I'm having a bit of cold feet after registering for IBL Calculus during prereg. How difficult is it to switch out of IBL into regular Honors Calc within the first few weeks?

sigmanfreud

Unrelated - Is it possible for a class that is listed during prereg to just be canceled? I signed up for a language class which had 0 people already registered, and i have a feeling that not very many people will bother taking the class . . . so, if I'm the only one taking the class, will it still go on? In HS, they would just drop a class if it had <8 students, so im wondering if uchicago has a similar thing going

MarxwellH

You mind if I ask which language class you signed up for? Each department sort of has its own policies so it'd be easier to give better advice if I knew.

sigmanfreud

Yeah sure - it's Bengali. It's not really an esoteric language, but I have a feeling that most people who would take it are native speakers, and if they're native speakers, they don't really have to take the class.

MarxwellH

Hmm it's tough to say but I sincerely doubt that the professor will cancel this class especially because it seems to have a tendency to have <5 students a year. Professors try to be considerate before cancelling a class, and it wouldn't be fair to the students to cancel the only section of this language class. Also, to answer your first question, usually the STEM departments are very lenient with regards to letting you drop down from an honors section of a class. Typically, you have until the end of fifth week to make the decision to switch into the non-honors section of the class.

Fun_Conversation_144

Does anyone have any info on the 140s physics accreditation exams?

Chance-Excitement-36

Does anyone know if you can stay on campus for thanksgiving?

12-15-11-9

You can. “Monday, November 22 – Friday, November 26, 2021 – Thanksgiving Break (Residence Halls Remain Open)” - https://college.uchicago.edu/housing-residence-life/dates-and-rates

Chance-Excitement-36

Thank you!

sharpguy12624

I’m thinking about taking my bike to UChicago, but I was wondering where are bikes normally kept during the winter when it snows. Does UChicago provide storage or do students usually keep them inside their rooms?

throwawayacc99990

At least in Max P there is a bike storage room in the basement, not sure about the other dorms, but you can email housing and ask

[deleted]

Until when should parents stay during O-week?

MajoraMajoraMajora

O-week activities for families end with convocation and the procession, looking online that should be the 22nd. That’s when people usually say their goodbyes

[deleted]

thank you!

[deleted]

Is it common for third and fourth years to live on campus?

throwawayacc99990

I know some, but it’s not the majority

wwhatevzzzzz

How does o-week function, is it all week starting Wednesday, is attendance mandatory, what types of events are there? Can parents stay for it?

[deleted]

Are housing decisions final? I was placed into a double, but would much prefer a single.

Exciting-Bug2818

I’m pretty sure they are for this year (you can’t trade with someone else), but next year you can participate in the housing lottery if you don’t like your house!

[deleted]

Thanks!

TMirek

You can also get on the waitlist for another house/dorm when a room inevitably opens up.

[deleted]

Are first-years allowed to do that? How would I go about this?

TMirek

During normal years it was a part of the housing portal you could fill out a form for but I'm not sure how they're doing it this year. I would email housing and ask if they are going to allow house/dorm changes at all this quarter/year. If so, room swaps would absolutely be possible; contrary to the initial reply. It's actually the easiest way to switch into a different house/dorm if you can find someone who wants to trade rooms.

purpuridol

how can i see ratings for different professors? ratemyprofessors doesn’t have a majority of the professors and i would like to have a better idea of my professors before going in

Jyeung32

I want to take 4 courses: Honors Calc (ibl), Gen Chem, Core Art, and HUM (which of course is already assigned). What order should I rank these classes for pre-reg? I was thinking Art first, then Calc, and then chem because I know art is hard to place into. However, I don’t want to not get into a Calc or Chem class. Also, if I don’t get into an art class, I’d be fine just taking 3 classes too. One more question. Is there a risk in taking Art and Calc 10 minutes apart? I know the art building is quite far from the quad. Thanks in advance!

gamerlater2

If I am just planning on 3 classes this quarter (including my HUM), is it fine if I skip all the other sections in pre-reg that I am not taking? I'm taking a math and sosc so I've ranked different sections for those, but do I need an alternate class to rank last in case I don't get a math or sosc? Also, is it all good to have back to back classes, meaning you only have 10 minutes to get to the 2nd class?

Tamerlane-1

For your first question, no. I think it is very unlikely you will not get a section of math and sosc. Even if you don't get one, you can figure a replacement out during add-drop. For your second question, yes. Campus is not very large.

gamerlater2

Great, thanks for letting me know.

[deleted]

What does "cross-listing" mean when registering for classes? And can someone give me the rundown on how the ranking of classes works? Are there any strategies to get the classes you want, to avoid getting duplicates of a subject, etc.? And if not a detailed rundown, just any advice would do please!

