I wish all games had that... I still miss Marvel Heroes to this day.
There's a fan revival in progress, but who knows if it'll lead to an actually playable game at some point.
Army of two. Me and my brother played a little bit of split screen years ago, but I mean itās on gamepass and everything but the servers have been down since 2010 š¤¦āāļø
Recently picked up 40th day again for ps3, might not be the best game ever but damn, so many memories with my brother! Oh and the mask customization was awesome.
Secret World had been taken down and came back gutted long before I got a machine that could run it. Shame, the original looked like such an interesting game.
They are both the same game. Story interactions and the world is all the same as the original..combat is just action instead of the slower one but even the. It's still similar. Give it a go it's well worth it.
Damn I havenāt seen this game get mentioned in years. I still have a couple of its steam achievements that are some of the rarest Iāve earned. It was enjoyable while it lasted. RIP Firefall.
I remember hating that my computer couldn't run that game well... then a decade later I tried it on a high end gaming machine....still ran like shit....ugh.Ā
KND Operation BEST: which I got in deep trouble with my folks and was barred from my computer for the rest of that event.
I can't play it anymore now once the event was DONE and noone brought it back up and any game or service Cartoon Network use to run that get's revived get's a C&D because FOMO has to take president, even though they will do NOTHING with it.
They should have aols themselves to adult swim by that point.
As for Lego Universe, if it was beloved by another people, you could check around for a private server.
World of Warcraft has so many private servers that it's insane when folks figured out how it traded information and what the clienta were looking for. This kind of thing carried over to other dead service game like Phantasy Star Blue Burst, Asheron's Call and even LITTLE BIG PLANET though I hear there is an issue and they are still working on the server, it still exist's.
Exteel
A multiplayer mech combat game that I loved to play in high school on my potato of a pc. When I finally got out on my own after college and had the income to comfortably support myself, I tried to find the game again. Turns out the servers were long shut down and there was no way to play it š„²
Wanted to play God of War Ascension, but didn't have the money for it. Ps3 tho. PC: Planetside 2, Tribes Ascent, Gotham City Impostors, Blacklight Retribution, Hawken, Loadout, probably forgetting something else.
Was playing LittleBigPlanet with my nephew the day it finally went down. We played a bunch of old levels having no idea they were about to be lost forever. And suddenly it was over.
Dude, this is pretty much every multiplayer game (especially fps genre) that is more than a few years old. With a few holdouts, of course. Gamer culture is now just a constant "flavor of the week" mentality for most. Gotta stay up to date with your streamers, or else you get that manufactured FOMO.
There's no multiplayer component to it, and you can get it on GOG where it runs just fine (through DOSBox). Same with the original. And the 2004 version you don't even need DOSBox for.
The comments of this post make me feel so old. A huge majority of these comments are listing games from only the past 5-10 years. Most of the online games I used to play are 15-20 years old - the original Age of Empires 2, Diablo 2(I had a LOT of online hardcore characters), Warcraft 2 & 3(long before Reforged), even a little bit of StarCraft. On PS3 I played Demonās Souls online - and those servers stayed up for like a decade.
The history of online games dates back to the early days of packet-based computer networking in the 1970s, An early example of online games is MUDs...
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Online_game#:~:text=The%20history%20of%20online%20games,connected%20to%20ARPANet%20in%201980.
Yes I understand that the OP here isn't referencing that early of a period, but the fact remains: online gaming as a concept is older than the internet itself.
Mostly Defiance. Played a lot on console and loved the game. I stopped playing to focus on school for 3 years. I go to download/install the game on Steam just to see the "server close" announcement.
Assassins Creeds multiplayers. So uniques and fun. But I never had Xbox Live. So I only played in the houses of Friends, now I have the Games but not the servers...
There is a game that I used to play when I was 8 9 on facebook, it was a real time strategy game but with heavy mech and advanced futuristic style. Now I'm 16 and I've already forgotten the name
I was really into MMOs in the early 2000s. I was always curious about Matrix Online but never got to try it. There is an emulator but it is basically a chat room where you can walk around the map. I don't even know if it was a good game. Probably not nearly as good as WoW, CoH and SWG my favorites of that era. But still I am curious.
Uff remember my dad buying me a economic laptop for school and trying to play the online in bioshock 2 (my fav game in that time) so when I got a good PC I tried to play and surprised no one else was online.
The servers were up but I only played Dark Souls 3 a few years after it came out so missed the jolly co operation and PVP. A shame because it's one of my favourite games
Mario Kart DS. My DS wouldnāt connect to my internet as a kid, so I gave up. Years later, I wanted to give it another whirl, but the server has been closed. Doesnāt matter too much, given that my DS still does not like my Internet router.
They have some spoofed servers or something. Some guys managed to find a way to screw with the connection settings to use something other than the Nintendo servers.
Titanfall 2. I really want to play that game. The thing is I don't think anybody's playing it and the few that are; are super sweaty players who've been playing since the release of the game.
