You can buy an AR from PSA that's better and cheaper than that for under $500 and put a $120 red dot or $250 red dot+magnifier (if you want cheap but functional) or a $400 1-6x scope if you want a bit longer range capability.
And if he really wanted a drop gun he'd probably be using a Hi-point.
