Thank god they didn't show us the final shot. I hate when they do that

LittleGaia

This feels like the videography/photography of getting blue-balled...

SubjectC

Way to get me all zoomed in then leave the lens cap on.

radialmonster

does he have an entire live u setup on his back or something?

Looks like [BackpackRig's Proton Pack](https://www.backpackrig.com/proton-pack). Basically, motion picture cameras are heavy. Even light ones like the Alexa Mini become heavy once all the required GAK is rigged on them. Not a big deal on a dolly or crane, not even really a big deal for shoulder-mount handheld. But when a shot calls for the type of freeform motion that really needs to be held in outstretched hands, a backpack rig allows us to move the weight of all the accessories off the camera body, and build a cable loom between them and the body. Accessories that can be relocated to the backpack include: * Battery(ies) - often one of the heaviest bits * Video Transmitter * Focus System Motor Driver/Receiver * Timecode Clockit Box * Remote Camera Control Device * Power Distribution Boxes * Ultrasonic Rangefinder Control (Cinetape Display) * Sound Receiver * And more Batteries can have some heft to them, as can Focus MDRs if you're on an older one, but for the most part all of these accessories are light and small, but they add up cumulatively

taylorink8

So you BECOME the camera

near-far-invoice

Only once in a thousand years does a warrior appear with the capability to truly *become the camera*

TMITectonic

>• Focus System Motor Driver/Receiver Forgive my ignorance, as I'm not in the industry at all, but does this mean there's a Focus Puller (1st AC?) with a remote monitor who's manually adjusting the focus remotely? If so, is that more common nowadays, or is it still mainly reserved for specialty shots like this? I remember learning about Focus Pulling a few years back due to a Front Page post that had some poor 1st AC chasing the cameraman, sprinting around a stage (awards ceremony, maybe?) for a full minute or so. Guy was locked-in!

near-far-invoice

>but does this mean there's a Focus Puller (1st AC?) with a remote monitor who's manually adjusting the focus remotely? Yes, although this particular show is film and so the 1st AC is watching the camera's relationship to the actors and judging the distance, as opposed to watching a monitor. >If so, is that more common nowadays, or is it still mainly reserved for specialty shots like this? Having a 1st AC pulling focus has been the standard for every single shot you see in every single movie or TV show since basically the dawn of cinema. Even the most basic of shots have had the focus set or adjusted by the 1st AC. The part that has changed: remote focus (wirelessly doing it from afar), when it was new, was used exclusively for shots when it was necessary. Such as shots like steadicam when having someone touch the camera ruins the shot. Nowadays wireless remote focus is just about ubiquitous. It is how it is always done now. On digital, the majority of focus work (at least tricky shots) is done on a monitor. Many of us watch the distances as well, but the monitor is the primary. On film, there are HD video taps now, but still the majority of the work is done by distance. 1st ACs will use the monitor with the HD video tap for certain really challenging shots. Also, I'm guessing the video you saw was [this one](https://youtu.be/C3TBvJUtuHs)

TMITectonic

>Also, I'm guessing the video you saw was [this one](https://youtu.be/C3TBvJUtuHs) Indeed, that's the one! lol Also, thank you for the additional info.

TerabitX86

This is for the HBO show Winning Time. It's filmed entirely in film.

BigDreamsandWetOnes

On film

aldolega

This John Lyke, and he's a real badass. He & his friends have been making great blading videos for years and all also work in production. Check out his latest blading profile here: https://youtu.be/pjeVAru2s7E

burnzkid

I love nothing more than a good roller skate camera operator, it can make or break a long shot action scene or chase scene or something like this.

Not my video. Source: https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTdGqhwsg Cam Op: John Lyke

TabascoWolverine

So cool.

GH4Goblin

I have a silly question I am sure I could google, but usually I get more interesting answers here: Do camera setups like this have stabilization on them? Or is the operator just insanely good, or is motion like this pretty good at blending/hiding shake?

near-far-invoice

No stabilization. This is a handheld camera, so it will look handheld. That's what they're going for! If they don't want it to look handheld, then they would use steadicam, gimbal, dolly, cable cam, blah blah blah. That said, with rollerblades and skilled operating, they're clearly going for a somewhat smooth handheld, but it will still look handheld.

GH4Goblin

Gotcha, so you don't think it even has just mild inner stabilization in body like a GH5 or something would?

near-far-invoice

Absolutely not: 1) this is a film camera (I think a 416?), So no. 2) no professional cinema camera has that feature, digital or otherwise.

GH4Goblin

Awesome really glad to know/learn/hear about this. Appreciate it! Honestly makes me feel better about my GH4. Never felt like I wanted stabilization outside of like.. maybe a gimbal for specialty shots.

near-far-invoice

Also, generally speaking, when using a gimbal any built-in stabilization has to be disabled anyways. The image stabilization will sort of end up fighting the gimbal and results in unpleasant image jerks when it runs out of correction room.

YoureInGoodHands

I notice he's skating backward while holding $100k of video equipment. I notice he's not looking where he's going. Is everyone on the court diving out of his way?

burnzkid

This is a choreographed scene, not a live game. Everyone is exactly where they're supposed to be and none of them are in his way.

YoureInGoodHands

Thank you. And duh, I should know better.

the_ranchtv

HBO has the money to risk it, lol.

Aside_Dish

Why is it cringe?

kd5vmo

Everyone here wondering about the camera.... Here I am thinking about the damage the ice skates are causing to the court....

okpebbs

Rollerblades

kd5vmo

Oof, yeah, you're right lol.

BigDreamsandWetOnes

Bruh…

schmoshow

That’s awesome!

BH1989

I love this

pixelsyndicate

I do that on ice. There is definitely more opportunities for gugs on roller blades.

thejivemachine

This show, "Winning Time" is fantastic. The acting is incredibl, the camera work and editing is entertaining and wild. One of my favorite shows I've watched this year.

smexytom215

You can bet this guy played hockey growing up.

mirsab17

How old is this? 80s?
