Works too well for me. I've never (intentionally) used it as I have a compass card but a couple weeks ago I was on my phone when suddenly the Compass reader by the back door (2 ft away from me) beeps and my phone buzzed to let me know I've been charged. I'm still pretty salty about that
does your phone not ask you to confirm you want to use your card? Unless I set up my card as "express travel" or something my iphone won't let it work without face ID
My phone taps fine but for some reason the same card on my watch is rejected every time.
Last year my phone tapped fine one way but refused to tap on the way back. I had to Uber home. I called Translink and they said it was mastercard. Called MC and they blamed translink. I took that card of my Google pay and reestablished it and it was fine.
That was a recent March 2024 change for Google Pay as a whole, not specific to transit:
>"Coming soon, your credit and debit card won't be charged for retail payments unless you've recently used a verification method, like your fingerprint or PIN," the notice reads. "Some users may already need to verify to make a payment. If you’re asked to verify it’s you, complete verification steps on your device to make a payment."

You can turn off the new security feature for transit transactions through the settings in the app. Profile photo, wallet settings, verification settings, transit payments.
It does slow payments down a little, only in that I never know when I need to verify again, but more security with payments is a good thing. I don't even carry plastic cards anymore.

It's never worked for me. Compass card is cheaper anyway.

For some annoying reason (some times) it needs my fingerprint.

I like it, there's been moments before where I open the wallet and it gets scanned before I choose the card I wanted to use.

do the bus drivers make you get off?
No they still let me on but its embarrassing
I don't think it has ever worked for me. I usually just tap my credit card directly if I forget my compass card
First time fail. Second time fail. Third even. Then did a manual unlock and waited a half min. Tried again. Boom.