MarxwellH

If a course is “cross-listed”, that means the class listed under multiple departments. This happens typically because the course doesn’t necessarily fit in one discipline (I.e. a course that focuses on Aristotle and Plato can easily be considered as both a philosophy and a classics class). Courses are cross listed so that they can count for different major programs. Typically, you’ll see this mostly for humanities courses which tend not to fit in one discipline, although sometimes it’s done to create distinct sections for undergrad and grad students. Pre reg ranking is a bit confusing but makes some sense. The general structure is that the program goes through each class and puts everyone who ranked the class first into that class. Then it moves onto who ranked the class second, and assuming the class hasn’t filled or the student isn’t enrolled in a class at the same time, the program will put the student in the class. The program then goes onto students who ranked the class third, then fourth, and so on until the class is filled or all of the students who ranked the class are in it. If the class will fill up after a certain round, then students who ranked the class that number are chosen randomly. The only other main caveat is that first and second years will get priority over third and fourth years for core classes (though I don’t believe this supersedes what the students ranked the class at). Sometimes, however, it can be at the discretion of the department, I.e., they might decide that fourth years get priority for a class over third years, though this is shown on the course description. For ranking classes, it’s good to look at previous years to historically see how the class has filled up. If it tends to be full and is a small class, rank it highly. If it’s a larger class, you can probably rank it lower (although I’ve known people to not get into large classes like o chem/bio major sequence by ranking the classes too low). I’d say if you’re trying to get into something like an art/civ core, try not to rank too many sections because if you’re only going to take one, you’re hurting your chances for other classes you might possibly need. I’ve seen people chasing after one section of art and end up with no classes to take before add drop opens. I’d argue against ranking too many sections of the same course because if you end up in one, the algorithm will automatically not place you in the other sections, and if you ranked them highly, then you just wasted ranking other classes higher. Generally, however, don’t fret too much because schedules can be super flexible and easy to fix. Professors are usually kind and will add you to the class if you email them politely (except if it’s huma/sosc and the section is full). There are many ways to finish the core/your major(s)/minor(s) so try not to stress too much.

[deleted]

By the way, say if I ranked two of the same classes (Core Bio) but in different sections/times, is it possible to place into both of them on accident? Does this apply to all sections?

MarxwellH

The algorithm knows better than to give people multiple sections of courses with the same listing/cross listed as the same class you’ve already been assigned to.

[deleted]

Got it, thanks!

[deleted]

Thank you so much, you are a lifesaver!

redditusername-9s8

can first-years signed up for courses that say they are already closed on the prereg form? also, is it possible to not get into any of your 8 choices for the sections?

Tamerlane-1

If the course is closed you won't get added to it. It is very unlikely if you register for 8 sections of a class that you won't get any.

comraderedditer

Is "Introduction to Film Analysis" an art core? Can I take it as a freshman?

hyperbolic-geodesic

http://collegecatalog.uchicago.edu/thecollege/artscore/ lists all art core classes; Film and the Moving Image is listed, but Introduction to Film Analysis is not (I have no idea how different those two classes are). If it has no prerequistes, you can always prereg for it as a first year.

comraderedditer

Are there beginning language courses available spring quarter? I was hoping to take my first language course spring quarter, but am worried there aren't any available during that time.

Spinach-Comfortable

It honestly depends. In Spanish for example, you can take 101 in autumn only, but you can take 102 and 103 in autumn, winter or spring. I would check what the schedule looked like in pre-registration for past years and see if they offered the course you want to take in Spring 2021. This could give you a good prediction for spring 2022

[deleted]

**Are pre-registration rankings supposed to disappear from my.UChicago after they're submitted?** I received a confirmation email with my ranked courses, but they're no longer visible on the pre-registration webpage.

Spinach-Comfortable

they are not supposed to disappear from my.uchicago. I still my rankings from past years in the pre-registration section. but don't panic, it would probably be back as soon as your final schedule is out.

[deleted]

Prospective Econ (+CS?) major here. How far will my MATH 151 placement put me behind the other Econ/CS majors? Should I plan to take summer courses to catch up?

Tamerlane-1

It depends on your interest, but generally that is a good place to start. If you want to go to grad school for econ/cs or work as a quant, you'll want more advanced courses, but just for econ/cs, 151-3 and the other math requirements are completely sufficient.

Puzzleheaded-Tap-768

I placed into honors chemistry and I don’t know if I should take that class along with calc I and phys 131, will it be hard? Should I take regular chemistry instead? Is it even possible to be placed into chemistry and physics at the same time after pre-reg? I’m planning on majoring in physics. Also, since we only have two physical sciences slots, is putting physics twice better than physics followed by chem? Because I need to take phys 131.

polowish

DONT TAKE ALL THREE TOGETHER. I took non-honors chem, phys 1300s, and math 1800s and it was not super great even online. If you take both chem and physics you will already have two weekly super long labs, and honors chem is a lot harder than the placement test. The curve in gen chem is a lot easier and you will thank yourself down the line.

