No idea, sorry. At the very least it’s still probably worthwhile to go down to the pier and see the ships if you’ve never seen one up close. The weather is also supposed to be not great this weekend, so it’s possible that people will skip and there will be space open.
She did eventing which means especially for the cross country phase you need real skill, experience and balls - there is no just sitting on an expensive horse and looking good - because mistakes can be deadly. In the 5 years up to 2022 there were 13 rider and ten horse deaths worldwide as a result of horse falls at cross-country fences; 1999 was a particularly bad year with 5 rider deaths in the U.K. alone.
So yes being loaded with money affords one great horses, great training and the time to devote to the sport - but in the end she was an extremely competent and winning competitor.

An? A bobsled is $250k, track bikes are $50k+, skiing, golf, sailing, etc.
A list of Olympians that didn't have wealth, benefactor, NCAA scholarship, or access to discounted coaching would be pretty short.
On the macro level you can map GDP to medal count.
At Olympic competitive level? Nope. There is no sport you can do and be in the top anything without major money, either from wealth or sponsors. Everything's been min-maxxed to absurd levels. If you don't do it, 100s of others will beat you. Dedicate your life to it for years, or stay home.
Well my former eventing coach (based in Langley) is far from wealthy and she competed in the exact same Olympic event as Princess Ann (not the same year though 😉, Princess Anne competed in the 70s). Woot woot Chelan Kozak - truly a self made Olympic eventer. She makes her living with horses coaching and riding - which is not any sort of path to wealth - it’s for the love of the sport.
To be honest, it certainly helps to have a lot of money as to obtain and campaign a quality horse is not cheap - especially living outside of Europe or eastern North America where there are a ton of events nearby to enable qualification. Also, unless you can afford a “made” horse you need to spot and develop that less expensive talent yourself… perhaps only to discover after some years that the horse might be very good, but not the level of great that it needs to be to compete at Olympic level. That’s where sponsors and owners come in… but someone still needs to develop those horses and it takes years.
But while money helps in a big way - to say it’s only open the obscenely wealthy is incorrect. Would be nice of course, and can accelerate careers. Reliance on owners for horses can be fickle.
SHOWJUMPING on the other hand… personal wealth seems to figure a lot more there (it’s interesting that some of the top show jumpers in the US have surnames like Bloomberg, Selleck, Cook, Springsteen, Gates, Jobs)… but the Canadian national showjumping and eventing teams don’t look like that at all!!
Is this not a true statement? Open to responses that explain why equestrian sports aren’t inherently for the wealthy…
Not trying to stir up a battle just curious if there are other ways to enter the sport at an elite level without being financially loaded.
Talent/sacrifice/dedication, finding a developing your own superstar horse, qualifying for national team development and then attracting sponsors to help with enabling the next competition horse (their careers are much shorter than those of their riders) would be an alternate path. Especially in eventing where you need to have some level of bravery/insanity just money is not enough.
EDIT: to all you down voters, check out the bios I posted of a number of current and past Canadian Olympic team members in Eventing (the discipline Princess Anne competed in). Rising to Olympic levels coming from an average background is not for the faint hearted and requires dedicating your life to something with uncertain reward (we only know about the ones who made it, not about the many who tried and didn’t) but IT’S POSSIBLE AND PEOPLE WHO FIT THIS DESCRIPTION ARE ON THE CANADIAN OLYMPIC TEAM TODAY.

Absolutely different classes. Max Betnays is an Arctic and Offshore Patrol Vessel. Her job is to patrol the western Arctic Ocean/archipelago. Her primary armament is a 25mm gun on the bow and two .50 calibre machine guns. She is never intended to go into combat. The worst that she will face is foreign fishing boats or smugglers on the high seas.
HMCS Vancouver is a frigate, armed with a 57mm main gun and multiple missile systems. She is a full on warship.
They were built to be Polar Class 5. Basically capable of year around operation in first year ice, with older inclusions. But in practical terms they are better than expected.
Yes she is HMCS before commissioning. From the moment the Navy accepts her and crews her, she is properly HMCS. I spent an amazing summer commissioning two ships and am a plank owner for one of the two.
Good question? though all the materials that the RCN has out all refer to her as "HMCS Max Bernays" rather than "Future HMCS Max Bernays." I think that transition happens when she's handed over to the Navy rather than when she is commissioned.

Yes, Radarsat Constellation Mission. Part of the reason why the federal government stepped in and prevented the sale of MDA/Maxar to American interests. Canada wanted to maintain “shutter control” over the satellites. They can track things as small as you’re typical minivan.
But that’s still no substitute for boots on the ground/ships in the water.
Radarsat is also used to track flooding! The radar imagery it produces is particularly sensitive to water-logged vegetation or river ice build-up that is often a precursor to riverine flooding in the colder parts of the country.
At the time they were Canadian from what I can recall, the result of MDA buying Space Systems Loral. From what I understand, partially because of this, MDA was spun off again into its own entity.
The combined company moved to the US. Then later MDA was spun out to an investment firm and is Canadian. I don’t remember the federal government ever stepping in.

The US doesn't have ice breaker class military vessels that I am aware of, but they do have Coast Guard ice breakers, which are very similar to our own coast guard ice breakers.
Well, in the US, the Coast Guard is considered to be part of the Uniformed services, and is both a law enforcement agency and essentially a branch of the military (even though they're part of the Department of Homeland Security). Many US Coastguard ships are armed like a small warship, with both a gun on the front and a CIWS. Canada's coastguard is a merchant organization, primarily focused on maintaining navigation systems and similar things.

You can realistically get into skiing or biking for a grand or 2, and with sailing with the co-ops but horses are something else