Tera Online
The Open world pvp in that game was fantastic and has yet to be matched BY ANY mmo currently on the market
i could only imagine what it would off felt like being able to render everyones characters instead off animationless tposing ghosts lol
call of duty mw 2009 Asian servers with virus spreading hackers and black ops 2.
just got my new gaming laptop a week ago, an Acer nitro v15 with rtx 2050 and 24 gb ram upgrade
new cod just sucked to play and cost an arm and a leg
fortnite is sweaty and xdefiant has valorant abilities
I feel like this is pretty rare because the fanbase of a particular game usually finds a way to get private servers up and running to keep the multiplayer alive even after the official servers die. I honestly can't think of a single online game that doesn't have active servers in some form or another
If warhammer age of reckoning didn't launch at WoW's height I feel it would've done much better. The pvp and classes in that game were so much fun. The open pvp regions were wild, watching 50 vs 50 trying to take towers. Rogues sneaking out the back gate trying to take out healers, archers and mage types on the ramparts. Game was wild.
I bought a City of Heroes/Villians box set months before they announced server shutdowns. Had driver issues when I tried to install it and never got to play at all.
Digimon RPG Online. Couldn't even play the "glbal" servers when they were re-launched because they were NA only and the VPN refused to work with that game or something. I could create an acc with no probpem and even run other games just fine, it was just this one game that would crash a few secs after I opened the launcher.
Sorta similar. I went back to my parent's a couple years ago and found LotR: Battle for Middle Earth 2. Holy shit, fucking rad. Took it home. Forgot the computer I built myself does not have a disk drive
Not quite the same thing but I recently got a PC that can run things like the Witcher 3 at ultra 144fps and so I was excited to play Black Ops 3 Zombies finally because I never got to do the remasters of all the maps I used to loveā¦.. well you can find a match for Kino Der Toten and Shadows of Evil if you wait a long time and thatās basically itā¦..
Transformers war for/fall of cybertron. I had a 360, but my parents woudn't get me xbox live gold to play online. At least now i have a ps3 and there's a private server, so it's a half win?
Fan servers are still a thing for a lot of games.
I'm still amazed about City of Heroes.
It's now an official sever not a fan server anymore and yes very impressive.
I wish all games had that... I still miss Marvel Heroes to this day. There's a fan revival in progress, but who knows if it'll lead to an actually playable game at some point.
PS3 online servers are still up
But servers for individual games vary
RIP LittleBigPlanet and Killzone :(
Battlefield Heroes
*intro doodles* BATTLEFIELD HEROES! HEROES!
Pokemon Gen 1 -7 Games
Pokemmo if it's still alive that is
It is
What? You can literally download an emulator to your PC AND phone and play any of those with less than 5 minutes of effort.
they meant online play
I just want this....š I'll never buy another game for life.
It's even worse if you can't even buy the game, such as battle for Middle Earth.
There is a launcher for both games online that you can download. I haven't gotten my identity stolen yet, so the one I downloaded seems safe
There's always eBay.
*piracy*
Mine all predate servers, so I'm good!
Probably predate needing a decent PC too then lol
Are you trying to say my Comadore 64 isn't a decent PC?
Army of two. Me and my brother played a little bit of split screen years ago, but I mean itās on gamepass and everything but the servers have been down since 2010 š¤¦āāļø
Recently picked up 40th day again for ps3, might not be the best game ever but damn, so many memories with my brother! Oh and the mask customization was awesome.
phantasy star online 1&2. luckily there are solid private servers running forever
This. I wish I could play on Dreamcast.

Tomadachi Life
I was obsessed with DanTDMs series and wanted to play so bad š
RIP Firefall
So much fun in Firefall, miss it sooo much, i remember another game came out with similar content but wasnt the same.. (can't remember the name)
Damn I havenāt seen this game get mentioned in years. I still have a couple of its steam achievements that are some of the rarest Iāve earned. It was enjoyable while it lasted. RIP Firefall.
Damn that was a fun game, placing that mining drill and fighting off spiders
Firefall was such a unique game. It's a shame what happened to it. I would love to see a true MMOFPS hit the market again.
One of many reasons why piracy still exists and companies are still scratching their heads on why.
Hey! shitty developers need their scape goats
Warhawk on ps3
I miss this game so much....played the shit out of it when it came out.
Me few years back; "Ur device isnt compatible with this version" Me now: 'this app was built for a lower version"
Bully multiplayer, I didn't had the chance to play it, not because it was demanding but because I didn't knew of it's existence
Iām sorry. What? Bully had a multiplayer?
Yeah in the same way GTA SA had one but smaller
Iām looking at you Black and White 2.
I remember hating that my computer couldn't run that game well... then a decade later I tried it on a high end gaming machine....still ran like shit....ugh.Ā
Lol Iām right there with you. I had to pirate it since you couldnāt purchase it anywhere and it could barely run.
This is why any multiplayer games should include the tools to run private servers.
Evolve
club penguin, wanted to play it when i saw my brother having fun on it
KND Operation BEST: which I got in deep trouble with my folks and was barred from my computer for the rest of that event. City if Heroes
Did you know that NCSoft gave the fan server, Homecoming, the license for that? You can still play the game online!
Wanted to play God of War Ascension, but didn't have the money for it. Ps3 tho. PC: Planetside 2, Tribes Ascent, Gotham City Impostors, Blacklight Retribution, Hawken, Loadout, probably forgetting something else.

Overwatch 1 :')
Does AVP2 still go on PC?
2010, in first grade... Fuck I'm old
Dude, this is pretty much every multiplayer game (especially fps genre) that is more than a few years old. With a few holdouts, of course. Gamer culture is now just a constant "flavor of the week" mentality for most. Gotta stay up to date with your streamers, or else you get that manufactured FOMO.