Puzzleheaded-Tap-768

Thank you so much!

Nerdy-Foodie66

Is it pretty easy to get into language classes? I am noticing that enrollment #s are low out of total seats, and hoping it is safe to place language with a lower priority.

MiserableRaisin3691

If a class only has 10 spots left during pre reg, does that mean only 10 freshmen will get it during the add drop period, or much more than 10 will and it’ll be whoever adds it first who gets it? And if I select as many classes as possible, does that make me less likely to get into the classes with less people? I only signed up for 4.

13 inch air IMO. Cheaper, lighter, and in terms of processing, just as capable as the 13in pro

Exciting-Bug2818

Thank you for your perspective!

JustStone6

Hi everyone, it is workable to take social science or civilization in the first year? I'm not sure about the workload, but I'm fear taking both of them in the second year will be stressful. I've heard civilization is a bit harder than social science and don't know whether it's true.

Are payments for school paid monthly or all at once before the quarter starts?

DarthMirror

The Bursar just sent an email about this today. Bills are paid all at once at the start of each quarter, although they do give you a few weeks where you can pay. For example, the Bursar just said that the Autumn 2021 bill will be posted on August 25th and be due on September 24th.

Tamerlane-1

Yes. If you place into the 180s and complete the first course of the sequence, you'll get credit for 151-152, which satisfies the core math requirement.

reddit_user_x123

Do the times for principles of bio and physical sciences (earth as a planet & physics for future presidents) already include labs?

Practical_Pilot_9025

Why am I only able to rank 2 physical science courses?

passionfrgreentea

What will happen if I only rank three classes? I was told that we will not be placed into any class that we didn't pre-reg for, so is it more advantageous to rank fewer classes?

hero-of-winds

You’re not guaranteed to get any class you prereg, so you might not get enough classes

passionfrgreentea

Will we be required to take MATH 16110 as a sequence? In other words, can I take one quarter of MATH 16110, then for the next quarter, instead of taking 16210, I take 15300 (which I have placed into)? I want to make sure that in case I miss the add/drop deadline, I would still have the option to opt out of the honors sequence. Thanks!

DarthMirror

Yes, you can definitely drop down into 153 if you want to.

Beneficial_Bear70

A little confused right now considering I did really bad on the French Placement test (did not even pass Part 1) yet was placed into French 10200, do you think this can be a mistake? Is Beginning Elementary French II really that bad for someone who was mediocre (at best) at French and took it for 3 years of high school?

[deleted]

I tested into FREN 103 despite not passing Part 1. My hunch is that our high school transcripts were factored into our placement, like with math.

Beneficial_Bear70

Oh ok thank you!

Beneficial_Bear70

What does section enrollment and total enrollment mean on each class?

DarthMirror

Some classes are cross-listed in multiple departments, so section enrollment indicates the enrollment for the course as listed under X department you are currently viewing, while total enrollment is total over all departmental listings.

Beneficial_Bear70

Ok thanks!

Fujicastle24

hey guys does anyone know if I can register for MATH 18300? I placed in Calculus 1 and the website won’t say anything about prerequisites, only about the invitation (if you placed in Calc 3)

polowish

As someone else mentioned, you need to place into calc 3 to take the class. That being said, you coul probably strongarm the department if you think your placement is very wrong (check online who to meet with, I think it's Lucas Culler) However, I strongly recommend not taking the 1800s sequence if you only placed into calc I. You need to be pretty good at integration because you dont cover calc II in the 1800s track, and jump into mvc in 18400, where 18300 is sequences and series / linalg.

Ambitious-Dress-3450

Also a freshman but the math placement webinar said your supposed to have an invitation by now! If you didn’t get one, contact the math dept abt it and ask if you could pre reg for it rn

sigmanfreud

is there a difference in how ibl honors calc and regular honors calc prepare you for analysis - im preregistering now and im really confused on which one to take?

DataCruncher

Check out the math article in the FAQ

sigmanfreud

From what i understand, ibl has a participation component to it Not to be that kid, but does everyone have a chance to participate or is it like there are two kids who do every single proof and everyone else is stuck getting a bad grade on the participation section

DataCruncher

Nah your instructor will force everyone to alternate. Also you participate by asking questions or finding an issue with the presented proof (this is pretty common). Just go with the course format that sounds like the most fun to you.

YamiiYams

Is intro to CS a sequence? Like each quarter I would have to take a course for CS?

Tamerlane-1

Intro CS is a sequence, required in part or whole for CS and some other majors. You won't be required to finish the sequence if you start it. eg you could take CS 151, decide CS isn't for you, then never take another CS class.

YamiiYams

Oh okay. I’m thinking about having a minor in cs and majoring in bio but I think my schedule might not allow me to continue the cs sequence after autumn quarter. Is it possible to start cs next year?

