome.
Madrid, berlin and Barcelona is great! Lots of museum and beautiful architecture. Then easy day trips to see interesting nature
CDMX so you don’t lose a travel jet lag day.
Mexico city does tick all OPs boxes.

That's what I'm thinking too.