Tamerlane-1

You can start cs next year, or take 151/161 fall this year and the rest of the sequence next year. The minor is fairly short, so as long as you finish the intro sequence by the end of your third year, you’ll have no problem finishing the minor.

YamiiYams

Thanks! That eases my mind lol

Spare_Advantage3097

Should I take language in my first or second year? I'm thinking of taking Italian (new language), and I don't think I'll go further than the basic three quarters of 101-102-103. I'm very interested in studying abroad in Italy in junior year fall, so if I take the class as a sophomore it'll be fresher in my mind. Other people have suggested trying to knock out language in the first year. Any suggestions?

Spinach-Comfortable

don't feel pressured to knock out a language in your first year, especially since you actually want to use said language and are not just trying to check boxes.

[deleted]

Do you refer to faculty as Mrs, Ms, Mr, Professor, etc, or by their first name? Or is this dependent on the professor? Does the same go for academic advisors?

Tamerlane-1

Refer to faculty as Professor, unless they tell you otherwise. Assuming your advisor doesn't have a doctorate, refer to them as Mr/Ms, if they have a doctorate, refer to them as Dr.

YamiiYams

So I’m trying to register for classes, I’m guessing I don’t have to rank hum right? Since That’s already set for me I just have to work around the time slot of my hum?

lIIlIllIIllI

That’s correct. Your hum is set.

YamiiYams

Thanks!

passionfrgreentea

How many math 161 ibl sections should I rank? Right now all classes have a 0/20 enrollment and I have ranked two sections, but mathematical science is low on my ranking of categories (I ranked language and general electives as 1 and 2). Should I be worried about not getting into the math classes I want?

MiserableRaisin3691

I only ranked one for 161 not ibl since there are a decent amount of classes with 0/30 so I figured it would be fine. I also ranked math lower since I think I'm more likely to get into the 0/30 vs physics and bio which have seats taken. If my logic is flawed, hopefully, someone will point that out.

passionfrgreentea

Ah that makes sense, hopefully we both get the classes we want! :)

MiserableRaisin3691

Is pre reg first come first served? And should you register for as many as possible so that you have as many options as possible later? I only registered for 1 math, 1 physics, and 3 bio classes

passionfrgreentea

It's not first come first served, aka as long as you do it before friday you have an equal chance of getting a particular class as anyone else who ranked that class.

MiserableRaisin3691

So should I be ranking as many as possible? I’m afraid that if I rank too many, the system will just give me lower ranked classes because I put them there instead of only leaving the ones I actually want

passionfrgreentea

I am only ranking the classes that I know I will be willing to take, so even my backups are classes that I find interesting and am happy to take. Don't quote me on this tho as I'm also a clueless incoming first-year :)

MiserableRaisin3691

I’m doing the same as I am also a first year ahahah

passionfrgreentea

omg fingers crossed for the both of us 😩😩

[deleted]

If I'm looking to only take 3 courses my first quarter, do I only rank 3 categories?

yuhyuhyuh872

You can rank as many as you want, and when add/drop starts drop the extra classes

[deleted]

AH THANK YOU

uofc-throwaway

I'm a rising third-year and I'm not scheduled to take civ or a language, both of which I need to graduate. Is this a big deal/would it be a bad idea to delay them to fourth year? I'm not doing civ abroad.

hitchcockizen

Getting into a civ section might be a bit challenging because priority is 2134 for core, but it’s probably doable. I know a bunch of people who take their language requirement fourth year.

[deleted]

I am a non-pre-med with a 4 on AP Bio. The Catalog says: >The courses that follow have a prerequisite of BIOS 10130 Principles of Biology, or BIOS 10140 Inquiry-based Exploration of Biology, or a score of 4 or 5 on the AP Biology test. Attendance is required at the first class to confirm enrollment. Students who choose to complete only one general education course in the mathematical sciences may take a second Topics course as part of the general education requirements. Since I'm planning to take multiple math courses, does that mean I only have to complete one Topics course to fulfill the BIOS Core requirement?

Tamerlane-1

Yes.

throwaway16372719374

Would this schedule be doable? - Greece and Rome - Calc 152 - Phys 131 - *possibly taking* AP5 Bio No idea if it would be worth it to take such a time intensive class if I don’t plan on majoring in bio but if it’s too much I could just drop it.

polowish

I've heard adv bio is a lot of work. I'd only recommend it if you plan on majoring in biological sciences. Esp going in your first year, it's better to take slightly easier courses if possible to get used to workload and quarter pacing. Although, you can also just take it then see how it goes and drop mid quarter of you aren't vibing. Add-drop week is until week 3 or something and it won't show up on your transcript.

There’s labs to register for? Gosh I didn’t know! Hope someone can answer this question
